RE: cygserver 1.20: How to start this daemon before PostgreSQL's postmaster in a script?
Maybe the best way to check cygserver's complete startup (i.e. the IPC functionality) would be to use the ipcs command. The following outputs are for cygserver service up and down status (I'm not sure the fact that I'm on XP makes any difference, though): $ ipcs -q Message Queues: T ID KEYMODE OWNERGROUP [Here I manually stop the cygserver service] $ ipcs -q Bad system call Tha same kind of output comes for -s (semaphors) and -t (shared memory). Ralf, [...] If you're asking whether you can replace the Explorer desktop, taskbar, and window manager with Cygwin tools/programs, I'm not sure if it's possible This is one of the goals of the KDE/cygwin project. [...] I think you and Igor gave a too complicated answer. The short one is: yes, one can replace the shell=Explorer.exe from [boot] in system.ini with cygwin application. In fact, I tested it with my favourite shortcut line that launches rxvt. So, after the login completed, there was only my background, no desktop, no bars but only the rxvt window. The problems with this approach are: 1. the application used as shell must also be able to logoff/shutdown/restart/standby/restart in MS-Dos mode; or a batch file that starts after the (in my case) rxvt window, the corresponding window dialog. 2. of course that the usual windows task management do work, by starting the apropriate programs from the new shell 3. there are not many graphical cygwin applications in general, so it is very possible that there are none to be usable as shells 4. (I couldn't try here, I have hot X installed at job but) a startx like bat line, or a xinit line (for an appropriate xinit configuration) in the above shell= place, could start a X gui, capable to start windows programs also. No. 1. problem remains, though. SLao -- COMPUTERBILD 15/03: Premium-e-mail-Dienste im Test -- 1. GMX TopMail - Platz 1 und Testsieger! 2. GMX ProMail - Platz 2 und Preis-Qualitätssieger! 3. gtk2 on cygwin ( --with-gdktarget=win32, only )
(After my -- much too enthusiastic ? -- intrusion over a thread in this mail list, and an appropriate meeting of the meannes (SIC!), here it is.) Actually, the patches for having this done are present around since some time, some at http://cygnome.sourceforge.net/ some others at http://web.sfc.keio.ac.jp/~s01397ms/cygwin/ Well, applying this patches isn't enough, there's a little trick (as in http://cygnome2.sourceforge.net/test-patches/README ): after patching and configuring the sources, one must cp /usr/autotool/devel/bin/libtool . in the build directory. As those from sourceforge emphasize the cygwin/xfree86, I didn't pay too much attention there. But glib2, atk pango compile OTB, although pango is somehow relatable with X. No problem. Gtk2+ doesn't really need a patch to compile. For the win32 backend, you only have to specify the --with-gdktarget=win32 --with-x=no to configure. But there is a problem when compiling the .dll.a for the cyggtk[...].dll. I dunno why other dll builds don't face, it but I needed to add a -Wl,--export-all-symbols flag to the linking flags (I did it by adding to the libgtk_win32_2_0_la_LIBADD). Without it, the resulting dll.a contained no symbols. And you can enjoy the gtk-demo.exe, after. Well, when it comes to applications the things become some harder, as those already win32 targeted, are _WIN32 targeterd, in fact. So to have them compile one must either to balance __CYGWIN__ with _WIN32 defines (i.e. #ifdef _WIN32 - #if defined(_WIN32) !defined(__CYGWIN__) ) or contact the authors or other developers. I have cygwin (DLL version: 1.3.11, DLL epoch: 19, Snapshot date: 20020504-18:26:37) installed on a FAT32 (win98) partition, originally installed under win98. Also added several lines to /etc/profile to check for runnig environment (win98 or XP) and to use appropriate /etc/passwd an /etc/group files. The problem: I couldn't set 'ntea' to work properly in this configuration. 'ntsec' is ok, on XP's NTFS, but no chown co. on FAT32. Of course, you could add the option --with-xml=no and eliminate this problem :) ... or build a shared core version of apache+php (not shared modules), or a static version. Re: GTK on CYGWIN
[...] CYGWIN is really a great thing. I want to use GTK natively on Windows, not with XFree or another XServer. What is the easiest way to install GTK with CYGWI`N [...] BTW, this is XFree86 stuff and should be discussed on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list. Gerrit -- =^..^= [...] Am I missing something? Or Gerrit ...?! :)) Actually the single hint for using GTK+ with native Windose, is the tml's (Tor Lillqvist) port -- which is not a cygwin but a mingw one. But as tcl/tk package has the same property and is still usable, GTK+ could become a similar case. Except the situation someone does a cygwin port (also like tcl/tk's case :) SLao -- GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/
Re: GTK on CYGWIN
Gerrit, [...] 1. A native port of GTK has nothing to do with Cywgin. ^^^ If you ned help here ask Tor and use mingw or orther lists. [...] It has. To mention just the posix paths? :) [...] 2. If you use GTK linked against cygwin1.dll it is XFree86 stuff. Then use the Cygwin-XFree list. [...] It is not. As the XEmacs and Mummit Khan's tcl/tk port, the main difference between the X and the _cygwin_ ports would be the native (gdi) functions used to draw the widgets. No X functions. No X. rebase (a) solution (?)[was: Problems starting apache, DLL base address conflicts?]
Stipe, [...] Any hope to shorten this last method ?! Yep, do we (package contributors) have to rebase packages before tarballing them, or what's the standard way to do it? [...] No, I didn't mean that. What I was thinking, was if rebase couldn't actually be included in cygwin distro, and to eventually add its step as a option to autobuild (conf/make) stuff. Re: Failed: Installing Postgresql under Cygwin on win98se
[...] $ ls -l /bin/postgres gives me this: ?rw-r--r--0 0unknown 2706432 Jan 1 1970 /bin/postgres where unknown is my win-username (ok might be confusing..) 1970 looks funny, but this ?rw-r--r-- makes me nervous... and chmod doesn´t work, so I have no idea how to change that!? [...] Just curious: do you actually login to your winbox? ... and how? Because (as stated in a later thread message from you) having only the unknown user in /etc/passwd is quite unusual. (Or you might login, but do you have tcp/ip installed?) Anyway, the ? file type is, as Jason stated, your root cause. (I have very) Few ideeas: 1. scandisk, diskdoctor or whatever (for convenience) 2. try with a different cygwin version (I use 1.3.6 and it's ok) 3. virus 4. a. ln -s /bin/bash.exe /bin/sh.exe (the list has some threads about this -- wether to use the hard windows link, which is cp /bin/bash.exe /bin/sh.exe or the above; anyway, I use ln -s .. and it's ok). b. make sure that your starting sequence where you open your cygwin shell (dosbox or rxvt) launches as a login one (i.e. --login option for bash or -ls option for rxvt) I would bet for one the first 3 issues here to solve the problem, but you can give to the 4th a try, just in case :) SLao -- GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/
Re: Failed: Installing Postgresql under Cygwin on win98se
Thanks for replying! Is /usr/bin in your current path? yes, everything´s fine Did you select the sh-utils/grep/sed/et al. packages when you installed cygwin? also yes. this in fact was my first idea, but sed itself seems to work... ...it looks like it needs postgres.exe in the same directory as the script or in /usr/bin. Regards, Shelby Cain [...] There are still two issues to check, then: 1. Are your cygwin mounts binary 2. What shell is installed as /bin/sh For 1., unmount /path mount -b /resource /path for every /path that lists under mount command and it's textmode mounted would solve the problem. For 2., check the list about using another /bin/sh than /bin/ash.exe; the best bet is to replace /bin/sh.exe with /bin/bash.exe (in the same conditions setup did - i.e. with respect to either symlink or copy method). Re: rxvt custom fonts
Alec, Cygwin uses Windows' fonts The only exception I know of is the TeX [] A question about something I've been digging a long time Are there any means to make those Terminal bitmapped Windows fonts to work with rxvt? If I passed Fixedsys or System to -fn option, it's ok, they show up For Terminal I tried Terminal, Term, and their mappings in Fonts tab from MS-Dos Prompt propreties (ie 10 x 18), but no results TIA, SLao -- GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet http://wwwgmxnet -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwincom/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwincom/bugshtml Documentation: http://cygwincom/docshtml FAQ: http://cygwincom/faq/
