Hi,
rxvt is a terminal program that can be used instead of the windows
command shell. It does not require an X server.

This release fixes some multibyte character issues and is built with
--enable-languages, thanks to a series of patches from Cole Lin.
It also re-enables xpm support, thanks to a heads-up from Frank-Michael.

To update your installation, click on the Install Cygwin now link on

Note that we do not allow downloads from sources.redhat.com (aka
cygwin.com) due to bandwidth limitations. This means that you will need

to find a mirror which has this update.

In the US, ftp://mirrors.rcn.net/mirrors/sources.redhat.com/cygwin/
is a reliable high bandwidth connection.

In Germany,
ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/pc/gnuwin32/cygwin/mirrors/cygnus/ is
usually pretty good.

In the UK,
http://programming.ccp14.ac.uk/ftp-mirror/programming/cygwin/pub/cygwin/

is usually up-to-date within 48 hours.

If one of the above doesn't have the latest version of this package then

you can either wait for the site to be updated or find another mirror.

If you want to make a point or ask a question, the Cygwin mailing list
is the appropriate place.

Greetings Cygwin Support,
I have successfully installed Cygwin under W2K Server.
1) inetd is running correctly
2) ftp is running correctly
3) apache is running correctly
4) telnet is running correctly except having 2 problems:
a) When telneting from a dos window, I enter user id and then press
the enter key,
it wont let me enter the password, it automatically does another
lf cr to the next line
before I get a chance to enter the password. Also it gives me an
error message stating that the
id/password is wrong!
b) When telneting from a server running terminal software package
called Tera Term, it
will allow to log in successfully, but after I am logged in and
type a command, the command
wont echo back to me until I press the return key!
PLEASE NOTE THAT I DONT HAVE THESE PROBLEMS WHEN I AM USING A CYGWIN

Hi, All, :)

Thank You! to Sergei and Matthijs who graciously gave suggestions and
commiseration about my problem with 'less' not determining the terminal
size correctly. Through no fault of my own, the problem seems to have
ameliorated itself: running 'less' in a new rxvt instance no longer
exhibits the quirky behavior of trying to scroll only 24 lines in a
25-line terminal.

(Note that rxvt is still opening a window that is one row greater than
what I ask for. I ask for '-geometry 80x24' and get 80x25, but that's
a niggle.)

However, 'less' now seems to be struggling to interpret keystrokes.
Specifically backspace: when editing a search pattern, instead of
erasing the previous character, 'less' inserts ^?. Ctrl-backspace
seems to perform the function of backspace, as does Ctrl-h. Once
again, this behavior didn't crop up until my recent update from 1.3.12
or so to 1.3.15 on Friday.

Here is what I believe to be the relevant info about my system. If this
isn't clear or complete enough, please let me know!

Installation info:
cygwin: 1.3.15-2
rxvt: 2.7.2-14
bash: 2.05b-7
less: 374-1
termcap: 20020930-1
terminfo: 5.2-3
Win2K SP2

rxvt invocation:
C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe /c start C:\cygwin\bin\rxvt.exe -tn rxvt -fg
grey -bg black -fn Fixedsys -sr -sl 5000 -e /bin/bash --login -i

Relevant environment variables:

TERM=xterm
LESS=iFMSX# 8
CYGWIN=tty nontsec

Any ideas on how I can investigate this problem further?

Subject: 'less' can't determine terminal size?

 Hi, All, :)

I updated my installation recently, and I'm now suffering from an odd
problem with less. I hope that somebody can point me in a direction
for my own investigations. I had been running 1.3.12, I believe -
after the refresh on Friday my cygwin1.dll is at 1.3.15. bash is
2.05b.0(7). I run bash via rxvt-2.7.2-14. Here's my rxvt run
 command:

 C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe /c start C:\cygwin\bin\rxvt.exe -tn rxvt
-fg grey -bg black -fn Fixedsys -sr -sl 5000 -e /bin/bash --login -i

I believe these environment variables are relevant:

 TERM=rxvt
 LESS=iFMSX# 8
 CYGWIN=tty nontsec

My problem is this: 'less' no longer properly updates the screen when
I scroll through a file. Paging forward is fine, but when trying to
scroll by line ('j' or 'e'), 'less' tells me that it is moving through

the file, but the display doesn't update. The status line (which '-M'
enables) shows the currently displayed lines changing ('75-97',
'76-98', 77-99', etc.), but the displayed data doesn't change. Paging

forward again causes the screen to update properly.

Also, when I scroll backward ('k'), the normally-blank command line
 (bottom
line) becomes filled with the previous status line. So, if I'm at the

bottom of the file and the bottom two lines are:

 =
 .bash_profile lines 105-127/127 (END)

 =

Then, after pressing 'k', the bottom two lines will read:

 =
 .bash_profile lines 104-126/127 99%
 .bash_profile lines 105-127/127 (END)
 =

This *seems* to mean to me that 'less' can't determine the right size
my rxvt window. My theory is reinforced because 'less' suddenly finds

its brains again when I resize the window manually.

How should I go about fixing this? Thanks in advance for any
 pointers,

 ---Jason Tiller

Hi,

normally should belong to group SYSTEM now all belong to Kein,
  maybe that helps?

Which files do you mean? Didn't chown help? Any hint in
/var/log/sshd.log or in the WIndows event log?

The files I meant are /etc/ssh*, /var/empty and /var/log/sshd.log The file
/var/log/sshd.log is empty. Evidently, sshd doesn't get executed.

Sigh, why are people using textmode voluntarily...

I am sorry, but I have to. Legacy applications needing CR/LF. If you volunteer to
rewrite them, I would be very grateful :-)

Anyhow, I found out that starting ANY service fails (I tried apache and other users),
if (and only if) the service doesn't run as Administrator.

Subject: Re: SSHD on NT4...

Hi,

the tip with at xx:yy /interactive cmd helped!

I now only have the problem that I know that only Administrator gets the right root
directory (d:\cygwin), but all the others only get a wrong one (e:\). My WINNT is
installed on E:\, because I cannot have a bigger C:\ (no BIOS, but a PROM, so no
upgrade!).

I tried to give everybody the same root by running setup.exe as Administrator, but
that didn't help. Even fiddling with the registry didn't do what I wanted. How can I
give all the others the same root directory as the user it was installed with?

Ciao,
Dscho

Could you compile cygwin1.dll with the following patch:

Some more input.
Attached strace output from a successfull run with the cygwin-1.3.14
dll. What I can spot in the log is that when com4 is read it now has a
read timeout of 1000 (vtime=1000), while in the unsuccessfull runs vmin
was 0. Does that ring any bells ?

Cygwin setup and mounts

2002-11-13 Thread Sergei Okhapkin
What are the reasons for setup program to create these mounts
unconditionally (file install.cc, function do_install_thread)?

  create_mount (/usr/bin, cygpath (/bin), istext, issystem);
  create_mount (/usr/lib, cygpath (/lib), istext, issystem);

The resulting cygwin installation has a mix of /usr/bin and /bin files
in /bin (the same for /lib) and empty /usr/bin and /usr/lib directories.

Could you run strace -o tracefile m68k-palmos-gdb , do everything
you need to hang the system and send the tracefile (compressed!) to me?
The tracefile will be huge

Subject: Serial port problems with cygwin1.dll 1.3.15 on Win98SE

When using a cross debugger (m68k-palmos-gdb) talking to a Palm device
via the serial port on W98SE my system completely hangs. What I have
been able to deduce is that it happens as soon as the Palm sends a debug
packet to the PC. M68k-palmos-gdb opens the serial port, sets the
baudrate to 57600 and puts the port in raw mode. You can still interrupt
the program and do other things after this, provided the Palm has not
sent any data yet. As soon as it sends data (e.g. when you start the
program you want to debug) the whole system hangs. Ctrl-Alt-Delete gives
a blue screen etc.

I went back to older versions of cygwin1.dll and everything works fine
up to version 1.3.14. So something happened between 1.3.14 and 1.3.15. I
suspect some of the recent changes to fhandler-serial.cc.

Any hints on how to debug this? snapshots to try?
Output from cygcheck -s -r -v attached.
