Re: Snapshot 20040221: make hangs on XP
I ran a variation of the above for three days without fail so I think I can safely say that I can't reproduce this problem. I'll try different systems .. OK, this one is a Win2000SP3, AMD XP1700, 512MB, cygcheck attached. With Snapshot 20040221 I get: $ ./t.sh freeze.out make: *** virtual memory exhausted. Stop. make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs Makefile:6: *** Recursive variable `SHELL' references itself (eventually). Stop. Failed after 1487 runs [EMAIL PROTECTED]/tmp/freeze:{510}: $ uname -a CYGWIN_NT-5.0 lisi 1.5.8s(0.110/4/2) 20040221 17:58:57 i686 unknown unknown Cygwin And, by the way: http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2004-02/msg00923.html and also produce some statistics. The problem is that I tried every snapshot since 1.5.7, (unfortunately not all mentioned in this thread) and I didn't find one that works without freezing or erroring out. I wasn't asking for every snapshot mentioned in the thread. I was asking for context. If you tried a bunch of snapshots and none worked that is an adequate amount of information. There's no need to rerun anything. I don't know anything special about the context. I started trying ths testcase because since 1.5.7 I get random freezes on my Openoffice tinderbox machine and it is much smaller. (Note: this is a third machine but it's hard to change the cygwin1.dll only with ssh. I did't test different snapshots on that computer.) The first machine in this thread is a Notebook with XP home and nearly nothing besides cygwin installed, the second (the cygcheck output in this mail) is a desktop system. I ran one of the scripts for four hours and got a freeze. gdb showed that make was sitting in console input mode for some reason. Hitting ctrl-d (followed two seconds by an expletive) got things running again. I can say that is not what is happening (because it would not be using any CPU if it were waiting for input), but I will humour you the next time I see it freeze. I have (once) had that happen (make waiting for input that is), but I never thought of hitting ^D. And, just for completeness, I built and ran a CVS version from about an hour ago, and it has not failed yet (350 iterations). So, maybe someone already fixed this problem after Feb21. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/

So, maybe someone already fixed this problem after Feb21. No, not for me. I'm using the same version, see my other mail, but it seems very hard to trigger the problem. I tried to use uname instead of sleep 1. This doesn't seem to fail either (752 iterations). Boom. Error after 832 runs. $ ./u.sh freezeU.out make: *** wait: Interrupted system call. Stop. make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs Failed after 832 runs Volker Oh, come to think of it, I did get that error once with the Feb14th snapshot, after about 1500 runs. But my latter attempt ran for over 10,000 so I didn't mention it. And I've never seen it since. And I'm still running the CVS with sleep 1, and it's 1000 iterations without any problems. I will run it overnight tonight just for kicks. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/
