re: ssh refuses to enter binmode (fwd)

2002-10-18 Thread David N. Blank-Edelman
Why are you refusing to use the snapshot?

I must not have been clear. My message was about how the pre-snapshot
released version problem looked a lot like a previous bug. It had nothing
to do with whether this problem was fixed by a snapshot or whether I had
attempted to use that snapshot.

Your comment on the snapshot fix (msg01070) said:

Anyway, I've checked in a patch that may or may not be temporary. I'll
have to talk to Corinna and decide.

I thought that a very specific reminder (about a bug very much like this
one) that you had already squashed once before would be helpful to you in
the process of patching. Perhaps I was wrong, sorry.

Chris-

I'm writing as a user of another program whose behavior broke with
the new cygwin update (unison over ssh). I just wanted to pass on info
that I thought may be helpful to you when looking in to this for a more
permanent fix.

This problem looks exactly (from the user standpoint) like one that has
come and gone in the past. Specifically, it was in some of the releases
prior to 1.3.12-1. You then fixed it in that release as per this change
comment to the announcement list
(http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-announce/2002-07/msg2.html) :

 - Fix binmode/textmode problems with ssh and other programs which
 use pipes. (Christopher Faylor)

I don't know if the current breakage is related (sure looks that way to us
naive users!), but if it is, maybe this info can help you track it down.

Thanks for all of your hard work.

This is very perplexing.

you said use a snapshot and so i did, but you ignored me when i said,
that the latest snapshot i found didn't fix th problem.

I recently posted a *specific* message saying that I thought I'd fixed
your *specific* problem. This was after you reported that previous
snapshots didn't work. It wasn't in response to a specific email from
you but, that really shouldn't be necessary.

So, apparently you're now just too upset to actually try the snapshot
which is supposed to fix your problem. Too bad.

that true, but i tried the 20021017 snapshot already yesterday, and it
didn't work - today it did work (don't ask me why, might be some
dll-caching issue or somethin)

so thx for the fix.

I'm not upset, just a little disappointed, because sometimes i seem to
be ignored. My personal farourite is the ghostscript7-textmount problem.
that leads to some other questions:

- is there a list of the maintainers? or where can i usually find the
info who maintains the ghostscript-package?

- what do i need to do to link against binmode.o
I'm not familiar with configure and the rest of the autoconf-stuff.

cygwin-announce should provide you with the name of the maintainer but
that is really irrelevant. All user correspondence about packages
should be via the mailing lists. It really should be a public
discussion in 99% of the cases.

I have your message saved in my inbox to see if the ghostscript
maintainer will eventually respond. I hate to bug people about this
because it's a volunteer project but, if I see a clear problem that has
a clear solution, then I try to eventually contact the maintainer about
it. I don't do this for situations where someone says XXX isn't
working! HELP! of course. But, the ghostscript problem sounds like it
has a clear solution, even if it isn't necessarily an easy solution.

- what do i need to do to link against binmode.o
I'm not familiar with configure and the rest of the autoconf-stuff.

There's no simple answer to that question. You have to inspect the
Makefile.in or Makefile.am and maybe configure.in or configure.ac
and fit /usr/lib/binmode.o in there somewhere, as appropriate.

I'm sure that the maintainer would love a patch if you are willing
to track down what's required but, unless you really want to learn
all of the autoconf hoopla, it's probably better to just use binmode
mounts until the maintainer fixes the problem.

(I've just pinged them, fwiw)

If you need to find out maintains a cygwin package, take a look for a
filename like package-version.README in /usr/doc/Cygwin. tail or read the
file, at the bottom youll see who maintains it...
