How much ITPs where seen without a real interest or ability from the maintainer tobe? This one is not one of these, I like this tool, that was the reason I was voting, even if I wouldn't use it, I think it is nice to have an alternative to 'ls', maybe other people think similar and want to give it a try? The most packages are really needed to develop applications and to maintain packages, but OTOH Cygwin should respect the users who just want to use it as their favourite system to drive the Windows subsystem, so give them tools to use this system. Want to say, vote if you don't think it is a really bad idea to have some alternative directory lister (questions like: who needs it when we have ls? are well known, but these answers are not a veto!). I agree that diversity is a Good Thing. I also agree that it may be a good idea to introduce such diversity (more of it) into the Cygwin Net distribution I've now read the info file that comes with the package and tested it on my system. I don't think I'll use it often, but I don't think it's a bad idea to put it in the net distribution either. You've convinced me, I'm in a good mood or whatever - this has my vote. rlc -- Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold.

If it is just another directory lister with different options then I don't see a need for it. Also, if it isn't part of any other linux or unix distribution then it doesn't really fit into the core goal for cygwin. Anyway, I'm not going to veto this, but I am going to register a -1 vote until this is clarified. If it has already been discussed then I apologize. I haven't been following closely. cgf

Maintainers/Packages List
I am maintaining lists of maintainers and packages based on Christopher Faylor's, and am planning on periodically publishing them to cygwin-apps. The first list displays packages and their subordinate packages, so problems with incorrect/missing external-source headers can be easily spotted. If other potential problems are suggested, the list can change over time to act as a general review tool. The second list displays maintainers and the packages they are responsible for, so incorrect attributions can be easily discovered (if you go to your name and see something you shouldn't, or don't see something you should). I use this list to verify who is allowed to update packages (and who can vote for new ones). So, here is what I have now. Feel free to point out problems and inaccuracies. I have it scripted to mail out a copy on the first of every month after this copy. If you only want to check the packages under your name, search for Maintainers' Package List in your mail client to skip the first list. Thanks, == Daniel Reed [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://naim-users.org/nmlorg/ http://naim.n.ml.org/ Punishment often increases the feelings of estrangement and strengthens the power of resistance. -- Friedrich Nietzsche, German Philosopher This is the list of maintainers and packages as of Monday, October 27, 2003. ** PACKAGE MAINTAINERS ** Please verify the information below ** Packages are listed with their subordinate packages. A subordinate package is built from a source package under another name. Subordinate packages must be released with new versions of their parent package, and must use the same version-release designation. For a theoretical library libfoo, there might be three packages built from the same sources: libfoo Daniel Reed # .dll shared libraries, Cygwin README libfoo-devel Daniel Reed # .a static libraries, .dll.a glue, .h headers libfoo-demo Daniel Reed # .exe example programs If the current release of libfoo is 1.2-3, the current releases of libfoo-devel and libfoo-demo must also be 1.2-3. If a theoretical package bar requires libfoo to function, it is dependent on libfoo, but not subordinate to libfoo. It will appear by itself: bar Daniel Reed # .exe programs, Cygwin README If you maintain a package that does not appear correctly in this list, it may be because a setup.hint does not include a proper external-source header. === Packages' Maintainer List === _update-info-dirChristopher Faylor a2psDavid Hudson agetty Sergey Okhapkin antiwordGerrit P. Do X-related packages developed by myself need ITPs?
Should I be doing ITPs and waiting for votes? Is there a less-formal process that package posters use (e.g. Hey, look at this, if no one complains, then I am posting it.)? If this isn't interesting for cygwin-apps then just let me know and I will send review requests but not an ITP. As I said before, I felt kind of quilty that I could just upload whatever I wanted... but if everyone is okay with that, then I shouldn't be cluttering this list. Thanks, Harold

I've always considered the xfree86 part of the release as your fiefdom. However, I think that the ITP and review process is extremely valuable, so if you want to avail yourself of it, I think that the packages will benefit, assuming that there are people here who are willing to review xfree86 packages. So, it's your call either way. cgf

I will probably stick to asking for reviews, but not really waiting for votes (unless people complain loudly :). Harold
