[HEADSUP] Please try to build your packages for 64 bit
Hi maintainers, the 64 bit Cygwin seems to be quite stable now. We're still suffering from a gcc problem which seems to affect C++ inline methods using templates, so some C++ packages might not be buildable yet(*), but other than that it looks pretty good. I would like to ask those of you owning a 64 bit Windows machine to have a look into the 64 bit distro and to try to build your packages. If dependencies are missing, please tell us here. We can look into fixing the missing deps together. If you have build problems other than due to missing deps, please report here, too. There are very likely still bugs in Cygwin and there might still lurk bugs in gcc. Just make sure that you eliminated problems in your project first. Datatype mismatches are pretty common bugs. If you have noarch packages (no binaries), please check if the dependencies for those packages are fullfilled and tell us here, too, so we can go ahead adding them to the 64 bit distro. Right now, we have a couple of missing dependencies in the 64 bit distro. If one of the packages is yours, it would be nice if you could try to build it. Here's the list of missing deps as of today: ImageMagick bash-completion cvsps dbus ghostscript libjbig-devel libjbig2 perl-Authen-SASL perl-DBD-SQLite perl-DBI perl-Net-SMTP-SSL subversion-perl terminfo-extra texlive texlive-collection-bibtexextra texlive-collection-binextra texlive-collection-latexextra texlive-collection-mathextra transfig w3m xemacs-emacs-common Thanks in advance, Corinna (*) http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-developers/2013-04/msg00055.html http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-developers/2013-04/msg00056.html -- Corinna Vinschen Please, send mails regarding Cygwin to Cygwin Maintainer cygwin AT cygwin DOT com Red Hat

Yaakov fixed that on cygwin.com. I've fixed this by making use of Cygport's new setup.hint generation feature, specifically its ability to build the requires line automatically. I moved to this new feature for this package release, but I copied over the requirements from my hand-written hint files. I just removed the REQUIRES lines and verified that Cygport does the right thing here. The automatic dependency generation doesn't include ncurses explicitly, but it does include readline which depends on ncurses. I expect setup.exe will follow the dependency chain correctly.

Is there any documentation how this format differs from the PE format so that I might look into adding support for 64bit when time permits? Strange that nobody did it so far. It should be rather trivial, actually. The only noticable difference between PE and PE+ are a few different values in some of the header fields and the slightly different layout of the IMAGE_OPTIONAL_HEADER structure. For the different values in IMAGE_FILE_HEADER(*), note the fields - Machine (IMAGE_FILE_MACHINE_AMD64 instead of IMAGE_FILE_MACHINE_I386) - Characteristics (No IMAGE_FILE_32BIT_MACHINE flag) in IMAGE_OPTIONAL_HEADER(**), see - Magic (IMAGE_NT_OPTIONAL_HDR64_MAGIC vs. IMAGE_NT_OPTIONAL_HDR32_MAGIC) - SizeOfHeaders (don't know the right values off the top of my head here) As for the different IMAGE_OPTIONAL_HEADER structure layout: - BaseOfData has been removed - ImageBase, SizeOfStackReserve, SizeOfStackCommit, SizeOfHeapReserve, and SizeOfHeapCommit are 8 byte values now. I don't know how upx works under the hood, but I assume you also need the unpacker code in 64 bit. If it's not written in assembler, the 32 bit code should more or less do the right thing already. If you obsolete a package you have to create an emtpy package for the obsoleted package yourself. See, for instance, the current w32api--1.tar.bz2. It's the empty tar file for the w32api package which has been obsoeted by w32api-headers and w32api-runtime. The only noticable difference between PE and PE+ are a few different values in some of the header fields and the slightly different layout of the IMAGE_OPTIONAL_HEADER structure. OK, I'll tack it onto my todo list and see when I get to that. It would really be nice if setup64.exe wouldn't be as large as it currently is.
