Re: running CygwinX with a limited user account

Are we sure that this works with startxwin.bat ?

Some time ago I tried to mount /tmp in an user directory (I used also
%TEMP%, i.e. C:\Doc...\%USERNAME%\..\Temp) but it did not worked with
startxwin.bat: it tries to remove \cygwin\tmp\.X11-unix\X0 which,
apparently, does not know about the mount.

Instead the mount works fine if one uses startx or startxwin.sh! But in
these cases one should first start cygwin.bat and the possibility to
start the X server from a link on the desktop is more hard.

Cheers,

   angelo.

Right. One could rewrite startxwin.bat to do that using cmd.exe extended
syntax, but then it'd stop working on Win9x.

Alternatively, use 'rm -f' instead of 'del', and it should understand the
mount just fine.

 Instead the mount works fine if one uses startx or startxwin.sh!

Yes, because you're running from a Cygwin shell.

 But in these cases one should first start cygwin.bat and the possibility
 to start the X server from a link on the desktop is more hard.

Just put 'c:\cygwin\bin\bash --login -c /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.sh' in
the desktop shortcut.
HTH,
Igor

ideal Norton Internet Security 2006 config with Cygwin/X

2006-08-23 Thread n0 SPAM
Out of the box, NIS 2006 slows down Cygwin/X. I open XWin.exe to run a bash
shell. When I type at the command prompt:

ls -h | sort -r

The command prompt freezes on my Windows box for awhile. That is no longer
the case with the following tweaks to NIS2006:

1. Right click on the Norton Internet Security Tray icon. Select 'Open
Norton Internet Security'.
2. Using the drop down arrow on the Options button, select 'Norton Anti-
Virus'.
3. In the upper left hand corner, click on 'Auto-Protect'.
4. Click on 'Exclusions'.
5. Click the 'New' button. Type 'C:\cygwin' and check 'Include subfolders'.
Click 'OK'.
6. Under the 'Auto-Protect' menu, click on 'Bloodhound'. Uncheck 'Turn
Bloodhound heuristics on'. Click 'OK' and you're done!

This has made a significant difference in the speed of the bash shell for
me.

HTH someone.

Cygwin X fails to start

2006-08-23 Thread Javier Delgadillo
All,

I've been trying to install Cygwin X on a Win XP machine for the last 2
days and can't get it to work. I've done google searches for possible
solutions but the posts I've found seem outdated and no longer apply.

This appears to be a problem with the could not open default font
'fixed' error message. All of the posts I've seen regarding this imply
there is a problem with the mounts, but I've got 2 other installs here
that do not mount the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts directory. So I'm not sure
if those errors still apply.

I'm not sure what to try next as the instructions here
http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/cygwin-x-faq.html#q-error-font-eof don't seem
to solve the problem for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

keyboard problem : upper numeric keys don' t work

2006-08-23 Thread cirrus75

   Hello all!

   Xfree runs OK but upper numeric keys (not num keypad) do not work
well. Also TAB and BACKSPACE seem not to work well too. My keyboard map
seems to be OK because all other keys are OK.

   I had a similar problem with an PC emulator called QEMU. So, I
beleive this is a problem of some Windows API. I fixed QEMU problem
telling it to use directx instead of windib. I could not found any
way to fix this on Xfree, and I don't even know if Xfree uses windib.
Numeric keys shows:

1 = h
2 = ,
3 = 0~  (yes, 2 caracters)
4 = ,

5 to 0 nothing appears.

any ideas ?

thanks,
Alex
