I started XWin with the parameter -xkbmap de which caused the us-keyboard layout. Though I don't understand why but without that the german keyboard works also with a query on my remote linux box. Question 1 is obsolete.

This is the logfile of my home-desktop. Both W2K, same mirrors used (sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch is not a complete mirror of XFree86).
