[ANNOUNCEMENT] cygwin-xfree list deprecation

2015-03-03 Thread Jon TURNEY

Dear Internet,

It no longer makes much sense to have a separate list for Cygwin X
related traffic, so the cygwin-xfree list is now officially deprecated.

Reasons for this decision include:
- the level of traffic on the cygwin-xfree list is low
- splitting the traffic in this way currently serves no useful purpose
- the distinction between what is and is not an X issue is artificial,
vague, and often ignored

The cygwin-xfree list will continue to operate, but I suggest and
encourage you to use the main cygwin list for all your cygwin X server
and X application related questions, bug reports, moans, gripes, whines
and patches ;-).

The Cygwin X website and documentation will be updated to point to the
main cygwin list.

Mail delivery for the cygwin-xfree list may be turned off at some future
date, but even if that happens, the list archives will continue to be
available.

Live Long and Prosper,
Jon

[ANNOUNCEMENT] Merge of cygwin-xfree-announce into cygwin-announce

2015-03-03 Thread Corinna Vinschen
Hi folks,

it's becoming awkward having to split package announcements between two
mailing lists. In fact, there's neither a good reason having to decide
where to send an announcement, nor having to subscribe to two lists for
Cygwin package announcements.

Therefore, effectiv immediately, we're going to give up the
cygwin-xfree-announce mailing list in favor of only the cygwin-announce
mailing list.

===
In future, new Cygwin packages and package updates will be announced on
cygwin-announce only.
===

If you're not subscribed to cygwin-announce, only to cygwin-xfree-announce,
I'll suggest to subscribe to cygwin-announce instead.

For reference and archeological diggings, the cygwin-xfree-announce
archives will stay available.

Peace,
Corinna

upgraded cygwin and Xfree to latest releases "Alt-r" sequence doesn't work anymore

2012-01-24 Thread Gilles Pion
(I've used XEV to investigate)

Pressing alt key alone works normally (xev able to see "keypress" and
"keyrelease" event for "Alt_L" key)

Pressing "r" key alone is also ok (ditto)

But when pressing in sequence, the "r" up and
down events are missing

(I have no problem with other alphabetic keys)

Any idea?

You did not get this software from cygwin.com. We do not support
third-party packages of software, particularly those which are several
years old.

If you want to use TeXmacs on Cygwin, please remove your CygTeXmacs
directory and install Cygwin with the installer from the cygwin.com

Wow, that was clear. I can't blame the mailer for a nonsensical sentence.

I responded to the message but my mailer only sent it to the cygwin

Why are you duplicating the headers of the email in the body of the

The intent is to make 1.7 the default release of Cygwin. There will
be no "the rest" in a month or two.

Well, come to think of it, we could both merge cygwin + cygwin-xfree,
BUT also _resplit_ cygwin, but this time into cygwin 1.7 and cygwin-"the
rest". So the additional X traffic (which will be far less than the 1.7

Although I currently have rules to put the two lists in different mail
folders and it works well for me, but I'd also be perfectly happy with
the change. There are plenty of borderline issues where it's not
clear (to the user at least) whether the problem is X related or
cygwin related, so a unified list removes any need to speculate. With
the 1.7 release now officially available for public test, there are
bound to be issues in X apps, where the cause is really in the cygwin
DLL, so merging the lists asap will save everyone having to play the
guess-the-list game.

A couple of things to consider (although you're probably way ahead of
me):

Will mail sent to the xfree ML email address be diverted (or mirrored)
to the cygwin ML? Human nature being what it is, it's unrealistic to
expect everyone replying to an old thread to remember to change the
To: line.

Also, what will happen to the archives? Will they be merged too? If
they are, any links to xfree archived posts (both within the ML
itself, and also from bookmarks/blogs/forums/other MLs/etc) will be
broken. Would it be possible to alias the old URLs to avoid breaking
links?

If the archives are not merged, the threading should at least be
maintained (both ways) between the old xfree list and the merged list.
(i.e. a reply to a message on cygwin-xfree which goes to the cygwin ML
needs the References entry to point back to the xfree archive, and the
xfree message needs the Follow-ups entry to point to the cygwin
archive).

From: "Christopher Faylor"

I could do the cygwin-xfree -> cygwin mirroring fairly easily and even
prepend a "[X11]" to the subject. Going in the other direction would
require more work. And, it seems like that would start to make things
more complicated.

We could adopt a convention of prepending [X11] or [Xorg] in front of
X-related messages but I'm sure that people who don't want to see
traffic wouldn't consider that an acceptable alternative to a separate
mailing list.

You are correct. This also involves more work on our parts, since we have
to write email rules to delete any non [X11] or [Xorg] emails. Plus, let's
not forget the folks that will reply with non-X related emails about a
cygwin emails, just because something in the conversation reminded them or
another cygwin issue.

For us old-timers, what were the historical reasons again, and why/how
did they go away?

Good question. My email records don't go back far enough to know for
sure and I don't see anything telling in the mailing list archives. I
think that one of the early maintainers (maybe Suhaib Siddiqi) didn't
want to read the cygwin list to look for cygwin-xfree questions.

Yes, I remember that.

I believe I was actually somewhat reluctant to do the split because (I
know this will be hard to believe) I thought there would be end-user
confusion that would require a lot of "use the other list" shuttling.

OTOH, maybe I was actively insisting on it and relishing the chance to
tell people they were off-topic.

I'm just proposing this now because Yaakov asked about it and Jon
indicated that he would be ok with it. Yaakov obviously reads both
lists and he has observed that the lines are sometimes blurred between
what's a X question and what isn't.

Another thing that occurred to me is that we could keep the two lists
and stop telling people that they *had* to ask questions about X here.

True. The downside there is there would exist an artificial split
where some discussion would happen only on Cygwin-X while others would
happen on the main list. This would be tough to keep track of and be a
stumblling block for newbies who might actually look in the archives
for answers. If there is a goal to maintain the idea of two lists
while really having only one, what about having the Cygwin-X list exist
as a "head" only. It would be similar to the announce lists in that it
would forward all email to the main list but would be different in that
there would be no separate list archive. I'm not sure how easy it
would be to set something like this up but it would address the
concerns some have expressed about filtering out the main Cygwin list
info.

Yep, good point. On thinking about this again, I realize that my
suggestion doesn't really address the "I only want to see the X
messages" crowd, since people could still (and maybe would feel
encouraged to) just send email to the main list and thereby
bypass those only on the X list (which I believe was the point
you were trying to address with the mention of mirroring from
the main list to the X list.) So, in retrospect, it's a dumb
idea! Sorry for the noise.

For us old-timers, what were the historical reasons again, and why/how did
they go away?

That may have been true until November 12. But in the last four weeks
since X11R7.4, there have been ~500 messages on cygwin-xfree, including
30 announcements (including 3 xserver revisions). Comparatively, there
have been ~660 messages on cygwin including ~45 announcements.

I suspect that's probably an untypical situation. I can give you some
figures for the 3 months from August 17th (when I first registered) to
November 17th (when I unsubscribed from xfree). These figures include
announcements as well as posts that were duplicated on both lists:-

cygwin.xfree = 194 messages
cygwin = at least 1374 messages

I can't give an accurate figure for the cygwin list because I regularly have
to unsubscribe from it due to the high volume of traffic. It wouldn't
surprise me if the true figure isn't 50 percent higher or more (i.e. ten
messages on cygwin list for every one on cygwin.xfree).

This is ridiculously few compared to 2 years ago when Harold L Hunt put

The historical reasons for merging the cygwin and cygwin-xfree lists no
longer seems to exist so I am contemplating merging the two lists.

If anyone has a compelling reason why this should not happen please send
it to one of the two lists. If I don't hear a coherent argument against
doing this, I'll throw the switch over the weekend.

Btw, I'm only mildly sympathetic to arguments like "It will be more
email for me". I'm more concerned with having to constantly shuttle
people back and forth between the two lists. Unless there is a
compelling argument to the contrary, I think that the fact that people
are confused about which list to use outweighs the increase in email
traffic for people who just want to hear about cygwin/x.

xfree fails to establish listening socket on Windows terminal server

2008-05-30 Thread Kent Tong

Hi,

I am using xorg-x11-base (6.8.99.901-1) on Cygwin (1.5.25-14). It
works fine on my computer but it fails on a Windows 2003 terminal
server. If I login as the Administrator, it works. If I login as a normal
user, it fails with the following error. So, this is definitely a permission
problem. Any idea? Thanks!

Re: xfree: problem killing java processes

2006-10-24 Thread Hari Krishna Dara

When I start Java processes in an rxvt window (no X), ^C returns the
control without actually killing all the child processes.

In this specific case, I am running ant, either through ant.bat, ant
(shell script) or through a custom perl wrapper (which directly
executes java bypassing ant.bat or ant).

When the perl wrapper is used it is started from another batch file,
so here is how the process execution:
- batch starts a perl command
- perl command starts java (ant)
- ant starts another java process

The process tree as shown by sysinternals' process explorer is:

bash
 cmd
   perl
 java
   java

When I hit ^C, bash and cmd exit immediately leaving perl and the two
java processes.

Similarly, when I use the ant shell script, I see:

sh
 java
   java

Hitting ^C in this case kills sh and the outer java process leaving
the last java process.

When using ant.bat, I see:

bash
 cmd
   java
 java

Hitting ^C in this case kills bash and cmd, leaving the two java processes.

A bit of analysis shows that the propagation of kill signal stops with
the first non-cygwin application. I searched for known issues and
found a thread about killing JBoss server, but there were not many
details on what exactly the problem was and there was no resolution.
While I can't believe that no one else has been seeing this error, I
can only hope that I am missing to see some known information on this.
I appreciate any help on how to solve this problem if there is one
existing. I have very recent cygwin:

CYGWIN_NT-5.1 whitney 1.5.19(0.150/4/2) 2006-01-20 13:28 i686 Cygwin

Thank you,
Hari

xfree issues on cygwin - that old cannot find font 'fixed' problem

2006-09-06 Thread S James S Stapleton
I can get it working - I did before, but not before tomorrow, and I was
hoping to get it fixed today. I have the problems with the cannot find font
'fixed'. I tried the stuff in the FAQ, but the directory didn't not appear
in the mount list (nor any directory below it except "/"). I could not
manually mount it, mount complained /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts was invalid).

The font dir does show up, and the misc subdir has 446 entries.

Yesterday, I had my notebook with me, which runs FreeBSD, and I just tar'ed
and copied over my fonts directory, untar'ed it, and the problem was solved.
Sadly, I left my notebook at home, and yesterdays attempt at installing KDE
under cygwin broke cygwin bad enough I had to reinstall.

Any suggestions on getting this fixed today? Did I do something wrong with
the mount procedure?
Since I saw this in mailing list archives, yes I am running in windows
linebreak mode.

Thanks,
-Jim Stapleton

Two options:

1. Use the "--depth" parameter of Xwin (see the comments inside
/usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.sh, it only works with --fullscreen).

2. Don't use XWindows use VNC.

Try installing the xorg-x11-xwin-gl server. It's marked as
***EXPERIMENTAL***, but I've been running it without problem for months.
I've not done too much extreme GL stuff, but what I've tried all seems
to work. You'll also need the opengl package for your GL clients.

If you have problems with the native (i.e. accelerated) GL server, you
can use the Mesa package with the non-GL XWin as a fallback.

Emacs and vi (yes I use both - we're not all editor bigots) do just
fine for me ;)

I'm not sure what characteristics you had in mind. The server startup
parameters are documented in /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.bat (which may be
moved to /bin soon). This is the file that you need to edit.

Once X is running, xset, xmodmap etc. are your friends. You can add
these to the end of startxwin.bat.

I assume what you were really after was a GUI X launcher application.
There was talk of such a beast quite a while back, but I think it was
shelved because it would need to be a native Windows application and
would therefore not sit well within cygwin. I don't know if any
further work has been done in this direction.

Then maybe you are not using startxwin.sh ??

How are you starting X ?

That didn't seem to help. I still get the MS Windows window manager as
well as the IRIX wm. Also, after I reverted, the tekplot application
will now not plot anything at all.

Here's the error message I got:

=>
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 1 (X_CreateWindow)
Serial number of failed request: 9
Current serial number in output stream: 22

Look in /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.sh and look for the line that says...

XWin -multiwindow -clipboard -silent-dup-error &

and change it to

XWin -rootless -clipboard -silent-dup-error

That will give you an Xserver with no window manager and then allow you
to start the one from your IRIX box.

You might be on to something, though. I started up the IRIX window
manager, 4Dwm. Most of my windows then had the standard MS-Windows
frame, and within that, the Motif-style window manager
decorations/frame. If I made a plot using Tekplot, and moved the plot
window around when it initially had the MS-Windows frame around it, then
the window would redraw once. At that time the "extra" MS-Windows style
frame would disappear, and the only remaining frame was the 4Dwm frame.
At that point, nothing I could do seemed to cause a redraww of the plot
window. I'm using rxvt. Now, I'm wondering if I ought to use only native
X-windows apps, xterms, etc.

I'd also like to be able to start up Xwin with NO window manager, if I
can start one up on the remote machine (like 4Dwm on the remote IRIX
machine). Is that possible? Which window manager starts up when the X
server is started up on the local PC?

O.k. It sounds like tekplot's problem then on the way it's dealing with
window events.

Tekplot application repeatedly redraws under XFree

2005-10-11 Thread Berndt, Jon S
Greetings:

I am using Cygwin/Xfree:

version number:11.0
vendor string:The Cygwin/X Project
vendor release number:60802000

The operating system is MS Windows XP.

I have found that when using the Tekplot application, if I move the
window around a bit, almost always it will begin to perpetually redraw
the graph. All other applications I have tried appear to work as
expected: Netscape, Firefox, Clearcase, Nedit, etc.

I have tried running with backing store turned both ON and OFF (as well
as save-unders) - don't know if that makes a difference.

I have tried searching the web, readign FAQS, etc., but can't find
anything that helps.

Any suggestions?

Best regards,

Jon Berndt

Reply-to: cygwin-xfree at cygwin dot com

I'm running release 6.7.0.0-12 with the arguments "-multiwindow
-clipboard". I run the X11 version of Emacs (from the
emacs-X11-21.2-13.tar.bz2 package) which has tooltip popup windows for the
toolbar icons. Even after I minimize the window, I get the tooltips if I
leave the mouse where the toolbar used to be. I just wanted to report the
problem; I don't know if this is a known issue. I didn't see anything
about it in the mailing list archives.

Thanks,

David

Doug, that sounded like a reasonable idea. However, it didn't work for me. :)

I'm thinking that there exists some binding between the Xwin process and the
terminal window that
started the process, and that perhaps I need to start it in a way (fork, etc.)
that eliminates
this binding.

As I attempted to say, the bash process ($$) ends and Xwin lives on (both
before and after I
manually close the window).

Thanks for the suggestion.

XFree 6.8.2.0-4- Failed Graphics startup, White windows.

2005-08-01 Thread Lowe Rob-ROBLOWE2
Hi Guys,

I have a problem with my XP installation on a Dell Latitude laptop. My X
knowledge is sadly lacking I'm afraid I have always looked plaintively at IT
for help on such things in the past. I have just installed the latest, I think,
version of cygwin and tried to start up the X server.

I copied the template .xinitrc file to my local user directory and then typed
startx. Then a window opens with nothing in it, just plain white. I have used
both startx from a cygwin bash prompt and startxwin from DOS, same result.
However when I installed it on my basic PC system at home it worked first time.

If I try to open xclock from the start menu, likewise, I get a plain white
box. I have found I can type commands into my plain white xterm box, I can't
see them, but they do execute. So for example I typed "xterm -fg white -bg
black" and I got another plain white box, the "~" in the title bar is white
too... Any ideas? I'm not sure where to start I have wondered if it is
colour map related, but wouldn't know how to tell.

I found the log file and have included it below, along with my .xinitrc and
.Xresources. I have noted that the size of the white box varies when I delete
the .xresources file... I dunno if this is a clue... I found on the net some
hints toward it maybe being an old DirectX version so I have downloaded the
latest version of DirectX (v9), I have closed all other programs to try and
ensure free (non-swapped) RAM, no joy.

Hope you can point me in the right direction, thanks in advance,

Rob

Hi all,

I actually use Cygwin/X to display software from remote Unix servers.

It really works fine except with matlab 6 :
When I launch matlab, the main window appears on my local display but
the keyboard seems inactive.
(I cannot type anything inside the matlab's command window)

Moreover, a left click is a "paste" (?), middle is also "paste" while
the right click opens correctly the context menu.

Maybe a problem with modifier keys. Try disabling numlock.

Quite simple and it works .. thanks !
and if anyone knows how I could get a working numpad that would be great !

Cygwin-Xfree 6.8.2.0-1 - Keyboard problem with Matlab 6.X

2005-07-07 Thread Mathieu OUDART

Hi all,

I actually use Cygwin/X to display software from remote Unix servers.

It really works fine except with matlab 6 :

the keyboard seems inactive.

(I cannot type anything inside the matlab's command window)

Moreover, a left click is a "paste" (?), middle is also "paste" while
the right click opens correctly the context menu.

I can also notice that the statusbar (at the bottom of the matlab
window) stays on "initializing" and never switches to "Ready".

I've found some keyboard problems on the mathworks' web site, but only
for some specific keys like numpad and those workarounds don't work for me.

Is it a known problem ? Is there something to do ?

Regards.

I've checked this but can not come up with a solution. Actually it seems the
taskbar
explicitly hides from those windows and does even expose windows which were
below
the taskbar before when the Cygwin/X window (even the root window) gets
activated.
But I could not find a place where such an behaviour is forced.

It seems you'll have to live with that.

perhaps your .Xdefaults has cr/lf line-endings rather than lf-endings.

I get these same errors if the .Xdefaults file happens to be in DOS ( LF/CR

I get these same errors if the .Xdefaults file happens to be in DOS ( LF/CR

Thanks. That works in .Xdefaults. I must have been doing something wrong. Even
though the colours are right I get strange messages when I open a new xterm

" to type Booleanonvert string "false
" to type Intot convert string "10
" to type Booleanonvert string "true
" is not definedame "green4
" is not definedame "#00E000

Even more strange: the taskbar will hide if a Cygwin/X window has the focus.
and other windows which were behind the taskbar before are now visible too.
I'll have to take a closer look. Maybe this was once added as a feature to
make areas visible which were hidden otherwise.

You can add bugs to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=xorg
Component is DDX/cygwin and assign the bug to ago at freedesktop dot org.

Xfree covers "always on top" taskbar

2005-06-29 Thread Tobias Polzin
Hi,

I configured my win-taskbar to be "always on top" and other windows respect
this, but any Xfree window (e.g. an xterm) can be put above the taskbar,
which is quite annoying.

I start XWin with:

XWin -dpi 92 -multiwindow -clipboard -multiplemonitors -xkbvariant
nodeadkeys -ac

The "Maximize" Button works correctly, in the sense that it leave space for
the taskbar.

By the way: Is there a bug-tracking database for Cygwin-Xfree? If not,
wouldn´t it be good to have one?

Regards,
  Tobias

The bash thing sounds like a general Cygwin problem, so you should take it
to the main Cygwin list (redirecting and setting Reply-To:). Do you
happen to run a VPN in addition to your wireless connection?
Also, please review <http://cygwin.com/problems.html> to see how you can
provide the relevant information about your system.

Cygwin Xfree not functional on laptop with wireless

2005-01-19 Thread Browning, Jeff
All:

I have installed Cygwin Xfree on my T40 laptop and yesterday when in the
office over a normal wired ethernet connection, it was working fine.

Today, I am working from home over a wireless connection, and Cygwin has
become completely non-functional. The bash shell shows nothing,
basically it's just dead. Running the startxwin.bat file from a normal
DOS window shows the usual start message. The X icon appears, but will
display nothing. Eventually, the X icon vanishes, apparently a silent
crash.

Any clue what is going on here?

Regards,
Jeff

Re: openGL problem in cygwin-xfree?

2005-01-01 Thread Gene C. Ruzicka
My sincerest apologies for the earlier repetitive messages, but
when I first sent them, I got a message saying they had not
been delivered, so I persistently tried revising them to make them
short enough to be deliverable. Alas, the messages did get
through --- but only partially --- despite the server saying otherwise.
So, sorry about the (unintentional) deluge.

I am posting the material to a website, and once that gets
done, I'll simply send a message go this group giving
the URL where the problem is described. Once again,
sorry about the spam deluge.

Re: openGL problem in cygwin-xfree?

2005-01-01 Thread Gene C. Ruzicka
I am sending this message in two parts because the cygcheck
listings cause the message to exceed the limitation on mesage size
set by the server.

This message further illustrates the problem of openGL working
and then not working with remote TCL/TK applications in different
cygwin builds.To demonstrate the problem,
I restored an earlier version of cygwin I had backed up with
which I successfully ran, remotely, a TCL/TK application
that employs openGL. I have attached cygcheck files from
the cygwin setups where openGL functions properly; the
cygcheck output where openGL fails (openGL_malfunctions.txt)
is in the following message. Interestingly, both setups use
the same version of openGL (version 1.1.0-7), but there
are differences elsewhere in the build. Can anyone infer
from these data the reason why TCL/TK bombs with the
more recent cygwin build?

Thanx in advance for your help.

I'm sending this message in two parts because the cygcheck

Fw: openGL problem in cygwin-xfree?

2004-12-30 Thread Gene C. Ruzicka

First, I hope I've directed this question to the correct
mailing list: I'm not sure if it's pertinent to this list
or to the cygwin list.

I frequently use cygwin-xfree to log onto external
host machines, usually Solaris or SGI-based.
This environment worked quite well for me
until recently, when I updated my Cygwin
installation. Ever since then, it appears, that none
of the openGL applications running on the host
machine have been able to access openGL in the
cygwin-xfree server. For example, here is the
error message I get from an application based on
TCL/TK scripting, which interfaces with openGL
using the togl package:

Togl: couldn't get visual while executing
"togl $dw -width $wwidth -height $wheight -rgba true -double true
-depth true -ident Box2 -overlay true"

Apparently, the TCL/TK application can't locate the openGL
facility, anywhere. Another application, the CFD visualization
software FIELDVIEW, does not work when openGL graphics
are specified specified, but works fine when X-based graphics are
specified.

Has anyone experienced anything like this recently, and/or
can they assist in finding this problem? I've attached the
cygcheck output, and I've tried re-installing the openGL
libary, with no success. I'm contemplating simply
reinstalling all of cygwin-xfree, if worse comes to worse.

Thanx in advance for any help. The cygcheck output is
attached.

The current version is xorg-x11 6.8.1. XFree 4.4 is not supported anymore
and very outdated. I recommend to install the xorg-x11 packages from
cygwin setup as outlined in the cygwin-x users guide
(x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/cygwin-x-ug.html)

I don't believe you need to run the -configure, since the cygwin X server
does not (unlike the Unix server) contain a variety of loadable drivers.

Cannot Start XFree version 4.4.0

2004-12-22 Thread Terrence White
I have cygwin installed, and now I am installing XFree 4.4.0.

The istallation Xinstall.sh script ran with no errors.

After the installation completes, the instructions direct me to configure
XFree by running:

XFree86 -configure

But I cannot find an executable by this name.
I do not have the xf86config nor the anxf86cfg files on my file system either.

I tried to run startx under /usr/X11R6/bin, but I get the following popup
error from xinit.exe:

Unable to locate Component

"The application has failed to start because cygcygipc-2.dll was not found. Re-
installing the application may fix the problem."

I tried re-installing several times, and I still do not have cygcygipc-2.dll.
The Xinstall.sh script runs without error each time.

Any ideas?

Thanks both, it sounds like it should be reasonably painless then. I
don't have many (any?) scripts or anything that will be affected by
the xterm move as my major use for Cygwin/X is as an X server for my
Linux desktop on my Win2k machine.

We're getting broadband this week hopefully so I'll probably wait for
that before doing the big download/upgrade.

Here's one major PITA: xterm has moved from /usr/X11R6/bin to /usr/bin.
If you have any scripts, batch files, or shortcuts that hardcode
/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm, you'll need to either change them to use
/usr/bin/xterm, or add a symlink in /usr/X11R6/bin to /usr/bin/xterm.

There should be only minor issues. XF86Config is not compiled in anymore.
Lot's of bugfixes...

But actually xorg 6.7.0 was just the next evolution of xfree 4.3.0 and
fits in the old release tree

xf 4.2
xf 4.3
xorg 6.7.0
xorg 6.8.0
xorg 6.8.1

So there should not be any big problems

Some time soon I'm going to have to upgrade my present Cygwin/X
installation which is mostly 4.3.0.x Xfree to the latest Xorg
versions.

How painless is this likely to be? I run Cygwin/X on a Win2k machine
and use it to display my Slackware Linux desktop using xdm.

Are you running XWin from a network share? I've noticed a massive increase of

After doing this 50 times, it got boring and I gave up.

Last time I debugged XFree86, I didn't have this problem(or maybe once
or twice).

How many times should I have to endure this requester under normal
circumstances?

Perhaps something is actually wrong?

Ouch.

To even debug XFree86 I have to fix a long outstanding complicated

This is normal -- this is the way Cygwin (newlib?) tests pointers. Just
continue from that point. I think there are two or three of those in the
normal initialization sequence.

I've previously built XWin w/debug info and debugged it in GDB.

But this time I ran into a new problem:

When I run XWin in GDB, it constantly gets access violations. This is
during startup, and before I've got some sort of understanding of this,
I don't want to attempt anything more ambitious.

how one does it in cygwin? Thank you
