Maybe, so long as the work being computed over is decentrally sourced like bitcoin transactions are. ie: You can't trust big pharma or even seti@home to not eventually corrupt say the flow of work source units to eventually preferential / adversarial to you entities. However it is conceivable that every miner could downlink the random sky of the universe through their own personally owned satellite dishes / RTL-SDR units into a cooperative long baseline shared data distribution mesh and somehow crunch away at that with its unit verification by peers being the proof of work upon which blocks ride. Yet still, unless you have a way around cryptanalysis / easy attack that SHA-256 and the other hard crypto were instituted to prevent?... no savings there, you'd just be computing two things on one chain, which could wind up with one endeavour being felt pointless, thus taking down the other for being suboptimal waste, unless you could plugin other crap like over ETH. Maybe you can design one. > I take only a mild interest in Bitcoin having sold (used, actually) a number > of coins at $400-$600 a couple years > ago and feeling foolish now So long as cryptocurrency remains unstoppable under various remaining and hopefully increasing freedoms, and up till the time it reaches forex capital flow equilibrium with any remaining fiat currencies, it will be on sale, and probably quite profitable and world changing compared to other investments. Most seem to say a 5-10% allocation towards crypto would not be foolish, even up against any risk of total loss. Over 8+ years since the first of many Genesis says that won't happen. Hodling says you can say you were there for the next 8.

The "mint: could be SETI or genome projects or the like. The way we thought to get rid of the energy problem would be to only issue a very very small portion of the blockchain. The obvious problem is the centralization, though there could be many signers that could issue work-coins for worthy projects. Zk-SNARK related crypto is no different. Continued publication and review will yield better understanding of its security and any potential weaknesses and breaks. Calling a crypto new pursuant to that process is fine. Considering if new crypto is redundant use case and design to existing well tested crypto families is fine. Using new crypto in critical applications can be debated. Simply calling new crypto bad or good without that public process backing up the finding is wrong. For coins that offer two modes, any default as to private or transparent should be left to user choice, with client unset and unusable upon startup until set pursuant to plainly documented helptext, with per tx options thereafter. Then this is a non issue. Many news outlets fail to understand that the docs say that for the ceremony to fail it is all-must-fail, not one-must-fail. Review the actual docs and code, determine if they are both correct and strong. "Cypherpunk Desert Bus" including intermediate versions and as Updated on/after 20171010... archive.org, and other internet commentaries from others available to date... Yes, it is a good thing that you can search and find all sorts of material regarding the crypto behind Zerocoin and Zerocash that needs to continue going through the very serious matter and process of understanding, reviewing. proving, reproducing builds and ceremonies, etc. Here are two more papers... http://zerocoin.org/ http://zerocash-project.org/ Zcash seems actively calling for such review. People should engage in that review since regardless whether Zcash any of the other Z coins or even cryptocurrency is of interest, the new zero knowledge crypto and use cases will apply to a wide range of applications, thus it really does need to be proven or debunked by a much wider crypto and applied community. No different than say both the underlying crypto and ceremonies of DNS root and CA keys... serious business. Crap about founders rewards, "volatility", etc could apply to any coin and isn't part of zk-snark crypto, builds, ceremonies. Who designed and implemented a crypto could apply, though usually ends up being transcended / mooted over sufficent timescales under opensource public analysis. As with the ongoing "M" mix question, the only way to answer the "Z" question is to get down to the business of reviewing it...

Re: RAYZER'S WET DREAM COME TRUE: BITCOIN CRASHES LOL
Actually a real alternative digital currency based on a rational and stable commodity, such as hemp, would be good. But the kind of scumbags interested in btc would NEVER consider investing in something they couldn't get rich on quick, so the whole concept is fuck-ed. If, by some quirk of fate, btc had appeared in the 1980s or early 90s before those scumbags began infesting the computer industry, it MIGHT HAVE worked out, but as I said before, TimMay's ideation of btc died in infancy. Those scumbags btw, are undoubtedly why TM retired to the hills of Corrolitos, where hippies once ran free before the geeks moved in, and gtfo of the industry. Re: Apple iPhone - blatant crooks
NYTimes has a different take: the battery feature is not malicious, merely a way to prolong power. Claims Apple should have announced it rather than being discovered. Apple secrecy is the problem, a very widespread malady in tech glamorization, deceptive hype, market manipulation, not alone in crypto and cybersecurity flim-flam derived from the mother lode of self-enriching secrecy, national security, that evil demon born from auto-insemination religion. Tech is a secular religion, inherently corrupt, exploitive, dressed in sheep's wool of ugly architecture, raunchy couture, most of it sexually predatory. Not only celebrated as outside the law by Assange, Trump and Eric Schmidts by the thousands. Heads down. Apple's incentive here is obvious - get you to upgrade to the latest & "greatest", because damn the current model is really starting to feel it's age... Of course they never publicized that they were doing this or that a far cheaper battery replacement would restore performance, a trade off that no doubt many users would've made rather than shell out for a whole new model they don't really need.
