That's where you're wrong kiddo! Just a few obvious O M G
"government" tactics:

 National security.

The illegality of retroactive laws never stopped us from
retroactively applying new laws (notwithstanding the illegality of
such laws for other prima facie reasons).

 Anti-terror.

Here in Australia we already have the most horrific "anti-terror"
(anti freedoms) laws you could imagine Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao coming
up with to "ensure the success of the regime" (did I say regime? I
meant revolution. Sorry, did I say revolution? I meant Democracy...
Ahhh there, that's feeling better already.)

Your trust in the application of the fule of law is astounding.

For a few years, I've been mystified about how  any American authority could
prosecute Julian Assange, and certainly not for his actions in regard to the
2016 elections.  It is generally figured by the MSM that Assange accepted
various emails and published them, but it isn't clear that those emails (or,
anyway, most of those emails) came from Russian sources.  And there is already
a precendent ("Pentagon Papers") that there can be no prior restraint for such
publication, even if the publisher knew that the information was illegally
taken from a government source.
And, due to 'discovery' rules, the American government would have to reveal a
great deal about what they knew, and how they knew it.  Just about all
downside, very little upside.

Zerowedgie chimes in, or rather someone apparently named "Robert
Gore":

If the US government prosecutes Julian Assange and WikiLeaks,
it will mark a point of no return.

“
 The First Amendment

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment
 of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
 or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press;
of the right of the people peaceably to assemble,
and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
”

We’ll never know what “average” Germans thought on November 11,
1938, the day after Kristallnacht. Perhaps a few recognized it for
what it was: a turning point, an acceleration of Germany’s descent
into hell. America’s Crystal Night looms, and if it occurs, only a
few will recognize it for what it is.

The fate of Julian Assange is the fate of one man, but it is also
the fate of one of our most important freedoms. There won’t be
shattered plate glass from vandalized businesses littering the
streets, synagogues smashed, graves unearthed, or people herded
onto trains. But his prosecution by the US government would destroy
an inestimable value, one enshrined in the First Amendment, for
which generations of Americans have fought and died: the right of
the people and its press to inform the people and to hold their
  government to account.

a "politician" says, always expect to get fucked.

Of course they do that. But curiously they put pictures
most haven't seen. Pictures can draw sympathetic effects
from otherwise would be believers of their fake news.

Here, pictures of a human being, Assange... one who
must be supported and allowed to walk the earth freely,
speaking freely, about whatever he wishes.

Hopefully the day will soon come when all will have
those freedoms.
