Re: Multiple passports?

If I apply for a new one now, and then apply for a another one once
the gov starts RFID-enabling them, will the first one be
invalidated? Or can I have two passports, the one without RFID to
use, and the one with RFID to play with?

I am not a State Dept person, but my experiences in this are...

If you get a new one, the old one has to accompany the application and
is invalidated when the new one is issued. (Invalidated by stamping
the 'data' page with big red block letters INVALID.) The old, now
invalid is returned with the new one...

The only people that I knew that had two passports were those with an
Official (red) passport or a Diplomatic (black) passport. If they
wanted to go play tourist, they had to also have a tourist (Blue)
passport.

As for applying for one now, I think the deadline for the non-RFID
passwords is about 3 days away (31 Oct 2005), but I could be wrong.
(In other words, if your application is not in processing by 31 Oct,
then you get the new, improved, RFID passport.)

Gregory Hicks

No, but the phone now SAYS that location info is OFF except to E911...

Whether or not it actually IS turned off is a moot point. How to check?

 Dave;

Can anyone on IP project what sort of US regulatory exposure this
will place upon Skype? I have my suspicions, but I would prefer the
opinions of those more immersed in the field.

Well... Based on eBay's stated privacy policy, this will open up pen
tracing to LEOs with just a phone call at the least.

At the worst, Skype users will soon be getting new software that allows
LEOs to backdoor skype crypto and get free access to those phone calls
(also based on eBay's stated privacy policy...)

Lauren Weinstein's Blog Update: Public Call for Skype to Release
Specifications

September 12, 2005

http://lauren.vortex.com/archive/000151.html

Greetings. As I noted in a
href=http://lists.elistx.com/archives/interesting-people/200509/msg00122.html;
a recent IP posting/a, eBay's purchase of the popular Skype VoIP
service (now official) leads to new concerns over the proprietary
nature of Skype's security and encryption systems, which will now be
under the control of an extremely large and powerful corporate entity.

For eBay and Skype to have a chance of maintaining the goodwill and
trust of Skype users, I call on Skype to forthwith release the
specifications and implementation details of Skype's encryption and
related technologies.

This disclosure should ideally be made to the public, but at a minimum
to an independent panel of respected security, privacy, and encryption
experts, who can rigorously vet the Skype technology and make a public
report regarding its security, reliability, and associated issues.

You might try sending email to that address. If you don't get a
response, either it's not a good address or he thinks you're an idiot.
(Or he's dead, but he wasn't last I knew.)

He's not... Or he has a really, really good autoresponder. Just saw

It looks like the minder remailer is under attack - I've
gotten about 20 messages with little or not content,
and a small zip file attached.

Don't feel picked on. I've noticed about 20/day... About 220 since
Aug 19th.

Symptoms are:

A Content-Type: application/x-compressed; size of 0 or 8 bytes.
File, so far, is ALWAYS a .zip with names like payment.zip,
funny.zip, account-details.zip, test.zip... May have some text
designed to get you to open the .zip...

The message is supposed to be from your ISP complaining about your
account.

Personally, I think it is a virus with a 'bug' because my virus
filters have caught about the same number with much larger payloads.

Gregory Hicks
