To all those interested I would suggest trying the Austrian Consulate
& or Embassy in your area first solicitors can prolong be expensive,
next those that were young & deported never carried any documents on
their persons ,it was the parents. Czernowitz authorities have the
original birth register. Up to 1920 Bukovina was Austrian if you
remember ,some stories of your parents' past bring it up. Whatever you
do try the Austrian Embassy or Consulate directly they will advise you
no guessing. Got mine within 4 month. Good luck alles beste

Generally speaking, under the new Austrian citizenship law you shouldn’t need a
lawyer to apply. The documentation requirements would be on the Austrian
Embassy in Israel website . I’m sure they will be cooperative.
The main issue is how many of these documents you still hold or can get hold
of, especially the birth certificates going back to the original Austrian
citizen in the family.

I was fortunate that my father was always very careful with documentation and
took a complete set with him when he left Vienna in 1938 for Palestine.

RE: [czernowitz-l] Austrian Passport

2021-11-27 Thread Karin Perrin
Hello all

I did attempt the Austrian route. I live in London and went on the British
website of the Austrian Embassy to find the link which gives you the long list
of documents they require. Any documents that are not Austrian have to be
apostilled in the country they originate from. In the UK the Foreign Office
apostilles any UK documents. Documents may also need to be translated (by an
official accredited translator) into German.

The list includes a demand for the address your parents/ grandparents lived at
in Austria (or what constituted Austria) - I suppose with some proof - which is
particularly difficult.

Any Romanian papers for instance need to be sent to Bucharest to be apostilled
and that can be risky in terms of them getting lost and never reaching the
right authorities or never getting back to you. (this is what the Romanian
Embassy told me personally). As Czernowitz and Radauti were Romanian in 1939
you may well have many papers from Romania. It would of course be easier if you
happened to have relevant papers dating back from the Austrian Monarchy
and can prove parentage etc.

I personally think that your chances of success depend largely on the amount of
your parent's documentation you still have. I know some members of this group
have not had any difficulty but I believe their ancestry was easy to trace back
with official papers.

The Austrian Embassy website in Israel where Shaul lives is the first port of
call for him - the equivalent Embassy for Alisa will also have a website. I
would not send any papers without first checking carefully you have everything
on their list. I did find it very difficult.

I am by no means an expert but speak only from personal experience. I have
decided to try the Romanian Passport route as I have found a friendly and
welcoming reception at the Romanian Embassy here (I was born in Romania with
grandparents from the Bukovina on both sides)

Good luck and kind regards
Karin

Good luck

Hi,

I am in a similar situation. My parents-Morgenstern moved from Cernowitz to

Thank you so much,
