I agree, that lensfun should collect all the lenses (at the end). The
question is, if darktable should offer a quick solution for alias
lenses, which the user can define *immediately*. IMHO yes.

So if darktable allows alias lenses by the user, which are not in the
lensfun database, the user should be informed, that the dt-alias-lens
is now available in the lensfun database, so that the dt-alias can be
removed. Actually it is not so important if it is an alias lens. If I
think a workaround could be to use the correction of lens B for lens A,
I should be able to do this.

IMHO the xmp-file should contain the lensfun-lens, and not the
alias-name, which lensfun doesn't know at this time. This is the same
as I do manually now.

I fear this isn't included with Ubuntu Xenial as well as
g-lensfun-update-data. In earlier discussions nobody mentioned this.

# aptitude search lensfun | cut -c1-60
i gimp-lensfun- Gimp plugin to correct
p gimp-lensfun:i386 - Gimp plugin to correct
i A liblensfun-data - Lens Correction librar
v liblensfun-data:i386-
p liblensfun-dev - Lens Correction librar
p liblensfun-dev:i386 - Lens Correction librar
p liblensfun-doc - Lens Correction librar
i A liblensfun0 - Lens Correction librar
p liblensfun0:i386- Lens Correction librar

I searched a little bit, but still don't know how to use it with Ubuntu.

Thanks for this discussion! I think this is a very important topic how
to manage not recognized lenses and cameras. As you already mentioned,
camera aliases are important too. My lens is recognized e.g., but the
camera not, so I have to define a camera for every image, although all
Pentax-APSC-DLSR have the same data.

AFAIK it depends on the sensor size, so why not a suggested sensor size
if the camera is not available. Eg. it is recognized that the photo was
taken with a unknown Pentax-DSLR, so dt should make a suggestion for
Pentax APS-C, which can be predefined in preferences.

Hallöchen!

For me, as a Lensfun contributor, it is important to define which
things should be solved on the Lensfun level, which on the exiv2
level, and which on the DT level.

Lensfun's DB is a proper place for aliases. Lensfun surely will
grow this feature. Whether DT makes use of that, or adds an
aliasing feature itself, is another question.

Can you elaborate on this? Besides, assumed that an alias feature
is available in Lensfun or DT, why are further steps necessary?

There is lensfun-update-data.

Tschö,
Torsten.
