The ppa in question does not provide a newer version of DT for your
specific version of Ubuntu.

When I installed / downloaded dt I saw something like "unstable"

does the install not indicate the version being installed?

latest git is: darktable-2.4.0rc0~git32.72d8dd27d
at least on openSUSE Tw

I removed the stable repo and added the unstable to my Ubuntu 16.04
Xenial machine.

It looks like it is the same version than before:

darktable 1:2.2.5-0pmjdebruijn1~xenial

That is not a valid method of requesting camera support.
You did not specify the darktable version.
