I may be wrong, but I think the display profile is still applied in the
same place in the pipeline. The setting is elsewhere in the
user-interface.

But I don't know all the internals of the implementation.

Essentially: at the end of the pipeline. The bad new is: it's after the
output profile module:

   https://redmine.darktable.org/issues/9194

(and bugs linked from there)

OK, and from the bug report I get that it's especially the monitor
profile that is applied before the histogram is shown. IIRC the output
colour profile module allowed to change display colour profile as well
in dt < 2.x, but this was corrected and in v2.x everything but the
export colour profile is set elsewhere (which makes perfect sense). But
I guess that did not affect the histogram?

* What is the colour space used for the histogram? The output colour
   space?

Yes, see above.

Hm, now I am puzzled, from the linked bug report I read that it is the
display colour profile, and I guess that the term output colour profile
translates to export colour profile since dt 2.x?!

(I don't know much more, probably others can answer more precisely)

Thanks for the information, especially the linked bug report. Even if
the choice of applying the display colour profile may be unfortunate and
may be changed in the future, I am still interested what the current
behaviour of the histogram means for my editing. I am especially
concerned about clipping of the exported images while the
preview/histogram may be OK, but I would like to understand "the whole
thing" and therefore I am still interested in more information about
this topic and especially the questions I have asked.

Thanks & best regards, Chris
