perhaps a second preset to default target?

As was pointed out, you can create a preset for the export module which will
also remember the export destination. Ideally we would want a way to reset
that to the default.

istr discussion on IRC where more variables were provided. perhaps you
can ask there. maybe variables have been provided that you can assign
values which would provide the functionality you seek.

at any rate, the most knowledgable of dt reside there but primarily EU
time.

my choice is:  $(FILE_FOLDER)/DrkTbl/$(FILE_NAME)

raw images exist in "$(FILE_FOLDER)

Thanks, I know that, perhaps I didn't explain myself clearly.
My question is relates to the fact that if I manually change to a
different export filename, whatever $(FILE_FOLDER) I then work in I
have to manually change the export  filename back to
$(FILE_FOLDER)/Darktable_export/$(FILE_NAME). There doesn't seem to be
a default that one can simply select from a menu, it all has to be
typed in char by char, everytime you change your working folder.

Cheers,

I've created a series of presets in the export module for different tasks.
All settings in this panel can be saved for later reuse. Press the
button to manage your presets.

http://www.darktable.org/usermanual/ch02s03s12.html.php
They include different size, file type and export locations, e. g. for
web use, prints, further processing e.g. in hugin etc.

That way I simply select rather than type ...
