I quote Ivanov. The behaviour of 1-key could be confusing and error prone.
An example when it fails: let's say I have multiple pictures selected.
some starred 1 and other starred 0. When I press 1 the rating is reverted :(

The colour tag works different. When multiple picture are seleted, first
key set color tag to all selected images (does not erase already selected).
Next key will erase all colour tags.

I think the best is to have coherence, and latter example (tag colour)
is what I prefer.

So... I read the manual (with a big delay) and it is clear that the dual
function of "1" is by design

https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/ch02s02s04.html.php

Would you guys consider an option in the future that would allow 1 to
only add one star but not remove it? If it is not too big of a request?

I can see that many would appreciate the behavior as it is now. It would
be nice to have such an option howeverthen users can just change the
option to fit their needs.

If nobody ever requested this and you don't think it is a good idea -
then it is ok. I will simply change my workflow. You have done a
marvelous job with the software already.

It is possible but rarely I actually use the status of zero as a valid

Do what I did. Go into the options and set the default star rating on

Not sure if that helps?

Hi Guys,

By default DT imports with with 1 star (and this works well for
me). The hot keys are - 2 (equals 2 stars) 3 (equals 3 stars) etc.

For some reason - if the picture is rated with only 1 star - when
I click 1 (typically by accident) it removes all stars. But this
only affects the ratings with 1 star. If the picture is rated 2
stars hitting 2 continuously does not make the stars disappear.
Also - hitting 1 on 2 star picture correctly sets it to 1 star.
So hitting 1 on a 1 star picture acts exactly as hitting 0

Is this by design? I often hit 1 by accident when I am aiming
either F1 or 2. Of course the picture is not gone but my view is
typically >=1. Since I typically work in a sticky zoom when
sorting pictures it is somewhat annoying. Also - the hot key in
light table are the same in dark room. Then I would normally use
Alt+1 etc to change the zoom. Again - if there is a mistake - I
have to hunt for the picture.

I would very much like to change the behavior - if I hit 1 to
just set the rating to 1 star - not to 0 stars. Both in light
table and dark room. Is it possible somehow? I did try to use
another key combination but it only affects light table (not dark
room). But the real issue boils down to hitting 1 can set the
picture to 0 stars.
