I did not expect to work with different versions (ppa vs. repository
from my distribution), just recognized during I try to get that working.
After installing the ppa version on PC, I observed the expected  behavior.

That is the problem. You simply can't take sidecar from newer version
and use it with older version. It might work in some cases, in some
cases you will be having subtle data loss, like in that case.
If you load that sidecar in older darktable, it will even warn you about that.

the databases change between versions and are not guaranteed backware
compatible.  most probably where your problem arrises.

why don't you match dt version (to the latest) between boxes and then use
*only* the library.db/data.db from one box?

ps: when describing a problem, you would help yourself by providing *all*
pertinent data, ie: op system, pgm ver, ...

Please note that in all versions the monochrome mode is enabled (this
was my criteria to observe the changes). However I do not understand,
when the database and when the XMP files will be used.

Disclaimer: Pure speculation.
If DT uses timestamps to evaluate whether a sidecar file has changed
since last run and if the two computeres involved does not have a
synchronized clock in general and more specific between the two changes
could be lost.

Dear users,

imagine the following situation: I have two computers in my LAN, call
them PC and LP. If I am working on LP, I usually mount the releated
folder structure with my photographs from PC via sshfs. Recently I was
working on my LP and switched to PC later, but I could not manage to see
the modifications on PC I previously did on LP.

I already set the core preference 'look for updated xmp files on
startup' on enabled, but neither 'reload selected XMP-files' nor
'overwrite selected XMP-files' resulted in the desired behaviour.
