Thank you for your reply. I have trimmed the minimal example to just 
reproduce the error in the debug mode and created a github issue.

Can you create a github issue with the minimal testcase that reproduces this 
error (and remove any code that would run after the call to distribute_dofs 
that triggers this)?


Once that is fixed, we can go back to the original issue and see whether that 
is fixed as well.
