URGENT ACTION APPEAL UPDATE ---------------------------------- 13 August 2004 Futher Information on UA 192/04 issued 4 June 2004 - Imminent Execution UZBEKISTAN: Azizbek Karimov (m), aged 25 Azizbek Karimov was reportedly executed in secret on 10 August, despite the fact that the United Nations Human Rights Committee had asked the authorities of Uzbekistan to stay the execution while it was considering allegations that his trial was unfair and that he was tortured and ill- treated in pre-trial detention. His mother had to be hospitalized when she suffered a heart attack on hearing the news of her son's execution. Azizbek Karimov had been sentenced to death in February 2004 on charges including ''terrorism'' and involvement in a religious extremist organization. He was reportedly beaten unconscious when he was arrested, and tortured in custody. No further action is requested from the Urgent Action network. Thank you for sending appeals.
