Re: Bug#706548: gnome-orca: No speech in login screen

2013-05-01 Thread Jann Schneider
Hi,

When i use Strg + Alt + Tab in the login screen there is only "panel
frame" on the braille display. When i press tab or arrow keys there
nothing happens. Looks like there is no chance to enable speech using
only the braille device.

Hi,

When i tab around at the login screen i can only find the buttons for
login / cancel, a combo to choose system default / gnome / gnome
classic and an entry for my user. Should there be an accessibility
menu, too? Or do you mean the one when i'm logged in? In this menu
after login i've ticket screenreader..

So maybe this is more an improovement than a bug: would be nice to
have also speech if braille is enabled in the login screen. I assume
the braille output is generated by orca?

And, there's the problem. You need accessibility in order to enable
accessibility on GDM greeter. You may need a helper to do this, once,
for you, after install. If you are the only user, I suppose you can
enable automatic login? Can this be done in the installer, as in live
systems?

Although, I am not sure against which package that should be. As Samuel
already mentioned on this list: don't forget to put this list on CC

usb plug and play does not work with versions of installer which include firmware

2013-05-01 Thread Doug Smith

This is one I thought needed to be filed away for work in future versions of
the installer. I do not know how to file one of those fancy bug reports
that include all that information like apt prefers and all that, but I did two
installs on different machines and had the same problem.

What happens is this. On some machines, including the one I have here trying
to get to work for a friend, the networking hardware requires some
non-free firmware to work. Well, I get that version of the network installer
and do the work.

The install goes flawlessly, but, when the machine is rebooted, the usb
detection does not work. If I put in a usb device before starting the
machine, the install of the usb device is detected on machine startup and it
works as expected. If I put in a flash drive or external hard drive, for
instance, after the system is running, there is no detection, and no access to
the usb flash drive or hard disk even though it is being powered.

This is only in the version of the installer that has the non-free firmware
components in it. The stock one I installed on here works like a dream.
The only other solution I can see to this is to download the dvd installation
set and attempt to install with those.

Hope this helps.

Forwarding generated bug reports to this list

2013-05-01 Thread Jann Schneider
Hi all,

I've created two bug reports this afternoon and thought they would be
send to this list as CC. I called:
  $ reportbug --list-cc=debian-accessibility@lists.debian.org
After creating the report and sending it the program said "A copy of
this report will be send to debian-accessibility@lists.debian.org..."
But i didn't see these messages here in the list.
Didn't i get them because i've reported the issues or didn't they get
to the list at all?

Rather through bugs getting introduced and fixed. That's why we make
calls for testing, so that they get tracked and fixed.

In the case at stake, there is a simple workaround: patching the
downloaded image:

sed -i -e "s/installer boot menu/installer boot"$'\a'"menu/"
debian-wheezy-DI-amd64-netinst.iso

can't you enable speech in orca's preferences?

The issue was found and fixed, but that won't be in 7.0.0, only in
7.0.1. Had the issue been reported even just a couple of days before
(the bug is there since alpha1 in July 2012!), it would have been in
time for 7.0.0...

Bug#706544: gnome-orca: No more braille output after restarting orca

2013-05-01 Thread Jann Schneider
Package: gnome-orca
Version: 3.4.2-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

When i run orca for the first time - after login - speech and braille both work
fine. After restarting orca i have no more braille output anymore.
I quitted orca by pressing Insert + Q and restarted it by pressing Alt + F2,
typing in orca and pressing enter.

NOTE: speech works fine as before, only braille support is affected.

Nobody is removing it. Please don't assume that somebody is against you,
it's simply untrue.

That being said it is enabled only for official releases, to avoid
bothering the ears of people who e.g. debug the installer all day long.
It should have been enabled for RC2, it's not normal that it isn't
enabled, I'll have to check, but that'll most probably not be fixed for
wheezy 7.0.0, and have to wait for wheezy 7.0.1.

It does not provide services for refreshable braille display. It only
changes the colors in the interface, and makes the fonts bigger in
graphical mode.

Re: webBrowser for debian

Hello Eric

Hello,
Iceweasel works just fine under Debian. What version are you using? As for
your question about Chrome, it can be made accessible. However, this
requires installing the non-open-source version, called Chrome. This
however is not a perfect solution, as their are still a11y issues. The
a11y extention is installed with the Chrome Web Application Store, which
is not accessible before you install the extention. So, you will need some
sighted assistance to get the extention up and running. However, on
subsequent installs of Chrome will not require this. This is because your
preferences are maintained in your Google account profile. So, once you
sync your browser to other machines, the a11y bits will be downloaded to
that machine and installed.

the version of iceweasel is 18.1 it seems. i'm a linux user, coming from
windows.. maybe i haven't got used to browsing with linux? for example,
when i want to write in google search, the voice (echo keys) lags.
or when i try to aero up/down within a website, i feel... an
unresponsiveness.. it's hard to explain.
Another problem that i have is that the sentenses are cut in some pages
for some reason.
for example, i have to aero down sevral times to read a complete
sentense. (two or three words in a line). don't think i could get google
chrome working then. have no sighted assisstence for now.

In later versions of Firefox (AKA Iceweasel), the support is far better.
Have a
look at mozilla.com and download a targz-file for Linux. Unpack it to
your home

and use this one instead of Iceweasel.

Do you mean that i should install the firefox itself? is it possible? i
thought iceweasel and firefox are the same.

is the installation hard? i have little experience with commandline.

Thanks guys for helping.

Exactly, it's a flash drive.
No beep, not easy to know when it's doing anything...
Why does the beep come and go with different revisions?
Tell someone to stop removing it!

There was no beep when I installed rc2 either, just wait until the disk
stops spinning and hit s and enter and you should be good to go. The
beep comes and goes through versioning changes.

This doesn't help, unfortunately, if the USB drive referred to turns out to be
a flash memory device, which obviously doesn't spin.

If the UEFI or BIOS in the machine doesn't beep, it's even worse.

There is a real need for accessibility at the firmware level. Most systems
lack support for IPMI or serial console.

All I did was to use wodim to burn the iso. When I got a usable dvd in
the drive everything worked the first time. You may have run into a
bunch of Chinese Specials in terms of DVD's, these look like they'll
work but bomb out and turn into coasters.
