This is well documented at:

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/core.html#include

Make sure that an included directory does not contain any stray files,
such as editor temporary files, for example, as Apache will attempt to
read them in and use the contents as configuration directives, which may
cause the server to fail on start up. Running apachectl configtest will
give you a list of the files that are being processed during the
configuration check:

as well duplicate of 135717.

That a good point - dpkg/apt etc will be dropping conffiles into
/etc/apache/conf.d and -dpkg- files may be left behind due to this.

Bug#233538: apache: dotfiles not skipped, scanning /etc/apache/conf.d

2004-02-18 Thread Matthias Urlichs
Hi,

Make sure that an included directory does not contain any stray files,
such as editor temporary files, for example,

That may be documented, but it's not the way directory scanning code in
Debian is expected to work. Besides, it's fragile.

Would you accept a patch?

NB: Sorry about the duplicate bug.

Bug#232954: Another variation

There are two obvious differences between these machines:
 1. This one had apache v 1 installed previously, and though I have
removed its files I have not purged them. In particular, they remain
 under /var/www.
 2. This one has mpm-worker; the other had mpm-perchild. However, both
seem to be running as www-data and using /var/www/ for their root
 location to display.

In short, I think item 1 is the problem.
Just to confirm this, I'm back on the original machine and installed
mpm-worker in place of mpm-perchild. It's behavior is unchanged.
