 uhm, why?

Aren't there already packages which are producing debs and udebs at
the same time ?

If so, they probably want UTF-8 and non-utf-8 versions of templates,
and since non-utf-8 templates predate utf-8 templates (which probably do not
exist yet), for compatibility, including utf-8 templates in source are bad.

At what point did this occur? Are you saying that dbootstrap crashes
immediately on startup, or is it provoked by some particular action?

acorn-fdisk does not work, producing a segmentation fault, with the
 following:

Likewise here.

Having traced through, the faults seem to be comming from shared library
 problems

It would be helpful if you could explain your findings, to save others
from duplicating the effort.

Request for Assistance!

2002-08-20 Thread George Frederick.

George Frederick,
Banque Internationale Afrique,
Lome,Togo.

I am George Frederick, the director in charge of auditing and
accounting section of Banque internationale De l'Afrique(BIA) Togo-Lome West Africa.

With due respect and regard. I have decided to contact you on a business transaction
that will be very beneficial to both of us at the end of the transaction .
During our investigation and auditing (year ending 2001) in this bank, my department
came across a very huge sum of money belonging to a deceased person who died on
October 31st 1999 in a plane crash and the fund has been dormant in his account with
this Bank without any
claim of the fund in our custody either from his family or relation before our
discovery to this development.

The said amount was U.S $3.2M(Three million two hundred Thousand United States
dollars). Meanwhile all the whole arrangement to put claim over this fund as the
bonafide next of kin to the deceased, get the required approval and transfer of this
money to a foreign account
has been put in place and the directives and needed information will be relayed to you
as soon as you indicate your interest and willingness to assist us and also benefit
your self to this great business opportunity.

In fact I could have done this deal alone but because of my position in this country
as a civil servant(A Banker),we are not allowed to operate a foreign account.moreover,
this may eventually raise an eye
brow on my side during the time of transfer because I work in this bank. This is the
actual reason why it will require a second party or fellow who will forward claims as
the next of kin with affidavit of trust of oath to the Bank and also present a foreign
account where
he will need the money to be re-transferred into on his request as it may be after due
verification and clarification by the correspondent branch of the bank where the whole
money will be remitted from to your own designation bank account.

I will not fail to inform you that this transaction is 100% risk free. On smooth
conclusion of this transaction, you will be entitled to 25% of the total sum as
gratification, while 5% will be set aside
to take care of expenses that may arise during the time of transfer and also telephone
bills, while 70% will be for me and my partners.

Please, you are adviced to keep top secret as I am still in service and i intend to
retire from service after we conclude this deal with you. I will be monitoring the
whole situation here in this bank until you confirm the money in your account and ask
me to come down to your country for subsequent sharing of the fund according to
percentages
previously indicated and further investment, either in your country or any country you
advice us to invest in. All other necessary vital information will be sent to you when
I hear from you.

I look forward to receive your mail or your telephone call.

Yours faithfully,
George Frederick.

Bug#157410: boot-floppies: [sparc] cannot create /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe: directory nonexistent

2002-08-20 Thread Andrew Stribblehill

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2002-08-20
Severity: minor

A message at the top of my ncurses interface says:

cannot create /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe: directory nonexistent

I'm afraid I can't remember when the message was put there, but it
may have been at the module selection phase.

This is merely cosmetic but it's important to get boot-floppies
cosmetics right since that's all journalists see when testing a
new distribution :(

Thanks,

Hi Erik,

I am trying to install Debian Woody on my laptop and
coming across the same problem you reported back in
June (bug#149133). Reading the related correspondence
you say you downloaded and compiled a 2.2.20 kernel
w/o serial port and installed it on a new rescue
disk and installed successfully a new Debian on your
laptop.

Could you please explain how did you create the new
rescue disk or alternatively send us a copy?

Any help you could provide would be really
appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance

segfaults with base install

2002-08-20 Thread Adam Henry

Greetings,

First off, I sincerely apologize if this is already covered in a thread--I
haven't been around here long enough but nothing came up in an archive
search. In summary, my problem is with two of the minimal cd installers,
as well as the full jigdo 3.0 images. I'm a little stubborn in that
I don't want to use the floppies just yet. I would rather help out to
get this optical process working flawlessly, and offer my trials here as
debugging wisdom. Not that any of it is really wise, I would appreciate
any help to give more precise useful information in the future. Sorry,
here are the details:

# SYSTEM SPECS:
# /proc/pci
Host bridge: Intel 82439TX
ISA birdge: Intel 82371AB PIIX4 ISA
IDE interface: Intel 82371AB PIIX4
USB Controller: Intel 82371AB PIIX4 USB; IRQ:12
Bridge: Intel 82371AB PIIX4 ACPI
Ethernet controller: Intel 82557; IRQ:10
VGA compat controller: S3 Inc. ViRGE; IRQ:11

# /proc/cpu
Pentium MMX
stepping: 2
MHz: 233.866
f00f_bug: yes
flags: fpu vme de pse tsc msr mce cx8 mmx

# /proc/interrupts
0: timer
1: keyboard
2: cascade
10: eth0
13: fpu
14: ide0
15: ide1

# /proc/dma
4: cascade

It is my intention to later run the system from a ramdisk loaded by cdrom,
so I am without disk swap. My hda is partitioned at 650_MB.

For each of these images downloaded, I verified the md5sum after download
but before burning, and after burning them I used dd to extract the
image and re-verify it.

The problems first turned up when installing the base system over
the network. Using different mirrors, here is a list of the different
errors I have received so far:

# From the alt-f4 vt: Segmentation fault[most frequent
error]

sh: relocation error: sh: symbol @up2, version GLIBC_2.0 not
defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference

/usr/sbin/debootstrap: /usr/lib/deboo$st'p: not found

I know, not very specific. I tested various mirrors to make sure the
source of the problem wasn't the network itself, but ultimately tried
again using Jidgo. Using the image created by jigdo, here is what I
see on vt4 when beginning to do the base install:

Segmentation Fault
md5sum: -: Is a directory
rm: /target: is a directory
md5sum: -: Is a directory

At the same time this happens, here is the corresponding error on vt1:

file:/instmnt/pool/main/g/glibc/libc6_2.2.5-6_i386.deb was corrupt

And vt2:

(none) user.err dbootstrap[76]:
file:/instmnt/pool/main/g/glibc/libc6_2.2.5-6_i386.deb was corrupt

I used Memtest to verify the RAM, and Spinrite to verify the disk drive.
I have 254_MB of RAM, and the hard drive is a Seagate Medalist 8420 8_GB
(Ontrack is running...).

My next test is to replace the hard disk, but I don't yet have one
readily available.

I hope this information is useful--I would love to get Linux working
on this computer. Please let me know if there is more information I
can provide.

best wishes,
hank

This same error has been reported previously,
http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2002/debian-boot-200208/msg00279.html

From the error messages you saw, it really looks like an obscure
debootstrap bug, or more likely a corrupted build of debootstrap
within boot-floppies.

One possibility to cause more detailed error messages to appear would
be to add 'debug verbose' to your boot arguments when booting the
installer. I'm not sure if debootstrap listens to that, but quite
possibly.

Then, copy this report to a bug on debootstrap.

Kernel patch is nice but we do not know when they get implemented.

Additional fall back data will be nice to have.

Any thoughts?
