tftpboot and install over net
Hi I tried to install debian 3.0 over ethernet per tftpd and dhcp. I setup all (dhcp, tftpd ) according to the manual. During the boot over the ethernet network card ( PXE and dhcp, bootp) i get the error message file is too big to fit in free base memory while loading the file tftpboot.img. Any help? I downloaded Sarge but i can't install booting from CD and i can't install it upgrading on Potato. It says: Internal Error, couldn't configure a pre-depend. Plese help me, because i don't know i must to do. Reards Claudio

As it runs happily on your box, it might not be a general problem (as someone suggested when I first asked for help on Compuserve). So for the time being I will leave the problem pending as it is, for all I still have to do is create my own kernel and then I won't have to change any boot sectors for a long time. After instaling syslinux on the tftp server and after configuring pxelinux (which is part of syslinux I had the pleasure to see the the ethernet card running pxelinux and then begin to try to download a kernel. [Martin Sjögren] I've been thinking the same thing. However, the i18n support is pretty hazy as it is: * main-menu asks debconf for debian-installer/language which afaict doesn't exist. IMO it would be better if the thing that asked for debian-installer/language first, sets LANG=$language after that, so setlocale can be used. I would like to rename the debconf answer from debian-installer/language to debian-installer/locale, and store a real locale name (ll_CC) there. This way, we can actually use LANG=$locale after generating the required locale data file. We can also pass the content in /target/root/dbootstrap_settings as LANG_INST=$locale to tell base-config which language to use. I would also like to add support for the LANGUAGE style variable listing several languages in priority order to be able to use other translations if the primary translation is missing. I want it to be able to tell the system to use Norwegian Bokmål if present, and if it isn't use Norwegian Nynorsk, Danish and as a last resort Swedish. If a template lacks that, debconf uses its old, slightly broken behavior of doing no charset conversion. * Since we have a transition period coming up anyway as packages begin to move to po-debconf, and since po-debconf's template po files will include encoding info, add onto this transition that po-debnconf generated template files will be in utf-8. * Which will mean that po-debconf will either need to fail if all the po files are not in the utf-encoding, or, better, if they are not in utf-8, convert their info into that encoding when it generates the merged templates file (debian/templates itself can be assumed to be ASCII, and thus will need no conversion). And po-debconf will add the Encoding: utf-8 flag to the merged templates file it generates. One concern is that I've heard that UTF-8 is really not all there for Japanese (Chinese?). I'm told that doing a round-trip conversion from Shift-JIS to UTF-8 has issues. I don't know if translators can just avoid those problem encodnings and write ja.po files that are already in UTF-8. I'm aware of the problems described at http://www.debian.or.jp/~kubota/unicode-symbols.html but they all only seem to be related to the slightly varying vendor tables, and not a problem when iconv is used consistently.
