Frans,
thanks for pulling this together and posting the message.

I tested the 2006.03.07 image for HPPA on my B2600:
-rw-r--r-- 1 grundler grundler 126896128 Mar 7 23:54

The install had some nits and a major bug:
o initramfs package failed to install. Retrying got past that.
o kernel package installed failed on the second try. Retrying got past that.
o I went into the shell to snoop, noted that /sys and /proc
was mounted 3 times. I was looking in /proc, not mount output.
Makes sense if it doesn't get cleaned up after a failure.

After the install reported success and rebooted,
the system did not reboot:

As much as I know from Matthew skills, he's probably able to easily
create the udeb by himself, except if the problem is missing time for
doing the work. In such case, we can probably provide a ready to use

Bug#306476: quick question about Bug#306476

2006-03-10 Thread Frans Pop
On Monday 27 February 2006 04:21, Randall Wayth wrote:
To get to this point, I had also tried the latest etch cd installer
which uses a 2.6 kernel. This installer failed at other points (I had
to modprobe esp and it couldn't mount the disk after partitioning, and
something else too...) but what was useful was that it told me that the
module for the scsi controller was called esp. Since this is an sbus
system, not pci, there doesn't appear to be an equivalent of lspci
which would have solved my problem immediately. (If there is such a
 thing, please let me know.)

There is actually. Recent sparc images include 'prtconf' and use that to
detect sbus devices.

So all's well that ends well. If you think that the failure to load the
correct scsi driver modules during the detect cdrom phase is a bug,
then I'll be happy to submit one.

No need to open a new bug, just keep following up to this one.

Could you please try an install using the latest daily image [1], which is
the candidate for the installer's Beta2 release. See if the CDROM is
detected and the esp driver is loaded automatically.

If it does not work, could you send us the output of prtconf?

You can also try to add a line 'set -x' in /bin/discover-sbus before
hardware detection [2]. That should give you debugging output in
/var/log/syslog that shows what's happening.

You can stop before partitioning, so no need to overwrite your exiting
installation for this test.

TIA,
Frans Pop

[2] Boot the installer with 'install debconf/priority=medium' and, before
the step to detect cdrom hardware, switch to VT2 and edit that script
using nano.

I think it would be nice to have correct font stripping in it straight
away: i.e. only the range needed for Georgian.

AFAICT, that would be the range from 10A0-10FF [1].
For now, I'd propose to include the full range.

It would be good though to check at some point what actual glyphs are used
in Georgian translations (outside of Latin ranges). It may be good to
allow some extra glyphs in from the specific font for visual consistency.

Preseeded automatic installation fails to install a kernel.

A small, relevent excerpt of my preseed values:

d-i debconf/prioritystring critical
d-i debian-installer/kernel/image string kernel-image-2.6-686

During base system installation the installer fails with a 'no initrd
generator' error.

The same installation, using the same preseed information except with
debconf/priority set to medium, results in a successful installation.

Clueless user ponderings: After manual installation succeeded and the target
rebooted, I checked for a /var/log/debian-installer/debconf-seed file, thinking
that perhaps there is an additional preseed value that the etch version of the
installer needs to specify an initrd generator, but there was no such file
present on the system. Maybe there is another way to attain preseed values
after a manual installation and I just don't what it is.

We see this more often. It is something to look into.

 * The installer hanged during partitioning, with the following error
   message in the kernel log:
 ata1: command 0x55 timeout, stat 0x50 host_stat 0x4
This no longer happened after I booted with the noapic nolapic
   options.

Sounds like a kernel issue. You may want to google to check if this is a
known issue and, if not, report it to with the maintainers of the kernel
driver for your disk controller.

 * base-files and base-passwd failed to install because a missing tar. I
copied busybox to /target/bin/tar and was able to restart that step
   and continue.

This has been checked and should be fixed with current CD images:

OK. So this is with the new installer. Let's close your previous report.

So now, please provide the information I asked for: the relevant section
of the /var/log/syslog file (of if you like, the full file, gzipped).

A small, relevent excerpt of my preseed values:

During base system installation the installer fails with a 'no initrd

The same installation, using the same preseed information except with

Which netinstall? We have about 50 variations of them...
Please include the _full_ URL of the image you downloaded.

If you used the official Sarge version of the installer, the reason is
probably that the Sarge kernel does not support your NIC. In that case,
please try the Etch version of the installer [1] which has a lot newer
kernel.

Following your FAQ I send your the output of lspci -v (lspci-v.out file

Thanks for that info, but we need some other info as well, so please fill
out a full installation report [2] (after you've tried the Etch version
of the installer (and please include the lspci info again).

Cheers,

the dependency resolution problems that currently prevent the graphical
installer from being integrated into the main d-i infrastructure.

Due to excellent responses from some maintainers, some have even already
been fixed. Note that bugs for some libs can only be filed after new
versions of the libraries they depend on are in the archive.

The packages providing libs that are part of d-i itself have already been
patched by Joey and so only need an upload when we're ready for them.

Here's an overview:
- #355293: zlib1g (uploaded)
- #355937: expat
- #355939: freetype
- #355963: slang2 (uploaded)
- #355965: sysfsutils (uploaded)
- #356252: libpng
- #356260: fribidi
- #356293: e2fsprogs
- partman (patch prepared but waits for e2fsprogs)

To do:
- wireless-tools (libiw28-udeb)
- devmapper (libdevmapper1.02-udeb)
- openssh (libcrypto0.9.8-udeb)
- atk1.0 (libatk1.0-udeb)
- libusb (libusb-0.1-udeb)
- progsreiserfs (libreiserfs0.3-udeb)

And of course the higher libs used by g-i:
- libdirectfb-0.9-22-udeb
- fontconfig-udeb
- libcairo2-directfb-udeb
- libgtk+2.0-directfb0-udeb

These last will probably be the the most difficult and they all depend on
other being fixed first. So, getting there, but a way to go yet.

Cheers,
FJP

  OK, will work on it...

I think it would be nice to have correct font stripping in it straight
away: i.e. only the range needed for Georgian.

AFAICT, that would be the range from 10A0-10FF [1].
For now, I'd propose to include the full range.

Already done (see r35369)

It would be good though to check at some point what actual glyphs are used
in Georgian translations (outside of Latin ranges). It may be good to
allow some extra glyphs in from the specific font for visual consistency.

Debian HW RAID almost working. Fsck failure on reboot.

2006-03-10 Thread Alex Loffler

Hi All,

I seem to be experiencing a similar problem - after a clean install of
sarge with a 2.6 kernel.

When I reboot the system I get a fsck.ext3 error trying to check /dev/sda1

fsck.ext3: No such device or address while trying to open /dev/sda1
Possible non-existent or swap device?

fsck failed. Please repair manually.

CONTROL-D will exit from this shell.

If I hit control-D and continue I can then mount -a and all is well (the
partition mounts normally)
If I change /etc/fstab so the pass param is changed from a 2 to a 0
for sda1, again the system boots and mounts the drive normally (albeit
without a fsck).
Finally doing a fsck /dev/sda1 on the unmounted drive returns instantly
with a clean, so I think the drive is fine.

Could this be a timing/order issue as the SCSI device seems to be
detected quite a bit later in the logs.

Thanks again for a wonderful job!

Alex.
