Unbranding a message in lilo-installer (was: Re: D-I msgstr caught my eye)

2006-06-21 Thread Christian Perrier
(CC -boot)

Quoting Siim Põder ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):

(Siim is our Estonian translator)

 Hi

I notice that a lot of strings in D-I have been made fuzzy and mostly
just have the word Debian removed from them (for ubuntu
compatiblity?): your new Debian system - your new system.

Yes, this is a process called unbranding which should minimize the
number of strings that derivative distributions have to unbrand when
merging with Debian. Of course, Ubuntu is certainly the most widely
known among derivatives (but one may think also about Debian-Edu).

Anyways, this one string still has Debian in the latter part of it:

The LILO program needs to be installed to make your new system
bootable. By installing it onto your disk's Master Boot Record, LILO
will take complete control of the boot process, but if you want to use a
different boot manager, just install LILO on the new Debian partition
 instead.

Is this on purpose or a bug?

I would say this is a bug. In that case, I see no good reason to keep
branding.

I hereby propose removing Debian as the sentence perfectly stands
without it.

Re: Scary message on new installations

Note that Joey Hess filed this as http://bugs.debian.org/372077 a while
back. We are currently considering upgrading that to RC as we feel we
cannot release D-I Beta3 wile this note is still being displayed for new
 installations.

 A reaction would be appreciated.

David indeed reacted to a very similar message I posted (see below for
my message and answers).

My understanding is that David doesn't actually know how to handle
this properly to be sure about warning when users upgrade (which seems
important).

I agree that this should be RC in D-I point of view. We certainly
cannot ship with that message displayed on every default install.

(personal note: too bad that I'm actually too busy at work and home to
meet David who's currently in Paris.:-|)

Subject: Annoying warning note in fresh installs

I was today testing the fresh install of Etch with the desktop task
(D-I related work) and I have been very surprised to see the warning
note about possible problems during the major upgrade.

I seem to remember reading Steve Langasek (this was actually Joey
Hess) mentioning this, but this is something that definitely should go
away, at least on fresh installs..:-)

David Nusinow's answer:

Right, I don't like it but I don't have a clean fix for it yet. The reason
being that x11-common didn't exist in sarge so I can't simply check for an
upgrade. Ideally I would look for xserver-common being on the system and
put the note up in that case, but that package should be removed prior to
x11-common's preinst being run due to the conflicts line. Maybe just
checking for libx11 would get around it.

Alternately, I think joeyh suggested looking for a running X server for the
fix (that may be for a different bug though) but I don't think that's an
optimal solution for this problem. Fundamentally, I need to check to see
exactly what's in the sarge X packages to find out what we could look for.

Joey Hess contribution later:

If you don't mind depending on people upgrading with apt (rather than
using dpkg directly), you could do the check in the config script, which
will run before anything is removed in a dist-upgrade.

Severity: serious

When debconf-copydb is run from pkgsel's postinst script, it deletes the
existing /var/cache/debconf/templates.dat in /target; after it has run
only copied templates are present.

This results in the problem that has been reported that tasksel is not
translated. Commenting out the debconf-copydb statement solves this
problem.

In lowmem level 2, anna presents a list of udebs, which does not include
partman-ext3. And partman-ext3 is not loaded at all, though the kernel
udeb with the ext3 module is. This leaves partman only able to do ext2
by default. Reiserfs and other filesystems can be selected in anna.

Package: debian-installer
Severity: grave

Hello,

I downloaded the netinst daily-built image at [1] because I needed a
rescue CD and tried the 'rescuegui' boot target: while it loads
without any problem, as soon as I touch the touchpad of my IBM T42p
[2], the pointer disappeares. The same happens with the 'installgui'
boot target. Checking the logs in the first console doesn't show any
error (and the Synaptics TouchPad is correctly recognized [3]).

Some points:

- this happens only with the touchpad, not with the IBM TrackPad

- pressing the touchpad buttons seem to leave the pointer in its place

- the same burned image works as expected into qemu (I mean, the
  pointer doesn't disappear).

The severity is grave because we've two problems here:

1) the pointer disappearing

2) the fact that in the country selection window, the country submenu
cannot be opened without the mouse. I mean, I chose English as
language and then I tried to press return on Europe, but this
triggers the Continue button pressed action. And this ends in a
loop. I think that even in the graphical installer, the user
should be able to use the keyboard instead of the mouse ;-)

I'm here to test any possible solution :-D

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Hi,

When the gtk frontend asks yes/no debconf questions, it uses a checkbox
that the user has to check. This gives a strange result, for instance

Write the changes to disks?

[ ] Write the changes to disks?

A simple correction for now could be to just not repeat the question:

Write the changes to disks?

[ ] Yes.

Regards,
Samuel

[MEETINGS] REMINDER D-I team meeting Saturday June 24th 16:00UTC

2006-06-21 Thread Christian Perrier
This is a reminder:

The next Debian Installer team opened meeting is scheduled for
Saturday June 24th 16:00 UTC.

The meeting will happen on #debian-boot ON irc.debian.org, NOT, I
REPEAT, NOT on irc.freenode.net.

This meeting will mostly be centered about the next release schedule,
with regards of the general Etch release plans.

The Wiki page is opened for the meeting agenda.

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Meetings

I will add timings to the agenda at the last minute, as usual, so
probably on Saturday morning. Expect a meeting duration of about
1h30.

RFC: partman-auto-crypto

2006-06-21 Thread David Härdeman

Hi all,

I've been working on partman-auto-crypto in the d-i SVN repo at
/people/alphix-guest/partman-auto-crypto.

It's now at a point where it seems reasonable to move it into the
regular tree (/d-i/packages/partman/partman-auto-crypto).

partman-auto-lvm currently sets up a boot partition, a swap partition
and a LVM PV used by one LVM VG which holds LV's for the rest of the
partitions (root and possibly home depending on the selected recipe).

partman-auto-crypto uses the functionality of partman-auto-lvm and
partman-crypto to setup a boot partition and one LUKS encrypted partition
which in turn holds a LVM PV with one LVM VG which contains the swap
partition and the rest of the partitions (root and possibly home).

With the combination of initramfs-tools and cryptsetup, a
initramfs-image is generated in the boot partition which prompts for the
password during boot and then sets up the LVM VG and proceeds with the
boot. I am not sure whether this also works with yaird.

Most of the code is shared with partman-auto-lvm, with the change that
the encrypted partition is setup in between and that the swap partition
is marked for inclusion in the LVM VG.

It is currently at the stage where it works for me (famous last words),
so I'd like to get some review and feedback before moving the package
into the main tree (especially as I've never written a debian package
from scratch yet).

There are currently two items on the todo list:

o Examine whether we should move the swap partition into the LVM VG for
partman-auto-lvm as well, this would allow for much more code sharing
 between partman-auto-lvm and partman-auto-crypto. I'll send a separate
email asking for comments on this issue soon.

o Support loop-AES as well as dm-crypt (this mostly depends on
 partman-crypto getting encrypted-root-via-loop-AES support)

None of these items seem to be a reason to postpone the use of
partman-auto-crypto, and code sharing is hard to implement before both
packages are in the source tree proper.

The package itself is pretty small, except for the packaging stuff in
debian/*, there's only three files (and at least one -
perform_recipe_by_crypto could be eliminated in the future if swap on
lvm becomes the default in partman-auto-lvm).

So, I'd be happy to have some review, questions and comments on the code :)

Regards,
David

Bug#374874: Segmentation fault while printing partition list

2006-06-21 Thread Steffen Joeris
Package: autopartkit
Severity: grave

Hi

The second problem with autopartkit raises up when it tries to
call the print_list() function. As far as I can see it goes into the
if-clause and then gets a segmentation fault.
I need to do some further debugging to provide a patch, but I wanted
to report this bug first. Maybe something is not defined there.
I try to give some more information tomorrow.

Greetings
Steffen

Bug#361872: debconf-copydb: Trashes debconf database in /target

 On Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 08:57:02PM +0200, Steinar H. Gunderson wrote:
After some discussion on IRC, here's the updated patch.

One change is needed yet; the current code in debconf-copydb simply turns off
i18n support (since the old code couldn't handle that properly, it seems, or
perhaps it's even older). Just nuke the setenv() line from debconf-copydb.c
 and we should be okay.

BTW, Joey: There _are_ lots of non-UTF-8 strings out there, it seems -- it's
unfortunate, but we can't nuke the support from debconf just yet. :-/

In case this is of interest for someone, here are some figure:
  * There are 7 packages in unstable with Field-xx translated fields
(i.e. without encoding):
  pool/main/a/amavis-ng/amavis-ng_0.1.6.9-1_all.deb
  pool/main/b/bottlerocket/bottlerocket_0.05b3-6.1_i386.deb
  pool/main/c/chdrv/chdrv_1.0.13p-2_i386.deb
  pool/main/f/filterproxy/filterproxy_0.30-6_all.deb
  pool/main/i/ifupdown/ifupdown_0.6.7_i386.deb
  pool/main/n/ndtpd/ndtpd_3.1.5-6.3_i386.deb
  pool/main/x/x-symbol/x-symbol_4.43-5_all.deb
  * There are 107 (180 in main + 5 in contrib + 2 in non-free) packages
in unstable with non UTF-8 (and non utf-8 :)) Field-xx.encoding
translated fields. Note that many packages need more than a simple
rebuild because they implemented the hack described in
  http://lists.debian.org/debian-i18n/2003/07/msg00026.html
to ease woody portability.
  * There is no package with Field-xx.utf8 translated field, so the
applied fix looks safe.
IIRC cdebconf does only support UTF-8 on output too, so it cannot
replace debconf when run under a non UTF-8 locale.

Comments/Problems:

I installed unstable. There was no error in first stage. grub-installer
found my old Debian system (it was listed as Debian GNU/Linux ). It did
not found QNX, but I do not think that it is a problem.

After reboot grub appeared with following menu:
Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.4.26-1-686
Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.4.26-1-686 (recovery mode)
QNX Momentix (on /dev/hda6)

There was no other Debian GNU/Linux listed in menu and /dev/hda6 device
is really root partition of old Debian system. That not only problem.
Commands for loading QNX Momentix...:

root(hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.3 ro root=/dev/hda6
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.4.26-1-686
savedefault
boot

Kernel 2.6.3 was not default in old system. I am not sure that
this kernel will boot with that initrd ;-)
My old grub.conf attached.

Booted new Debian system. During boot some program detected that
I have nvidia card and loaded framebuffer module. After that I had
3 cursors instead of one :-) (one big graphical cursor, and too small
cursors on top of sreen with blue line). I do not think that
loading framebuffer module is really necessery.

During passwd configuration I was asked about my full name. I entered
my name in Ukrainian. After that passwd suggested me my first name
as default value for login - will it work? :-)

Sorry for responding so late to this report.
Unfortunately your original report is missing some important information
needed to investigate this issue, like what the old bootloader was on
your system and what the contents of the old configuration file
(lilo.conf or grub's menu.lst) were.

As I'd guess you probably no longer have that info, I'm closing your
report. If you still do have the old bootloader configuration, please
send that by replying to this mail and we'll reopen the bug report.

We have made some corrections in the installer in the mean time and some
more fixes will be uploaded very soon, so it is also possible that your
problem is already fixed.

Thank you for sending your report.

[g-i] new screenshots available

Dejavu 2.7 has made it into unstable and things are happening on the

It would be interesting to have some feedback from native speakers; I'd be

David indeed reacted to a very similar message I posted (see below for
 my message and answers).

My understanding is that David doesn't actually know how to handle
this properly to be sure about warning when users upgrade (which seems
 important).

I agree that this should be RC in D-I point of view. We certainly
cannot ship with that message displayed on every default install.

Since this warning note has been added specifically because the xserver is
being removed in situations we don't want it to, and the removal is being
caused by a new package that didn't exist in sarge, it is indeed very
difficult to detect the difference between an upgrade and a new install.

For d-i's purposes, preseeding this d-i note into oblivion is an option, but
it would be much nicer if someone could figure out how to keep the xserver
from being removed on upgrade in the first place.

I just tried the June 19th jigdo DVD. Same problem.

I was able to save the syslog file from the install by going to the

Most likely it is displayed incorrectly due to bug in some package that

Re: [g-i] new screenshots available

2006-06-21 Thread Leang Chumsoben
Hello,

 It would be interesting to have some feedback from native speakers;
it looks pretty good for Khmer.

Cheers,
Soben

RE: new screenshots available

2006-06-21 Thread Sunjae Park

For Korean it looks just about perfect:-)

2006/6/22, Davide Viti [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Dejavu 2.7 has made it into unstable and things are happening on the
font side. I just created a new set of screenshots in [1]; everything
is pretty much the best we can do atm, apart from Arabic / Farsi (see
#374720)
It would be interesting to have some feedback from native speakers; I'd be
particularly interested to know how is Vietnamese displayed using Dejavu
(we don't use freefont anylonger to display it) and how non-latin languages
look like.
I noticed that using experimental g-i images based on latest
libraries, everything looks more consistent, that's why I don't think
it's the right time to spend time on fixing fonts file: I think I'll give
a go at font hacking once new libraries will be available.

regards,
Davide
