Bug#379835: Severity of not being being able to resize NTFS

2006-08-14 Thread Geert Stappers
Hello,

At this moment has this bug severity 'grave'.
That means that not being able to resize NTFS partitions (that start at
an odd sector) is blocking the release.

Is it really a release blocker?

Cheers

Bug#321109: [PATCH] grub-installer password confirmation, debian #321109

2006-08-14 Thread Julian Graham

Please find attached a revised patch that includes the changes to the
template text.

On 8/14/06, Christian Perrier [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Oops, forgot the patch itself.

I have some comments about the wording:

 +Template: grub-installer/password-again
 +Type: password
 +_Description: Re-enter GRUB password:
+ Please enter the same GRUB password again to verify you have typed it
 + correctly.

I suggest, by analogy to user-setup:

_Description: Re-enter GRUB password to verify:
Please enter the same GRUB password again to verify you have typed it
 correctly.

(BTW, we should fix nextwork-console so that the very similar password
confirmation prompt is worded similarly)

 +
 +Template: grub-installer/password-mismatch
 +Type: note
 +_Description: Password mismatch
+ The two passwords you entered were not the same. Please enter a password
 + again.
 +

That's perfect as this is exactly the same wording than
user-setup...which means no more translation work to do..:-)

Mmm, you may try to 'cancel', 'go back' and UNcheck desktop. (I fear that

If you restart for the begining, then install also with the desktop

Bug#321109: [PATCH] grub-installer password confirmation, debian #321109

The attached patch adds a password confirmation window to the

This patch asks the password as two separate questions (with a separate

especially in the graphical installer) to have them asked in the same
db_go.

Could you modify the patch to ask the questions together? The script
user-setup-ask for package user-setup has examples of the coding.

The idea is to be able to query the BTS for reports before Beta 3.

Re: Installing elilo on MacMiniIntel fails

2006-08-14 Thread Junichi Uekawa
Hi,

After electing elilo (GRUB/LILO were presented as alternatives) installing
elilo stalled at 50%. I had accepted to install into the only presented
partition (/dev/sda1, about 200 MB FAT32 partition, partman reported 3.1 kB
free memory before.). This first partition was created my the Apple
DiskUtility. /dev/sda6 where I installed the base system was formatted as an
ext3 24 GB FS using the Debian installer.

try running gptsync. Then installing lilo to partition / grub to partition
shoud work.

They are looking at FAT tables, not GPT, so you need to clone the data
from GPT to FAT, since parted will reset FAT (to the letter of EFI
spec).

see http://wiki.debian.org/MacBook, which seems to be the most
actively maintained out of all intel-mac related pages. We should
probably start thinking about consolidating them.

No, but offering the option to users with the result that data on the
partition will be destroyed (or at least unusable for the average user).

If the underlying issues cannot be solved then we need to find a way to
disable the resize option for Vista NTFS partitions (which is possible,
but I want to wait for reactions on #379628 and #380226 first).

See this mail for a setup I started last year, but which was discontinued
due to a general lack of interest from others:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2005/10/msg00229.html

It really would help if someone were willing to structurally tag
installation reports, even if only with architecture and d-i release.

I'd suggest to use not the date, but etch-beta3 to tag reports for
beta3, in line with the mail above.

I can update the page used to retrieve the info if you start on this.

Bug#382976: installation-report: Should lpr or cupsys-bsd be installed by default?

2006-08-14 Thread Ionut Georgescu
Package: installation-reports
Version: 2.17
Severity: important

I don't remember if cupsys was installed by default, but I certainly did
not install lpr. However, I had both of them installed on my system and
was wondering why I could not print.

My question is: if cupsys is being installed by default, shouldn't
cupsys-bsd also be installed instead of lpr?

I have reinstalled my desktop machine last week using the beta3
installer. See bug#381881 for the details of my installation.

It is not bad for usability if the questions actually need to be asked.
We generally look very critically at which questions are being asked and
reduce them as much as possible. Some localization questions are
currently being asked that don't need to be, but that is a known issue
expected to be resolved before the release of Etch.

Comments/Problems:

When booting from the CD, after loading the kernel and initial
ramdisk, d-i failed to detect the CD and prompted for a driver
floppy. I've reported this problem before. This laptop has SATA for
both the hard drive and the CD. Earlier versions of d-i were able to
see only one of the CD and hard drive at a time. I believe d-i beta 2
was able to see both when booting from the CD, but I had other
problems and switched back to Ubuntu. Ubuntu Breezy and Dapper both
install perfectly on this laptop.

I also tried copying the kernel and initrd from the CD to the hard
drive and booting with grub:

kernel /debian-installer/vmlinuz ramdisk_size=12000 root=/dev/ram rw
initrd /debian-installer/initrd.gz
boot

In this configuration, the system was able to see both the CD and the
floppy at the same time and I was able to proceed with installation.
I've filed that as a separate installation report.

this is a request for a simple digital clock (placed in probably the

This is indeed technically extremely difficult with a very high risk of
resulting in a broken system in corner cases.
Anyway, a large part of the installation (hardware-detection and such
would need to be done again anyway.

Also, the log is kept in memory for most of the install and will therefore
be lost on loss of power.

As this is very unlikely to be implemented, I'm closing the report.

We indeed prefer avoiding to approve too many people for the same

Of course, if the wish of the Traditional Chinese translation team is

Work-around(2): remove the drive
Note: 2.4.26 spins up the drive without any problem.

No work-around, esp driver is probably horribly broken. /dev/cdrom points to
nowhere after manual mount attempt.

Re: Switch to 2.6.17 kernel udebs (was: D-I Beta 3 - release today)

2006-08-14 Thread Frans Pop
On Friday 11 August 2006 17:09, Rick Thomas wrote:

Hello Rick,

I'm sorry, but I honestly don't know. It sounds to me that there has been
a regression in the kernel that results in your system not booting any
more. It will be good to test when images become available so we know for
certain. I expect powerpc daily builds to switch to 2.17 sometime later
this week.

Holger Levsen reported on August 9:
The image from there from the 23rd of July worked for me on a g3
oldworld, so give it a try.

Some time after that the miboot build broke, it should be working again
since August, the 4th (iirc), but I haven't had the time to test that
 myself.

This seems to contradict this report, which may be related to your
experience:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=379218

I wonder if this could be related to the amount of memory the box has. It
might be worth comparing this for working and non-working boxes.

Currently there are plenty of people reporting issues for powerpc
oldworld, but nobody seems to be working on tracing or fixing them. As
I've indicated before, the effort for that needs to come from the powerpc
community in Debian.

As far as I can tell none of the issues are fixable in the installer, but
I cannot really judge that in all cases. Someone who is able to do that
should reassign the bugs to the packages that are causing the issues (in
a lot of cases I would expect that to be the kernel).

Cheers,
FJP

No, but offering the option to users with the result that data on the
partition will be destroyed (or at least unusable for the average user).

Okay, leaving the severity at 'grave'.

If the underlying issues cannot be solved then we need to find a way to
disable the resize option for Vista NTFS partitions (which is possible,
but I want to wait for reactions on #379628 and #380226 first).

Ack.

Bug#382989: installation-report: Installation in finnish, almost OK

2006-08-14 Thread Frans Pop
On Monday 14 August 2006 16:32, Tapio Lehtonen wrote:
Some glitch during installgui, error message flashed too fast to read.
Someting about not being able to pan. Looked like after that some text
were in english and not finnish anymore.

Hmm. Does not ring any bells. Anything in the syslog about that?
If not, could you try to reproduce?
Note that some messages not being translated during package installation
(by tasksel) is a known issue.

Keyboard was not finnish in Gnome Desktop, had to change to PC 105 and
 Finnish layout.

Not sure about this. This may be due to localization-config currently not
being run. In that case this should be resolved hopefully before Etch.

Note that the keyboard layout probably also was incorrect in the installer
itself, which is a known issue.

Character set was UTF-8 only, added ISO-Latin-9 to get interoperability
 with older systems.

UTF-8 is new default for Etch.

I took screenshots during install, but can not view them, not eog and
 not gthumb can show them.

Strange. They should be ordinary PNGs. I have been able to view them in
the past.

Installer offered only american and british wordlists, wfinnish and
ifinnish should be there (altough proofreading finnish works badly
 until http://www.lemi.fi/voikko/ is in Debian).

Suggest you get the Finnish desktop and Finnish environment tasks
updated... Check in aptitude for their current contents and compare with
other languages.

Very nifty install. Especially the finnish translation was top quality.

Very funny :-)

Thanks for the report.

reassign 382976 tasksel
thanks

I don't remember if cupsys was installed by default, but I certainly
did not install lpr. However, I had both of them installed on my system
and was wondering why I could not print.

My question is: if cupsys is being installed by default, shouldn't
cupsys-bsd also be installed instead of lpr?

I have reinstalled my desktop machine last week using the beta3
installer. See bug#381881 for the details of my installation.

I have also seen during tests for Beta 3 that after a Desktop task
installation (using a mirror, so all packages available), you end up with
lpr installed and cupsys-bsd not installed, even though it is listed in
the task.

Bug#383066: debian-installer: Installer talks about the third console, but it is the fourth one.

2006-08-14 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: debian-installer
Severity: minor

My other computer installs Debian from
hard-drive-images/from-net-only (using images from
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/main/installer-i386\
/current//images/netboot/debian-installer/i386/ and 2.6 kernel
image) and aside from being bitten by bug# 254630 (so I have to
install everything as one huge ext3 partition), error messages
mention the third screen accessible by Alt+F3. Except that the
third screen is blank and the information (if it is the one) is
on the fourth screen accessible by Alt+F4.

Yes. IIRC it worked correctly for sarge.

Looking at the debian-cd SVN, the scripts for sarge and etch are
mostly identical. So that would be an issue with mkisofs.

Bug#382689: debian-installer: d-i etch beta3 tries to access /dev/md/0p1

Thomas Arendsen Hein wrote:
I booted d-i etch beta3 (full CD, x86) in expert mode.
The system has two S-ATA disks (sda and sdb).

When playing around with the installer I deleted two existing RAID
partitions and recreated them. d-i detected existing data (a LVM pv)
on the RAID partition and I deleted it and created a new one in the
 same place.

Now the installer presented me an error message that it can't access
the device /dev/md/0p1. The device /dev/md/0 existed.

You seem to be trying to create a partition on top of a RAID device. As
far as I know there is no standard way to do that (except for using LVM
over RAID).

Instead you should have the partitioner use the whole raid device for a
filesystem.

Since I'm not clear from your description exactly what you're doing (the
use of unclear terms like RAID partitions doesn't help), I can't be
more specific.

cupsys-bsd also be installed instead of lpr?

I have reinstalled my desktop machine last week using the beta3
installer. See bug#381881 for the details of my installation.

I have also seen during tests for Beta 3 that after a Desktop task
installation (using a mirror, so all packages available), you end up with
lpr installed and cupsys-bsd not installed, even though it is listed in
 the task.

lpr is installed by debootstrap since it's currently priority standard.
IMHO there's not much excuse to include lpr in standard.

I assume that aptitude is not balking at removing lpr and installing the
conflicting cupsys-bsd for some reason. I don't know why. Getting a log
of the output of this (which is exactly what tasksel runs) on a frsh
system would probably tell why:

aptitude -q --without-recommends -y install '~t^desktop$' '~t^gnome-desktop$'

If I run that here, it removes lpr and installs cupsys-bsd with no
problem though.

Bug#382889: marked as done (debian-installer: non-optimal order of operations)

2006-08-14 Thread Joey Hess
As far as I know there is absolutely no way to have user-setup being
run before partman in the current way the installer is working.

Is that actually true anymore? user-setup only touches /target in
user-setup-apply; user-setup-ask seems to not need /target at all, and
user-setup-udeb doesn't have any special dependencies either. Of course,
if something like bug #364526 is implemented, user-setup could come to
need a /target to run password checking code, or the like. But for now,
it doesn't seem to need it.

It seems that it could run user-setup-ask before localechooser, if we
really wanted it to. :-) Before partman is certianly a possibility.

There are certianly d-i components that need a full /target and/or
partitioned system before they can ask their questions. clock-setup,
apt-setup, pkgsel, and grub-installer come to mind. However that doesn't
seem like a good reason to close this bug out of hand.

That said, I don't actually see any benefit from running user-setup
before partman, as opposed to before apt-setup. In either case it's
running as part of a block of questions that all happen quite close
together with minimal wait time for the user.

Bug#321109: [PATCH] grub-installer password confirmation, debian #321109

2006-08-14 Thread Frans Pop
On Monday 14 August 2006 16:21, Julian Graham wrote:
Find attached a revised version of the patch that asks the questions
 together.

After looking at the patch a bit more I noticed that it conflicts with
current preseeding:
- it does not allow preseeding anymore because it empties password
- the grub-installer/password-mismatch does not really need its own db_go.

Also, when I suggested to combine the two questions into one dialog, I did
not realize that an empty password is a valid option. That makes
combining the questions less logical as 'password-again' would always be
asked, even if 'password' was empty, so I've reverted that. Sorry about
that.

Current preseeding looks at password + a boolean password-crypted to tell
if the password is encrypted or not. This is not in line with preseeding
an encrypted password in user-setup. So I have changed this too.
Because this change of the definition of password-crypted has the risk of
breaking existing preseed files, I have included a somewhat rough check
to prevent disasters.

With preseeding, the following situation also needs to be supported.
Passwords are preseeded, but with different values (typo in one); the
install is being run at critical priority. This would mean that the check
fails and an error is shown, but the user never gets a chance to correct
his entry as the password questions are never shown (being at low
priority).

I think the attached alternative patch resolves all these issues. Could
you please review it and test if this works?

Note that I've also changed the indentation to use tabs only. This is
standard for scripts in d-i as it helps reduce memory usage (1 tab is
less than 8 spaces...).

Cheers,
FJP

Example, I try to use synaptic my sudo password doesn't work. When I
tried to change the time the sudo password didn't work. Etc..

Stratus, do you know if there's some gnome tool that let's the user run
programs like these as root using sudo? Does tasksel omit installing it?

Maybe gksu ? Here's what I have in my
/usr/share/applications/synaptic.desktop (which is a standard file, ie,
not changed by me) :

Exec=gksu -u root /usr/sbin/synaptic

This way when I click on GNOME's menu shortcut to run Synaptic
(GNOME's frontend to APT), gksu is show and ask me for my root password
before launching Synaptic as root.

Please add this patch once beta3 is out of the way (or commit it earlier, as i
understand the beta3 package set are frozen, and so the repo should be open
for mods already).

The IBM POWER machines can run in virtualized mode (logical partitions), in
which case the serial console is /dev/hvc*. but you can also run linux on them
directly, and in this case, the serial console is /dev/hvsi*, at least on the
p505 i tried this one.

This patch adds support for that in rootskel.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

Comments/Problems:

1. Timezone selection didn't seem to let me choose for central European time
like sarge installer did.

2. Left select and install software which I left on the defaults. After
installation finished there was an error which was gone after the installer
retried installing everything again. Eventually it finished without errors
and rebooted resulting in a boot failure because the harddisk does not
seem to be bootable.

I'm an absolute beginner.
Installed sarge last week the same way without any such problems. I had to
use vim a couple of times though to get the Diamond Viper 550 to work with
something better than just VGA and to get the mouse wheel working on my
Genius Netscroll+ serial port mouse. But that was because i had no idea when
the installer asked me that serial is ttyS0, the Diamond Viper 550 has an
Nvidia RAGE TNT, the keyboard is a pc104 and my monitor IIama MF-8221
(Vision Master 21) has horizontal 25-85/vert 50-120. Everything worked fine,
later i even downloaded and installed the nvidia driver to get OpenGL
working too. But later when trying to upgrade from kernel 2.4 to 2.6 and
nvidia specifics stopped working and i could not get it to work again.
Requiring testing for nvidia legacy driver anyway, i thought it would be
simpler to download the etch beta 2 and hoping to get such options directly.
But i have not seen them, but maybe i would have if only the system would
boot.

If there is anything special you would like me to run on this system to
provide feedback, then just let me know. I'm used to computers for about 30
years now but this is my first time with Linux. Having seen a bit of Debian
so far with the above mentioned sarge installer last week, I'm actually
planning to run Debian only on some of my computers here.

Regards,

Pieter Roodnat

Hello,

the following patch creates the /lib64 symlink
which is currently created on the amd64 architecture
also on ppc64.

The /lib64 symlink is necessary to make the installer
images work on ppc64 because the dynamic linker has
to be accesible as /lib64/ld64.so.1.

Andreas Jochens

Bug#382983: d-i beta3 on SGI Indigo2 (IP22)

2006-08-14 Thread Christian Perrier
Christian, can you confirm that the installer uses a UTF-8 console ?

Yep, it does.

Bug#383066: debian-installer: Installer talks about the third console, but it is the fourth one.

tag 383066 pending
clone 383066 -1
reassign 383066 lvmcfg
reassign -1 partman-lvm
thanks

A scan shows that only two packages still refer to VT3. These have now
been fixed in line with other packages.

Thanks,
FJP

Re: [PATCH] Better flexibility to control system base installation

Does anyone has comments about it?

(Ignoring the debug stuff which was already removed in a later version of
the patch.)

This patch gives me the feeling that functionality is being added because
it is possible, not because it is really needed. IMO there this patch at
least adds a certain amount of redundancy.

I can understand the desire for a specific debootstrap script, but I feel
adding support for _preseeding_ INCLUDES and EXCLUDES is redundant,
especially when targeted at CDDs:
- CDDs should be able to use the include and exclude files instead of
  preseeding;
- includes and excludes may not even be needed anymore now that you can
  use a completely tailored debootstrap script instead;
- Colin recently already added the option to preseed installation of extra
packages in pkgsel (pkgsel/include), which is a much more safe place
  to install additional packages.

For the debootstrap script, I wonder if that really needs to be
preseedable or if it would be better to have base-installer look for a
script with a fixed name in a fixed place. It is only really of use to
people who will probably already be creating their own images.

IMO with all these different options to include, exclude, customize, etc.
we are starting to run the risk of making d-i a maintenance and
documentation hell and also of not being able to support people anymore
who use these options incorrectly and thus create problems for
themselves. Do we really want to make it this easy for people to mess
with the base system installation?

Of course, others may disagree with me. I have no problem with that.

If the option to preseed includes and excludes _is_ added, I suggest to
make it so that both comma and space separated lists are accepted (see
Colin's implementation of pkgsel/include).

Cheers,
FJP
