Might have been a bit late though.. Mainly, just great! I have installed quite a few debian 3.0 system, this was mostly a much more 'polished' experience. You are noted as the last translator of the Debian configuration translation for the console-common package. Hmm, sorry. It seems that some translators of console-common did set debian-boot as the Language-Team for their translations. Hence, when I sent update notifications to them, CC'ing the language team, a few mails have been sent to -boot. Sorry for those of you who have slow links. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#388085: AW: Bug#388085: installation on Apple G5
Hi, I can not give you the partition table or map, because I reinstalled everything again. I now have installed MacOSX on a clean disk, the first 200 GB free HFS partition, then 40 GB for MacOSX HFS+ case-sensitive with journaling feature. After the MacOS X installation went fine, I installed Debian again, now with the latest Netinstall ISO-image for etch. Still the Partition Tool in the Debian Installer, did not recognize any of the existing Mac Partition Map. I switched to a shell and used mac-fdisk to create a Apple Bootstrap partition, a Linux Swap partition and a Linux partition for a big ext3 root filesystem. After that I could install the base system. The installation of the bootloader (yaboot) did not succeed. After I rebooted the Mac and booted again into the Rescue-System I could install yaboot. Now the dual boot is working fine. I think the Kernel does not reread the partition map after I added the Linux partitions. Are you having automatically support for Mac Partition Maps in the Debian Installer? bye Waldemar -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: Sven Luther [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: Montag, 18. After the MacOS X installation went fine, I installed Debian again, now with the latest Netinstall ISO-image for etch. Still the Partition Tool in the Debian Installer, did not recognize any of the existing Mac Partition Map. Can i get a copy of the partition map of this one ? Or better yet, send it as bug report to the parted package ? What version of mac-os-x was this anyway ? I switched to a shell and used mac-fdisk to create a Apple Bootstrap partition, a Linux Swap partition and a Linux partition for a big ext3 root filesystem. After that I could install the base system. The installation of the bootloader (yaboot) did not succeed. What does the parted command line tool say you about your partition ? Can you run it, eventually do a print in it, and paste the output here ? After I rebooted the Mac and booted again into the Rescue-System I could install yaboot. Now the dual boot is working fine. I think the Kernel does not reread the partition map after I added the Linux partitions. It does if you ask it about it, parted and libparted based tools should handle this just fine. mac-fdisk is kinda obsoleted. Are you having automatically support for Mac Partition Maps in the Debian Installer? Sure. But then maybe apple created some bug or incompatiblity with their latest version of mac os x ? When sending a .po file to be translated, please include word diff for strings that are marked fuzzy. It is much easier to unfuzzy when I can see what has changed in the english text. Bug#388247: tasksel: strange entries in gnome-desktop
package: tasksel version: 2.54 severity: minor Hi! In the 'gnome-desktop' task in 'tasksel/tasks' there is a line which explains that gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly should be installed to allow totem to play more formats. As far as I can see, totem-gstreamer is not installed. What gets installed is totem-mozilla, which depends on totem, which depends on either totem-xine or totem-gestreamer with the xine frontend being first choice. Same for the dependencies of the gnome-desktop-environment meta-package. With totem-xine installed there is no need for the additional gstreamer-plugins. If you want to install the totem-gstreamer package instead, it should be installed explicitely and not via the totem-mozilla or the gnome-desktop-environment dependencies. However, if totem-gstreamer is the one you want to install, there is no need for the libtheora0 package (allow totem to play theora files two lines above), as this is automatically installed via totem-gstreamer's dependencies on gstreamer0.10-base. For totem-xine it is not needed at all. Thanks for your efford! As said, a year or two ago, i used grub2 to boot a dual power3 box, which is a powerpc 64bit machine. It worked just fine, especially since the default method for openfirmware bootloaders is to run as 32bit. I am not sure it makes sense to run them in 64bit mode, or even if it is supposed to work. All the documentation i have seen on this topic, even from IBM and others, show that the bootloader should be run in 32bit mode, and the kernel is launched from 32bit, and then sets up the 64bit stuff, so there should be no major difference with regard to grub2. Notice that here ppc64 is confusing, you probably speak about the one-man-show pure-64 thingy from Andreas Jochens, and not from the kernel arch ppc64. Notice that this is not and will never be an officially supported arch by debian, and despite me asking, Andreas Jochens has shown absolutely no interest to cooperate with the biarch or multi-arch effort, even though this won't happen anymore for etch anyway. I'd like to avoid some specific GR by making whatever is going to be voted upon moot ;-) We should have a way of doing the same thing, only with a custom network source. Probably not a hard thing to do. Otherwise, looks fine. But you may be reinventing bits of d-i. Yes; I noticed that too, in the mean time. Perhaps the correct structure is this: after choosing Customization modules, the user gets a menu of possible places to get them from (CD, USB, floppy, net, etc.). Chickening out of the hard work, we could just limit this list to CD-ROM, floppy, or network. The list of retrievers is limited to that anyway. Main problem is going to be the fact that currently, every installation image contains just one or two retrievers, not more. As a result, you can't download modules from the network when doing a CD-ROM based install, nor can you install modules from CD-ROM when doing a network-based install. Personally, this is the only feature that boot-floppies had while d-i doesn't that I would *love* to see again. It'd be great to be able to mount a CD or DVD-ROM in a machine, run apache off of it, copy the initrd images to a TFTP server, and install a bunch of machines over the network. With boot-floppies, this was possible; with d-i, it isn't. But I digress. [...] However, your implementation has the advantage of being simpler and less dependent on complicated setup of the customization discs. Not really. I always saw the CD-ROM stuff as intended for manufacturers who want to support Debian installations with their official driver CD-ROM; it's not unreasonable to request some more from them than from J. Random User who downloads udebs, puts them on a floppy, crosses his fingers, and boots the installer. Let's prove that Joey's six month estimate is wrong by doing it in less time even though we don't understand d-i very well. :-) I'm not so sure anymore his estimate is wrong; but, hey, let's try. -- Fun will now commence -- Seven Of Nine, Ashes to Ashes, stardate 53679.4 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. It hasn't been tested at all yet (hence the commit to /people rather than /trunk), but this is mostly meant as a proof of concept anyway. I'd like to avoid some specific GR by making whatever is going to be voted upon moot ;-) So I'm looking at how much of d-i is ready for multiple udeb sources Checking the net-retriver modules makes it clear that it ASSumes that there's only one source. I'm not entirely sure how to disabuse it of that assumption. I've been thinking that the best way here is to just nuke the configuration of the retriever before (or while) running customization-modules in some way. We'll be assuming that there is at least one way to get udebs onto the running debian-installer session; so the assumption that udebs have been downloaded isn't totally unfair, and there won't be a need to download additional modules at that point anymore. At least I think so; would have to do a test run to be sure. There's an easy way to do it: make a copy of net-retriever (customization-net-retriever) which instead of using the choose-mirror debconf information, prompts for a URL (and *doesn't* cache it, so that it can be run repeatedly with different URLs). I hate to duplicate code, but some of the net-retriever code (like the signature checking) should be torn out for this purpose anyway, so this is probably the way to go. Except that you'll inflate the initrd's by unnecessary amounts, which will make it harder to install Debian on RAM-limited machines. Clearly not the way to go. [...] The other way is to make the net-retriever program handle both alternatives, but if it's invoked from anna (as it should be), there's no way to tell it which version is wanted, so I think that's not workable. I think maybe I should just write this now. Be my guest ;-) If we use the more complicated anna-using version I suggested rather than your very straightforward code, then for local disk udeb loading: floppy-retriever seems good to go; it even invokes mountfloppy, and it doesn't need a Packages file or anything. Right. This should be the model for other 'customization' retrievers. cdrom-retriever looks pretty much good to go as well, but it doesn't similarly handle mounting and umounting, and it wants a fairly complicated setup on the CD. So maybe it should be forked. The complicated setup isn't too big a problem; the mounting and umounting can be done from customization-modules. As above, duplicating code is a bad idea for d-i, and I'm not convinced here. I believe the main customization menu is the place to handle ejecting and replacing the installation CD (which is clearly the Hard Part). Why? Mostly because it has to be done for all local media (CDs, floppy, USB stick, etc.), and will be done in approximately the same way for each one: check whether the device is mounted, umount if it is, do the work, remount it at the end. Right. (Frankly I'm unsure how the multiple installation CDs work now: I guess none but the first contain udebs.) Exactly. I'm not *quite* sure how to write that code (everything else mentioned here I think I could write right now pretty much). There is no usbstick-retriever or harddisk-retriever. There should be, for reasons beyond customization disks: it's a little silly that those options require an ISO image. :-) Couldn't agree more, but they're not as urgent as 'making sure it works'. These should be substantially simpler than cdrom-retriever or floppy-retriever. at least easier than cdrom-retriever, yeah. I did some hand-testing only, not a full install with it, but it seems mostly ok. In any case, there is an error in the code using /sys over the old devfs code compared to the older devfs code. The devfs code always substract 1 from the partitions, while the /sys code never does it. The right behaviour is to check for the /proc/device-tree/openprom/firmware-version property, and discriminate depending on the version there. Only newer firmware versions have this property, and only those firmware more recent or equal to 1.2.99 have partitions starting at 1. older firmwares and those not having the property all start at 0. This might be partly by design, as Recommends are a bit too common in the archive at some places. Ubuntu started the process of fixing some and the apt version which will enforce this is in Debian's experimental as well, so I suppose at some point the tasksel maintainer will see a lot of people breathing behind his neck. :) Yeah, well that is a welcome change. I was pointing out that avoiding the problem was not going to solve it. But yes, aptitude is correct in its handling of Recommends (except perhaps when Recommends are added to packages). I think already mentionned the apt update which should go a long way in helping us fix the situation. I recall the mention of tasksel not honoring Recommends back when I added the rhythmbox - avahi Recommends which resulted in lots of flames from people not agreeing on what should be installed by default (me included). In the end, the package doesn't get installed currently despite this being the wish of the package maintainer. I'm not sure this is a good situation, and I'm not too happy that I can't enforce my decision. I certainly don't want to add a Depends just to make my point, as it would be technically incorrect, yet I really wish my Recommends would be honored (or debated in the tech-ctte). -- Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. how to control/override dev assigment 3ware and USB
I am trying to install using Debian etch b3 daily snapshot for 2006.09.19. The system is a Chaintech MB with Intel 875 chipset. There is a 3ware 8006 (SATA, 2port) and a USB card reader installed. The CD is attached to secondary IDE on-board controller. I have now disabled the primary IDE on-board controller and the on-board SATA controller. The installation goes fine. The 3ware is found as /dev/sde. Using the b3 installer, grub failed to install but with the daily snapshot grub installed fine. Upon reboot, grub is found, the 3ware is found as /dev/sde, a couple of things accessing the 3ware go fine, then the USB card-reader is found and it assigns devices /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd, and then stops /dev/sde, where upon the boot freezes. I need to some how overcome this conflict. I booted a Knoppix LiveCD to try fixing the system, or at least get device details but the logs are empty. Is this a known problem? Does any one have suggestions on how best to fix this? Thanks R.Parr, RHCE, Temporal Arts -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? One thing I had to do manually, however, was to re-create the XFS filesystems. This machine is my firewall, and naturally selinux is useful for a machine in that position. Unfortunately, the default inode size for mkfs.xfs is 256 bytes, which is not optimum for selinux (see http://www.redhat.com/magazine/001nov04/features/selinux/ for one take on the situation, but there are others: try googling for selinux xfs). After the installer created the partitions and filesystems, I went into the second console with alt-f2 and re-created the three XFS filesystems by unmounting each, running mkfs.xfs -f -i size=512 /dev/hdX and remounting them. All worked fine after that. Since selinux comes with the kernel, I'd suggest that you make the XFS inode size 512 bytes by default, or at least provide for the user supplying options to mkfs. (I suppose I could have done this myself if I'd used expert mode, but I didn't think of it). There doesn't seem to be any major disadvantage to increasing the inode size, but I must admit I haven't looked very hard. I do have one other suggestion, unrelated to the actual installation: I came across the request to submit an installation report on http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch05s03.html#submit-bug, in section 5.3.6. This section, however, doesn't seem to be too sure whether the bug should be filed against the package installation-report or installation-reports. It would probably save some confusion if the web page were more consistent. I tried first to file under installation-reports (plural), but that resulted in a crash in reportbug. I'll file a separate bug report. .Ron -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report. I'll try to solve the problem in some other way then. I've cloned the bug already; meaning I still consider the original bug a bug. I will change meta-gnome2 at your request again, I simply forgot about tasksel not following Recommends. Come to think of it, tasksel pulling in Recommends isn't such a bad idea. This might be partly by design, as Recommends are a bit too common in the archive at some places. Ubuntu started the process of fixing some and the apt version which will enforce this is in Debian's experimental as well, so I suppose at some point the tasksel maintainer will see a lot of people breathing behind his neck. :) -- Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
