Bug#419665: Install from cd version 3.1 fail because kernel is removed during the process (or try to be)
Package: installation-reports Boot method: CD1 and http package during install Image version: 3.1 (sarge build on 20050305) Date: 17-04-2007 at ten O'clock Machine: Dell optiplex gx260 Processor: Intel P4 2.4 GHz Memory: 768 Mo Partitions: / - 10 Go - Amorcable set swap - 1.5 Go /tmp - 2 Go /usr - 30 Go /var - 30 Go /home - 6.5 go Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot: [O] Detect network card:[O] Configure network: [O] Detect CD: [O] Load installer modules: [O] Detect hard drives: [O] Partition hard drives: [O] Install base system:[O] Clock/timezone setup: [O] User/password setup:[O] Install tasks: [E] Install boot loader:[O] Overall install:[E] Comments/Problems: Booting from the cd-rom, I type linux26 to have this kernel. All work fine when cames the apt installation. I define source from http mirror Then problem arise. The apt decide to remove inird and the current kernel-2.6.8-2-386. It doesn't provide another kernel. I say Yes to remove (to try and see what come next). Then the installer fail to popup and let me choose package, telling me their is a problem in the package. I retry twice to get the install manager but no. I go to finish install and after some confirm, the prompt appear. I log as a user and make su to become root then I launch reboot. Grub came but it don't know what to do (there is no more kernel to launch). I already seen this problem. Here it's how it came. I used the same Cd-rom but at this time all work fine. I logged as root and continue my installation. Provide apache2 and nagios-text. But finally, I decide to purge nagios-text and apache2. When I purge apache2, the kernel-2.6.?.386 and initrd was set to be removed (this time I say no). Each time, I use aptitude, It try to remose this two (their are set to be removed in thier statut). So, I decide to erase all my partition and the first description is this part. I see that, initrd seem no longer in use with the debian 4.0 and replaced by other but why my machine is killed ? I don't understand why initrd and the kernel is removed if nothing replace them. Best regard Tony
G-I builds temporarily disabled
Yesterday I noticed some new dependencies in library udebs used for the graphical installer. These are now causing build failures. In order to have at least some correct builds and make sure that CD images can be built, I have now disabled all G-I targets for the daily builds. I already filed bug reports for these new dependencies yesterday: #419592, #419593, #419595. Cheers, FJP pgpP4TlrkXZPz.pgp Description: PGP signature

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/apds06.html.en Can I make a suggestion that or maybe a change request for use of space key or Enter key rather than + or - keys for expanding the options as referred to in the above document. I am not the first person to be fooled by this and most likely not the last. I do not believe using + and - is an intuitive way of using these menus and not everyone will read the Appendix of the installation guide. Bug#419665: RE Bug#419665: Acknowledgement (Install from cd version 3.1 fail because kernel is removed during the process (or try to be))
Hi, I make some test and this is what I discover : Because of Debian 4.0 and this major change, the stable version remove any kernel-* and initrd. Of course because this is obsolete with 4.0. The matter is when you came from 3.1 (and I assume older release). Aptitude (as apt) will set as remove this for kernel-* and initrd unless, I guess, you change source list for specific sarge (Not Ech i.e. 4.0). One way to run away the problem and successfully go to 4.0 is to say Yes to the removing (I don't try a No for this test) of initrd and the kernel-image-*. BUT you must not reboot (No more kernel or initrd), before to do that, You must install the new package of linux-kernel (note that only 2.6.* are possible, and choose form your plateform). New package accordling to the doc begin with linux-image-*. aptitude will do a great job with dependencies and install the new initraw-fs (I see wierd error appear during this phase, the remove of my lovely Grub for this horrible Lilo. I install again my grub). All work fine after, and I reboot. Woot, I have Etch now :) Maybe, to make automatic install of this new package otherwise initrd will remove and if user say Yes, the kernel too. Thus, Tony

debian-installer plans for the lenny cycle
Hi The release team is currently working on a schedule for the lenny release cycle. For that, we want to gather some data from the bigger software packaging teams in Debian first. We would like to know which major features are expected to be added in the next 24 months and how much time you expect them to need to get stable enough for a Debian stable release. Our current, very rough plans would mean a release in 18 months with some padding in both directions, which would lead to a lenny release around October 2008. We expect to shuffle this a bit around to fit everyone's needs, so please tell us if this date works for you. Cheers Luk -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. REQUEST: Official Debian AmigaOne support
I know that cross-posting is not wanted (I posted this message already on debian-powerpc with the title Help needed for Debian AmigaOne support), but I guess debian-powerpc is more user oriented (correct me if I'm wrong). Hi, I'm asking for help to add support for the AmigaOne (desktop PPC) to Debian GNU/Linux. Currently AmigaOne users have to install a Debian Woody base system, before they can upgrade to/install sarge or etch (also there is no other GNU/Linux distribution available for the A1 ATM and therefore A1 users are pushing me to create a Debian install CD ;) ). I took a look at the Debian installer and the kernel build package (make-kpkg) and found some C-code/scripts/makefiles/etc. that would have to be modified, as the AmigaOne is identified as an 68k Amiga/APUS system (which is totally wrong). Also support for U-boot (A1 firmware) images would have to be added to make-kpkg. A special bootloader package should not be necessary, since U-boot supports PReP boot partitions and AmigaOS4 comes with a second level bootloader with ext3 support. A problem may be the Linux kernel for the A1. Currently only kernel versions up to 2.6.16.x are working on the A1 (more or less due to the ppc to powerpc architecture change in the Linux kernel), but I'm planning to start on AmigaOne support for the powerpc architecture as soon as kernel 2.6.22 is out. The A1 platform code is not in the official Linux kernel tree - I hope this is not a criterion for its inclusion in Debian (albeit it makes things harder). I would be grateful, if somebody could help me with the modifications on the debian-installer and the make-kpkg package, as I have no experience with building debian (installer) packages and CD images yet. Bug#353573: partman: [hppa] 'PALO' partition on /dev/sda changed to 'linux' during install to /dev/sdc
reassign 353573 partman-auto severity 353573 important thanks During an install on hppa using partman-auto, I noticed that the partition table for /dev/sda was going to be modified even though I was installing to /dev/sdc. After rebooting I discovered that the type of the first partition (/dev/sda1) had been changed from F0 (Linux/PA-RISC boot) to 83 (Linux). I've now managed to trace this issue to the clean_method function in partman-auto/recipes.sh that is called from partman-auto/perform_recipe. This function will delete the method files for _all_ partitions on _all_ devices. In general this is probably OK, but not if the method file is used to identify special boot partitions as is the case for HPPA/PALO and possibly also for other arches (e.g. efi, prep). For a PALO partition, the method file contains palo and the script partman-palo/update.d/palo_sync_flag relies on the presence of this to retain the palo flag. I'm not sure what the correct solution for this would be: - quit running 'clean_method' - quit running 'clean_method' for other devices than the one being autopartitioned - only delete method if it contains certain values (like format) - don't delete method if it contains certain values (palo, prep, ...) I'm not quite sure why clean_method is run at all. Presumably it is to undo any earlier (manual) changes. In that case running the scripts in undo.d as is done for Undo changes to partitions could be a better idea. Currently used values for method are: format keep swap lvm raid crypto efi newworld palo prep pgpwzRcJJh7bO.pgp Description: PGP signature

Inclusion of firmware itself is in general an extremely difficult subject because of licencing and sourcecode issues; it's not completely clear what you mean by support though. I just thought about support for U-boot kernel images (U-boot is GPL). That would include a debian package for the mkimage program (converts a zImage to a uImage, it's GPL, too) and the necessary modifications for the make-kpkg program to compile kernel packages that includes a kernel image in the uImage format. There is also the issue that the powerpc kernel already has a lot of different flavors and there may be some resistance to adding another one if that should be needed. Well, the powerpc kernel tree supports newer U-boots (with support for device trees) and kernel 2.6.22 should include a new bootwrapper for old U-boots (for firmware that can't be upgraded for some reason). I don't see any reason why the A1 shouldn't be support in the Linux kernel, as it is a normal G3/G4 PPC system (with some bugs for which the Linux kernel already provides workarounds). preseeding: making a question critical
Hi, I've been customising Debian installation with preseeding using a preseed file on the Netinst CD, which is mostly working out OK. However, one point eludes me - getting a question to be always asked, regardless of its priority. Specifically, the hostname is set via DHCP but we'd like the installing person to override that - i.e. the hostname question should always be asked. But, it doesn't get asked, presumably because the question's not of critical priority. Setting d-i netcfg/get_hostname seen false hasn't helped (presumably because of the priority issue). Re: Re: Bug#407460: USB ethernet interface renamed after installation on NSLU2 which causes the system to be inaccessible
Hi Markus On 4/16/07, Markus Knapp [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Last week I got a new NSLU2, took the new install-image from http://www.slug-firmware.net/d-dls.php and tried to install. Hardly everithing went good till the installation of the base system. There I got the same error as mentioned here: initramfs-tools could not be installed. I'm not sure why you think what you are seeing is related to #407460, but somebody has reported a similar problem in debian-arm, so let's continue this discussion there for now.
