This script is used by debootstrap as a recipe how to make the
chroot and currently there's no difference between them all except the
package versions and dependencies that are dynamicaly resolved.

To chroot into etch you'd need to create a chroot using debootstrap
(man debootstrap) and then use chroot command to change to it (man
chroot).

Debian Installer Status Update - October 11th 2007

2007-10-11 Thread Otavio Salvador
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

= New stuff =

 * win32-loader has been added to daily CD images and is now used for
   autorun too;
 * multipath-udeb and libaio1-udeb have been introduced but are being
   excluded from CD builds since they're not being used yet;
 * dhcp-client-udeb has been excluded from CD images since
   dhcp3-client-udeb migration is over;
 * weekly CD/DVD builds have been enabled again (using sid d-i, by
   now).
 * netinst images were huge due to debian-cd including dependencies of
   excluded packages (#410418).
 * cdebconf has received a lot of code refactoring, plugin system had
   deeply changes and gtk frontend has been rewritten.
 * cdebconf-entropy has been updated to use the new plugin system;
 * mklibs has fixed our building errors due a lack of symbols;

= Resolved breakage in daily builds =

 * newt had issues with time changing (#436497) but a workaround is
   implemented in clock-setup when updating time during installation
   (#436340);
 * g{++,cc}-multilib priority is now lower than standard (#424924).

= General issues =

 * Chinese (and Japanese/Korean) texts issue in slang2 (#425835) is
   still there;
 * klibc doesn't build on sparc (#440721)

= Kernel status =

 * All architectures has moved to 2.6.22 except m68k;
 * linux-modules-di-m68k-2.6 isn't uploaded due the lack of loop-aes
   and squashfs since linux-headers lack modules.lds files (#402061).

= Blockers for final release =

 * Regressions in cleaning old LVM partitions (#425829);
 * sparc kernel seems to produces unkillable processes (#433187).
 * linux-libc-dev has type declaration conflict (#434040, #435700)
   ('''ignored for beta1 since a workaround is used''')
 * m68k has floppy flavours disabled due a full-disk. ('''ignored
   since m68k isn't a release-set arch''')

ok, thank you. Now I'm having problems in installing nearly any new packages
while jailed within etch:

# apt-get install dpkg-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  dpkg-dev: Depends: dpkg (= 1.13.20) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: perl5
Depends: perl-modules but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

Poll about active D-I contributors, current work

2007-10-11 Thread Christian Perrier
Most Debian Installer contributors heard about the poll launched
back...in early August, to get feedback from the members of the D-I
team (160 people with commit access !).

The work is still going on.

On Oct 8th, I sent a personal mail to every person who didn't answer
the poll already. The main point was trying to avoid falling in
various spam traps, which is tricky.

So, now, the number of people who didn't answer yet dropped from 60 to
48. People have up to Oct. 22nd to answer and then I'll start removing
commit access.

In case you recognize your Alioth login below, please get in touch
with me ASAP or yoru commit access to D-I could be removed.

As there are many translators in that list, I also CC debian-i18n.

booted kernel version of latest d-i testing images does not match available module packages kernel version

2007-10-11 Thread Shane Spencer
For a week or so now the snapshots of the d-i image at the following
urls do not have d-i module packages that match the kernel version of
the installation CD

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-CD-1.iso
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-businesscard.iso
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-businesscard.iso

I believe this is the case for i386 as well, however I may be wrong.

Is this the appropriate place to report this? I was tempted to use the
'd-i' and 'lenny' tag on bugs.debian.org however there didn't seem to
be any bugs in the tracker related to ISO images

  This package has CJK fonts are needed for newer d-i.
  I believe it's safe to unfreeze this package usually because
  this udeb package is related with only CJK fonts of GUI d-i.

  No objection

 unblocked.

Thank you for unblocking it.
But strangely it won't enter in testing even unblock is set.
FYI ttf-cjk-compact hasn't any debs but only
ttf-cjk-compact-udeb udeb (all arch).

Thanks,

Unfortunately udebs are not handled automatically by the testing
migration script. These are taken care of by a script of Jeroen (in Cc).

Re: Poll about active D-I contributors, current work

2007-10-11 Thread priti Patil
Christian,

I won't be able to work on this for few months (at least till Feb 2008), if
you can keep my access persistent till that time it'll be good otherwise
I'll make it sure that it can be delegated to somebody else (language
knower) as a substitute for a while.

Thanks Kartik for updates.

 Most Debian Installer contributors heard about the poll launched
 back...in early August, to get feedback from the members of the D-I
 team (160 people with commit access!).
