Not saying its a good idea, but what would be the issues with creating
additional flavors of select etch installers builds? e.g.,
netboot/netboot+, netinst/netinst+, etc.

I would say an additional disadvantage is the complexity; these boot
options seem pretty straightforward (esp if the "kernel" alias is
added), but we lose the benefit of "just working".

I think I could use some clarification here. If there are metapackages
for both etch and etch 1/2 kernels available (e.g. linux-image-2.6-686
and linux-image-2.6-23-686), would this prevent the installer from
selecting the correct metapackage?

Default metapackages are certainly something I'd like to see kept, to
avoid the no-auto-upgrade problem we had w/ kernel abi changes in sarge.

Which would solve the complexity issue I see w/ 3)

Bug#283521: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [Debian Wiki] Update of "DebianInstaller/ReleaseProcess" by FransPop]

2007-12-13 Thread Holger Levsen

thanks

Hi,

IMHO "* update pointer to manual in syslinux text
(http://bugs.debian.org/283521 )" should be added to
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/LennyGoals

And if #283521 is fixed by pointing to http://www.debian.org/doc/ - the first
link on that points to http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual -

Three years ago I thought it was better to point to the installation manual.
Today I think it's better to point to _the_ page about documentation for
Debian. For which http://www.debian.org/doc/ IMO qualifies. (That page could
certainly be improved, but that's another issue. And IMO it's better to point
to that page than to the generic www.debian.org.)

And yet another issue is that according to a quick grep only two out of ten
architectures display information about www.debian.org at all... If you agree
with this generic approach to link to the documentation I'm volunteering to
go through all architectures boot messages and suge a paragrah. Also if we
agree on another way :-)

regards,
Holger

You are using a lenny_d-i image, which is known to be broken but is also not

I've asked the debian-cd people to improve the information on the

New build missing dhcp-client

2007-12-13 Thread Charles Abdouch
I just downloaded and attempted to install the Debian GNU/Linux testing
"Lenny" - Official Snapshot i386 NETINST Binary-1 20071213-11:53 i386 build

When I get to the Network stage, it finds the hardware, but stops with a red
pop up that says:

No DHHCP client was found. The package requires pump or dchp-client.

The DHCP configuration process will be aborted.

I manually set the network parameters to continue the install.

AFAICT you are correct: the config script in dh-consoledata needs to be
changed and then console-data must be uploaded with an updated versioned
build dependency on the new version of that package.

> That script is Perl source...and really hard for me to understand. So,
> some help figuring exactly what needs modification is probably
> required.

The problem here is that having the keymap policy question asked is
completely correct in all other use cases, so the only solution I can come
up with is to somehow tell console-data that it is being installed inside
D-I and to skip the question only in that specific case.

The attached patch does this by checking for the existence of a file in
/tmp: /tmp/debian-installer/keymap-policy-default. The patch has been tested
and does what we want.
Even though it probably is not strictly necessary, I explicitly set
keymap/policy that seems most consistent with the rest of the script,

As we install locales from the post-base-installer 05localechooser hook
script, it seems logical to have that file touched (in /target of course)
in that hook script.

If we want to allow for the fact that locales could also be installed for
other reasons, we should delay deleting the file/dir to finish-install. One
option there would be 05localechooser, but we could also make the directory
more general (with an eye on future other uses) and remove it in 95umount
instead.
(Yes, I know that /tmp will be cleaned on reboot too, but IMO cleaning up
after yourself is a good general principle.)

If anyone can think of a cleaner solution (or a better name/location for the
temp file), please shout.

If this patch is acceptable, I request that both console-common and
console-data be uploaded with urgency=medium (unless there are other, more
risky changes too).
After that I'll make the necessary changes in D-I.

Cheers,
FJP

I've reassigned the report to the relevant package so that its authors can
have a look at it.

It's not that difficult. Just prepare the USB stick as described in the
manual. For just testing the installer, I'd suggest just copying the
businesscard CD image onto the stick.

The daily builds are broken ATM due to a library transition. If you go one
directory level up, you'll find older daily builds. Just take the most
recent one that did build correctly.

Hi Frans,

I am affraid that I will not have opportunity to do this before January:
I will use this laptop for a seminar, so I am too scared to play with
partman before. After, I will be far from my tftpd server, and the
laptop has no CD-ROM drive. But please do not hesitate to ping me if I
do not answer before the 15th of January.

Alternatively, I may have strongly over-estimated the complexity of
booting the isntaller from an USB stick ? Then I could do the test after
the seminar during my holidays… But I do not find anything in
http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/ (the link for "ther
images (netboot, usb stick, floppy, etc)").

Have a nice day,

I strongly doubt that this would be related to the frontend.

Charles: if you can still reproduce this, could you run partman after adding
a 'set -x' at the top of /lib/partman/definitions.sh?

Note this file was very recently moved to /lib/partman//lib/base.sh.
Depending on the image you use, you may have to add it there instead.

Bug#456154: debian-installer: amd64 re-boot fails due to missing /etc/crypttab

2007-12-13 Thread Torsten Neumann
Package: debian-installer
Severity: important

Hi there,

while trying to install debian I encountered the problem that the
installed system was unbootable.

The setup I tried is a md setup with everything crypted except /boot

This was reproducible with debian-40r1-amd64-CD-1.iso and unofficial
netinst cd from kmuto (because of ICH9 chipset and e1000 support, my
disks/cdrom are detected properly with the official cd's)

Here is the way I tried to install

1) Partition the disks
/dev/sda1   =>  256MB
/dev/sda2   =>  rest of disk
/dev/sdb1   =>  256MB
/dev/sdb2   =>  rest of disk
2) Set partition type to raid autodetect for all of the above
3) Setup raids
/dev/md0=>  [ sda1, sdb1 ]
/dev/md1=>  [ sda2, sdb2 ]
4) Choose /dev/md0 as ext3 which should be mounted on /boot
5) Choose /dev/md1 as target for a crypted disk (refered as
/dev/mapper/crypt for the rest of this text)
6) Setup LVM with /dev/mapper/crypt as physical disk
vg00 => /dev/mapper/crypt
lvol-root 2GB /
lvol-swap 8GB swap
lvol-usr8GB /usr
lvol-var8G /var
lvol-home 16GB/home
7) Happily install debian on it. Works all fine until I try to boot
into the just installed system. There it hangs with (something
similiar to)
vg00-lvol-root not found
vg00-lvol-root not found
Waiting for root filesystem
until it drops into a busybox shell. Disks are detected before, since
I got the message from md that md1 is not synchronized.

Doing the same like above just change / to be on md0 instead of the
crypted volume the system boots at least into single user mode.
Examining the install I found out that there was only an empty
/etc/crypttab, adding the entry for /dev/md1 manually I could mount
all the devices and then the system boots normally.

>From above I conjecture that also the failed try with / on the crypted
device was due to a missing crypttab.

  Torsten

Let's make it clear that the current console-* "maintainer" is really
in trouble to deal with that issue, which indeed lies in
console-common and its bunch of Perl maintainer scripts.
