I'm not (and never have been) against persistent device naming. I see the

that they don't solve the whole problem.

This makes me personally not very motivated to implement something in the
installer that's based on those current options.

That should be relatively simple to fix. But it does indicate that we can

In general I guess that if you want to work on implementing something like
this, you should be prepared to fix such minor fallout as well. Just filing

Bug#409905: Unresponsive ftp server freezes install

2008-02-19 Thread Marc Langer
This also happens when a direct http connection is dropped in
the firewall und no proxy was entered. I think it will be the same
if a default gateway is present but no connection to the internet
is accessible.

I had to kill the wget processes, which leads to error messages
that the installation did not succeed.

Please include an abort button to cleanly go back to the
mirror and proxy configuration.

Thanks,
Marc

The problem comes from the following symbols in libc.so.6

 l *UND* .hidden __nss_aliases_database
 l *UND* .hidden __nss_rpc_database
 l *UND* .hidden __nss_ethers_database
 l *UND* .hidden __nss_netgroup_database
 l *UND* .hidden __nss_shadow_database
 l *UND* .hidden __nss_publickey_database

Those symbols are glibc symbols that are not used within the reduced
libc. They are exported as undefined on all architectures, though they
are defined in libc_p.a.

On most architectures, they do not cause any problem, but on mips and
mipsel ld.so seems to be confused and segfault during the relocation
phase. Thiemo, do you have an idea about what can lead to segfault?

Also note that in Etch those symbols were also undefined, but not
hidden. I guess this is the reason why mklibs stopped working.

A quick workaround is to mark those functions as used by using the -u
options from gcc as it is done for other symbols. It only increase the
size of libc.so.6 by a few kilobytes, and I have tested that it actually
works correctly.

Multiple SATA disks, two OSs and booting problem

2008-02-19 Thread Tero Mäntyvaara

Hi,

I have got motherboard that has support for four (4) SATA devices. I
have installed Debian 4.0r2 AMD64 on filesystem witch has been build

on top of LVM system. LVM is on top of software-raid1 device md0 with
two SAMSUNG SP1614C (SATA) disks. Everything works well.

But if I connect two other disks (SATA2), there is volume group (named
VG1) on those disks and KnoppMyth OS installed on one partition of the
other disk, booting into Debian fails.

Further investigated: If I connect either of the two KnoppMyth VG1 disks
Debian boots well.

And while all disks connected booting into KnoppMyth goes well.

Malayalam is _not_ missing [1]. You probably started the installer in
the textual mode (newt interface) instead of in the graphical mode (gtk
interface). Display of the Malayalam script requires the graphical
interface.

Boot the installer (from a CD image) using installgui and you'll see
Malayalam listed.

Cheers,

No idea what it says (I'd guess keyboard selection), but this is after

Hey,
Looks like it can't find the right disks/partitions to boot from.
The order may be being re-arranged when you attach them all at once.
Could be an issue with identification, are you using device paths or
uuid's in grub?
On the subject of grub, what's your boot setup? Where is the boot manager
installed and what's in your menu.1st (or equiv non-grub) ?
If in doubt post your /boot/grub/menu.1st

Just a thought.
cheers,
Owen.

Hey,
Looks like it can't find the right disks/partitions to boot from.
The order may be being re-arranged when you attach them all at once.
Could be an issue with identification, are you using device paths or
uuid's in grub?
On the subject of grub, what's your boot setup? Where is the boot
manager installed and what's in your menu.1st (or equiv non-grub) ?

If in doubt post your /boot/grub/menu.1st

Just a thought.
cheers,
Owen.

Hi,

LILO has installed in system by default. Installation target was
/dev/md0 and I remember that there was some problems with that in
installer. Here is also content of the lilo.conf:

# /etc/lilo.conf - See: `lilo(8)' and `lilo.conf(5)',
# --- `install-mbr(8)', `/usr/share/doc/lilo/',
# and `/usr/share/doc/mbr/'.

# +---+
# |!! Reminder !! |
# | |
# | Don't forget to run `lilo' after you make changes to this |
# | conffile, `/boot/bootmess.txt' (if you have created it), or |
# | install a new kernel. The computer will most likely fail to |
# | boot if a kernel-image post-install script or you don't |
# | remember to run `lilo'. |

Please, go in your installed system and use the installation-report
script to send us a full installation report, that way we can get more
information about how things went there.

I'm not near the system for the next couple of days but will do that
when I get back - thanks for pointing that out.

I've checked base-installer code and it has code to handle hppa smp
machines. Probably 2.6.22 had a problem to enable your second
processor and then this might be fixed once we go to 2.6.24.

Well, historically, hppa has had problems with SMP kernels. AFAIK, the worst
of those have been fixed and SMP seems (in general) stable.

Filling a full installation report will allow us to check if this code
has issues or if it wasn't properly detected.

ok - will do. Expect that within a week.

thanks,
