Bug#484870: partman-crypto: Should warn about weak passphrase before the confirmation of the passphrase

2008-06-06 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: partman-crypto
Severity: wishlist

When the user chooses a weak passphrase, (s)he is warned about this but only
after confirming the passphrase.

It could be more logical to warn about too short passphrase before the
passphrase confirmation.

However, I wonder if we should add console-setup to the cyrillic task...

The "culprit" for installing console-cyrillic is tasksel, indeed (in
the "cyrillic" task).

I'll commit a change to remove it from the cyrillic task.

That means ppp-udeb is being run. Did you forget some hidden directory

This is just a reminder to myself that netcfg-dhcp's dhcp_retry
continues to offer to configure the network manually.

Fixing it would require changing the part of templates that said
'Configure the network manually' into its own template, unfuzzying all
translations, and only calling it up when not in a netcfg-dhcp
situation.

Or is there a better way?

I used to use Debian Woody's boot CD as a rescue CD.

I remember that the 'tar' command supports '-c' parameter in Debian Woody's
boot CD,
so that I can use it to backup my files, like the files in '/etc/' or whole '/'.
But I find that the '-c' parameter is not supported by 'tar' command in
Debian-Installer.
Please consider to support it. Thanks in advance.

Console-setup does not need console-cyrillic as both packages provide
similar functionality for Cyrillic languages. However Alexander
discovered a bug that was unknown to me. It is surprising that nobody
has reported this bug earlier. It is not reported even for the Ubuntu
version of the package even tough console-setup has been standard
there for quite a while.

I think I will be able to upload a fixed package very soon (next 1-2
days).

Either console-setup or console-cyrillic needs to be installed but not
both packages. Otherwise they will do the same job twice.

Bug#484799: busybox: mount -f should not mount

2008-06-06 Thread Michal Suchanek
Package: busybox
Version: 1:1.9.2-3
Severity: normal

The whole point of mount -f is to write to /etc/mtab I guess, at least
it's how it is sometimes used when the filesystem is mounted by other
means.

As I read the code mount in busybox sets some flag when mtab is used but
ignores the flag when mtab is not used.

It should just (or check that the mount *could* be done if it wants to
do something - like that the files/directories exist).

Attached patch should make bysybox exit when mount -f is used and mtab
is not compiled in.

Thanks

[RFC] Some love for partman-md v4

Well… We might want to think of the impacts on preseeding, guided
partitioning, modification of a partition table on which one of the
partition is used for LVM…

Given the current schedule, I wonder if we have enough time and power to
do proper testing.

Use case: I am reinstalling a system which has a separate encrypted,
/home partition.

I think it would be better if I could tell the installer how to use this
existing partition, even if its encrypted. But well, the question was
just meant to bring awareness of a possible issue in the future.

All of the issues you have pointed have been addressed. Thanks! :)

This would make entirely automatic installations through preseeding fail
if partman-md is loaded and previously existing software RAID devices
are detected. Sounds not really desirable to me… :(

I felt while writing the code that reusing mdcfg's template might not be
the best thing. I always feel clumsy when I need to write new ones, so
I took the easy path.

This new version of the patch introduces a new template, inspired by
partman-lvm/device_remove_lvm which displays all affected software RAID
devices and partitions at ounce.

The logic of device_remove_md() has been reworked accordingly.

To make it clear, are you saying "all RAID devices which use at least a
partition on the target device"?

Otherwise, I think we need to keep RAID devices only using other
devices. Use case: system on first disk, without RAID; /srv on other
disks, using RAID 5.

Indeed. We can just restart if at least one device has been removed.

Fourth version of the patch is attached. I hope it'll be the last. :)

Clean up the initialization of MD devices

The initialization of MD devices in partman previously diverged from what
others partman components are doing, resulting in quite few bugs and
really bad interactions with crypto setup.

 * Scanning for existing MD devices

During partman initialization, the init.d/md-devices script now load
kernel modules and scan for MD devices the first time it is started.

This script has been moved to be called before init.d/parted to have
existing RAID partitions listed on the first partitioner run.

I have made a first one by grepping through the source code. As
"apt-install" is used in code, we can't really think of automating the
process of creating such list.

The debian-installer team might probably be able to maintain a list in
its source repository. Would that be fine for the release-team?

Bug#484769: Latest version of busybox on unstable or experimental

2008-06-06 Thread Hector Oron
Package: busybox
Version: 1:1.9.2-3
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

BusyBox 1.10.3 version corrects some bugs, which makes it more
useful and it would help on our development. I would be happy to
package it and doing some sponsored (via Wookey or codehelp) upload to
experimental or unstable if you are not able to do it and i could be a
co-maintainer of this package as I am going through NM process.

Cheers

Bug#484748: debian-installer: Asks for Latin <-> Russian keyboard layout switch combination twice

2008-06-06 Thread Alexander E. Patrakov

Christian Perrier wrote:

reassign 484748 console-setup
retitle 484748 Should not need console-cyrillic for proper operation
thanks

Well, Anton pushed for console-setup to be used for Cyrillic
languages, so I guess he might have clues about this. The point seems
to be that c-s does not work alone from what you claim above

So, I prefer reassigning this to console-setup and get Anton's advice.

After some more research, the following facts came up:

1) The "unusable keyboard" bug affects the Alt+Shift and Ctrl+Shift combinations
(Alt+Shift is the default in MS Windows and thus is a popular choice)

2) After I press Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift (i.e., press Alt or Ctrl, press Shift,
release Shift, release Alt or Ctrl), the kernel seems to think that Alt (or
Ctrl) is still pressed (e.g., after pressing Alt+Shift, F2 switches to the
second virtual console or, after typing "cat" and pressing Ctrl+Shift, pressing
"O" produces "^O") until I switch the virtual console.

3) If I press this key combination as Shift+Alt or Shift+Ctrl (i.e., press
Shift, press Alt or Ctrl, release Alt or Ctrl, release Shift), it works as it
should.

4) Some presented options to switch layouts actually don't work (e.g., if I
configure LShift+RShift, this combination has simply no effect).
