retitle 251031 Should support removal of installation medium A very long time ago Joey Hess wrote: In an install from businesscard CD, the CD is not used after the udebs are loaded from it, and could be used for installing another machine in parallell. But it's mounted, and locked. It would be neat if somehow d-i knew the CD would not be needed anymore, and ejected it after loading the udebs. This is not really true (anymore?). In theory an anna-install can still be run at any time, and currently we do so in quite a few places (mainly partman). Other complication is that in several places the contents of /cdrom/.disk/ is checked and that is currently assumed to be available. It could still be done, but then we'd need to implement some kind of media check and prompt to reload before actually accessing the install medium. Having this would simplify for example multi-CD support. Cheers, FJP -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#490634: pkg-list: should exclude invalid providers for pseudo-packages
Package: debian-installer When a pseudo-package is detected util/pkg-list builds a list of providing packages, but currently it does not check if such providing packages are valid. There are at least two cases where this could/does cause problems: - wrong kernel flavor gets included for kernel module udebs - udeb is not valid for a subarch Example of the first is 'qcontrol-udeb Depends: input-modules'. This results in: pkg-lists: adding qcontrol-udeb pkg-lists: collecting dependencies for qcontrol-udeb pkg-lists: postponed satisfying dep on input-modules-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di | input-modules-2.6.25-2-orion5x-di for qcontrol-udeb [...] pkg-lists: adding input-modules-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di (chosen at random out of input-modules-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di input-modules-2.6.25-2-orion5x-di) pkg-lists: collecting dependencies for input-modules-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di pkg-lists: added kernel-image-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di for input-modules-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di pkg-lists: collecting dependencies for kernel-image-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di pkg-lists: added usb-modules-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di for input-modules-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di pkg-lists: collecting dependencies for usb-modules-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di pkg-lists: added kernel-image-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di for usb-modules-2.6.25-2-ixp4xx-di It should be possible to filter out such cases in pkgdeps() based on info available from apt-cache. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
Bug#490635: pkg-list: Should hardcode some preferred providers for pseudo packages
Package: debian-installer Severity: wishlist It would be nice if pkg-lists would be less random when choosing between for example bootstrap-base and live-installer when satisfying a dependency on the base-installer pseudo package. In almost all cases bootstrap-base is the correct choice, but live-installer will be selected. This mostly happens during development when building custom images for testing and using e.g. pkg-lists/local to include a new version of e.g. apt-install (which depends on base-installer) in the initrd. It should be possible to take such preferences into account while processing the 'while (@postponed)' loop. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Frans Pop [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: What about retasking the new virtio udebs into virtuali{s,z}ion (or just virt) and adding them there? That could work, but I suspect it could result in a dependency mess. You can either check /lib/modules/ver/modules.dep to see how bad it is or just try it. If these modules do not depend on anything much then this could be a good option. IIRC they don't depend on anything else. Ian can you give it a try? Other distros (and *bsd etc) would tend to call it either xen or xenpae, I think, rather than bigmem (which is something of a Debianism) -- what do you think of those names? I don't have any problem with either of those. As mentioned before, IMO that the fact it uses the -bigmem kernel is only incidental to its purpose. Main thing is to be clear to users. Hmm. You may also want to do a quick check of the manifest texts in the installer config from that perspective. I think xenpae is more appropriate since this does use the pae mode. -- O T A V I OS A L V A D O R - E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] UIN: 5906116 GNU/Linux User: 239058 GPG ID: 49A5F855 Home Page: http://otavio.ossystems.com.br - Microsoft sells you Windows ... Re: Etch and preseeding LVM custom lv and vg names

Unfortunately so far I've not had the time/energy to do that and there are other things with higher priority :-( So my question is, is there a partman-auto-lvm version in etch that I can use to allow me to set the names? and if not, can I build the lenny beta2 d-i, and use an etch pool to install the stable dist? I would like to have the cd self contained and not need the network. The last certainly is possible using debian-cd and in fact is the way we will create a special netinst CD for the Etch+1/2 release that is overdue. However, doing so yourself is far from trivial I'm afraid. It is possible without any adjustment to install Etch using a Lenny beta2 businesscard CD image. Just boot the installer with 'suite=etch' as extra boot parameter. That is however not self-contained but will install the target system using a network mirror. Re: Debian 4.0r3 for s/390, network install, maybe a problem with wget???
On Tuesday 08 July 2008, Ventura wrote: First of all, you can't use a repository with CDs because at least in S/390 plataform you don't have the debian-installer tree. This is the reason I received a message no kernel modules available in the first repository. That sounds possible. The s390 CD images are a bit strange anyway as they are not really intended to be installed from, more as alternative sources for after the installation. It is possible to boot the installer from CD, but you'll still be doing the same installation from the network as with a normal install using generic images. To make my external router to understand where is the tap0, I had to include one route through tun0. I did a lot of tests logged as installer in a shell at Hercules and could get small files from Internet using wget but only for files 1k (I don't know why). No idea here but it does not sound like a wget problem, nor a hercules problem. I use Hercules myself without any issues, both using a mirror on a different system in my local network and official Debian mirrors. This would be a question for the hercules mailing list maybe. But you should first recheck your networking setup. Another problem was with file system, xfs doesn't work, only ext3. I've never tried XFS on s390. If you can find out what exactly is wrong from the logs or by trying commands manually we can look into it. We'd at least need an installation report [1] with a more detailed description of the problem. Re: micro-evtd: udeb (arm armel only)
On Sunday 13 July 2008, Per Andersson wrote: Source and binary available for review at [0]. debian/rules: +Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, libc-udeb This is not correct. Dependencies on libraries should be added automatically through ${shlibs:Depends} during the build. You'll need to find out why that does not happen. The fact that this does not happen is a string indication there is something wrong with the package... Hmm. All that is included in sbin dir ATM is micro_evtd.command, which is a script. So is the real problem that micro_evtd and microapl are missing in the udeb? debian/micro-evtd-udeb.install: I changed the way hook scripts are installed for qcontrol in my last upload as dpkg-buildpackage complained about not being able to preserve file mode in the diff.gz. I now install the files from debian/rules. You may want to look at that as the missing permissions could cause problems when the package is built directly from source instead of from your local system. The dir /etc/micro_evtd in the udeb is currently empty. If it is not needed, it should just be removed. If not, you've got another missing file. Tip: to view the contents of your package immediately after building, use 'debc' (equivalent to using dpkg -I and dpkg -c); use 'debdiff' to view the difference between a previous version and your current one. I have added content to the udeb, it should be able to play sound and control led. Somehow I doubt it will without the missing binaries :-) Cheers, FJP signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Re: micro-evtd: udeb (arm armel only)
One more thing I'm afraid, and this is fairly structural: start-stop-daemon is not available in the D-I environment. I also have the feeling that micro_evtd.command is in general more elaborate then it needs to be. For udebs we try to limit scripts (unless they are also used in installed systems) to do only what they need to do and nothing more. Example: as the script will never be used interactively, having a usage function or the interactive bit in play_tune is unnecessary and a (minor) waste of memory. Re: [PATCHES] 686-bigmem/Xen enabled netboot images
On Sat, 2008-07-12 at 21:11 +0200, Frans Pop wrote: On Saturday 12 July 2008, Ian Campbell wrote: As these modules are only going to be used with the i386 -bigmem kernel and even only exist there, I wonder if we want them in kernel-wedge. They will eventually be needed for the amd64 kernels too, although probably not in time for Lenny. There's also a port of Xen to IA64 which is fairly active and just starting to go into the upstream kernel, again probably not for Lenny though. That's still only a minority of arches where it's actually used. Sure. I'll take them out of kernel-wedge and add to the i386 kernel udeb source directly. My patch to kernel-wedge is now trivially to serial-modules: -generic_serial +generic_serial ? (plus changelog etc). What about retasking the new virtio udebs into virtuali{s,z}ion (or just virt) and adding them there? That could work, but I suspect it could result in a dependency mess. You can either check /lib/modules/ver/modules.dep to see how bad it is or just try it. If these modules do not depend on anything much then this could be a good option. The xen-{blk,net}front.ko modules currently don't depend on any others so it should be fairly clean. What do you think? I guess I'd need to add this udeb to the pkglist for the i386 netboot. Currently there is 52k worth of modules in there and the xen ones would add another 45k. Currently adding the net one to nic-modules as I do now adds 26k with another 19k for the blk driver being loaded later. I've gone with EXTRANAME=netboot/xen. I decided that since non-PAE support is gone upsteam using e.g. xenpae would be redundant in the long run, so might as well drop it now. No need for the full set. Just base-installer and maybe kernel-wedge will do I think. We'll do quick checks of the final changes anyway based on the commit mails that get sent out. The kernel-wedge patch is now trivial as mentioned above. I've included the base-installer (on top of #490542, called bigmem.patch) and linux-kernel-di...patch and the main installer.patch again. I will comment out netboot-xen from MEDIUM_SUPPORTED until the udebs are uploaded. I've used the set trick which was recently removed from base-installer again. Bug#490382: netcfg: Wireless configuration issues with ath5k
On Sunday 13 July 2008, Frans Pop wrote: Below some additional info. This time with the AP set to broadcast the ESSID. It no longer sets the channel (at least not during initial configuration), but still fails completely. Quick update. Just tested with upstream 2.6.26-rc9 kernel and ath5k. Only in a normal system, not the installer. Some previously failing scenarios now work, and WEP works as well. Impression is that the behavior of the ath5k driver is a lot more consistent now with what netcfg expects and that the installer may well work a lot better for me now. That's next on the agenda. Both Glenn and I still feel that there is a lot of room for improvement in the general structure of wireless code in netcfg which should make it a lot less susceptible to deviations in behavior between drivers. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
Re: i386 pxelinux.cfg no-longer serial friendly!
Frans Pop wrote: Or is there a way I can do this myself using qemu? In that case I could probably do it myself. You can use something like -serial telnet:5000,server,nowait , and then telnet localhost 5000 to see the serial console. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#482092: Re: Bug#482092: XTS and LRW mode of operation
Hi, just few comments.. Max Vozeler napsal(a): Hi Alberto, On Tue, May 20, 2008 at 08:41:19PM +0200, Alberto wrote: Please add aes-lrw-benbi and aes-xts-plain to the list of available mode of operation. XTS is the upcoming standard. Thanks for the suggestion. I think offering those modes in partman-crypto is very desirable. XTS is definitely + Before we can do it we will need to make some non-trivial code changes though to account for the different key sizes that are valid in combination with those modes. The kernel Kconfig help suggests that for LRW we'd need to add 128 bits and for XTS to double the key size: aes-lrw-benbi: 256/320/384 bits aes-xts-plain: 256/384/512 bits I wonder how we should best handle this difference. We could try to offer the valid key sizes only after the user has chosen the iv-algorithm, but that is more involved because users may currently change parameters in any order. Perhaps we should just offer the regular key sizes (128, 192, 256 bits) and adjust them (adding 128 or doubling it) depending on the iv-algorithm selected. The latter seems more flexible, but may be surprising for people who are aware of the different requirements. They may wonder why they can select 128-bit AES with aes-lrb-benbi, for example. Do you think this could be a problem? IMO it's not good to hide any changes in crypto from the user. Even doubling the key without further notice. Maybe some hint/help/screen option to explain XTS-based mode. Another question comes to mind: Since XTS is considered to be the successor to LRW (at least for IEEE P1619 standard), are there reasons to offer any LRW modes? Are you aware of any practical advantages over XTS? I don't see any advantages here. XTS is claimed as more secure.. But still both modes have kernel status = EXPERIMENTAL. Therefore CBC should stay as less-secure/more-stable default option for the system encryption. Max Z. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? In Execute commands here the play) option is missing ;;. The indentation of ;; is inconsistent. Personally I always keep it level with the commands (i.e. +1 tab); you mostly have it level with options, except for the beep/led/play) options where they are level with commands. I initially had 'sleep 0.5' in qcontrol too, but it's not supported by busybox, so you need 'sleep 1'. Did you run lintian over the finished package? I think that's it :-) Cheers, FJP signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
