That doesn't prevent it from getting assigned an IP address via DHCP (it does, after all, receive the packets, since they are broadcast). But when it comes to actually transmit or receive IP packets, the broadcast address isn't exactly appropriate, and any attempt to fetch anything over IP fails. This is a problem I'm aware of, and I can't blame anyone for failing to support admittedly broken hardware out of the box. I know a workaround: Alt-F2, then manually set a MAC address in the NIC, then try again, which used to work (I obviously have to add a script to /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/eth0). Bug#411943: partman-lvm: size of new LVs must be given in multiple of 1024 instead of 1000
On Sunday 20 July 2008, I wrote: On Sunday 20 July 2008, Jérémy Bobbio wrote: The attached patch should fix the issue. Details in its header. Doesn't this introduce an inconsistency between what is input and what is displayed in the Current LVM configuration dialog? Consistency between D-I and commands given from shell is another factor to take into account. Fact is that LVM by default uses binary-based units while e.g. disk manufacturers and fdisk use SI units. Partman is currently consistent with that. It may not be internally consistent, but it may also be just what some users (e.g. experienced sysadmins) expect. The problem in this BR is basically that the units for the displayed default size currently do not match the how the units that are input are used, which definitely is a bug and one that your patch does seem to fix. But it could also be solved by having the proposed value displayed in binary-based units... This also somewhat clashes with Robert's patch in #471323, which goes the other direction. I'd much rather see an inventory of what partman does _as a whole_ and a proposal/discussion how we can make it consistent and clear to the user what units are used/expected/displayed for partman _as a whole_ than to introduce such random changes based on a single aspect of the problem. I do agree there is a (fairly big) consistency problem, but I'm not sure this is the way nor the time to fix it. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? On Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 01:47:17PM +0200, Frans Pop wrote: Why is the Continue button needed? Could an active Go back button be shown instead of the Continue that (after a warning) just kills the plug-in if it is clicked (the mouse is still active after all)? I need to think of a proper way to display a warning, but it sounds like a better idea. I had intended for the warning to be optional. I mainly feel that a graphical alternative to typing exit would be useful, and certainly more useful than a Continue button which only means you have exited, please confirm that you've already exited and we'll return to the installer proper (exaggerated). Ok, the behaviour I have implemented today: * When the terminal process exits, the plugin exit as well. * The Continue button has been replaced with a Go back button. * When pressed, the Go back button displays a confirmation message, with Cancel (default) and Continue button. Pressing the later exits. * Pressing Ctrl-Shift-Escape in the terminal is a shortcut result in the same behaviour as pressing the Go back button. After some testing, it feels indeed better. You must have something different as in the normal rescue case it does work correctly. I doubt including rescue in the initrd makes any difference, although I have not checked that. It really might make a difference. I don't see how any changes that I have done could affect the menu ordering! On another topic, I have been able to fix the Home/End keys. That was a side effect while trying to see if I could remove the dependency on ncurses completely. VTE uses ncurses to read terminfo files, if they are not accessible it falls back to its own internal termcap parser. Good news is that I have been able to completely remove the useless dependency on ncurses, as no terminfo files were accessible in the installer anyway. Fixing the Home/End keys was only a matter of tweaking the minimal termcap file shipped in libvte9-udeb. Current size numbers (with the last ttf-dejavu-mono-udeb): * initrd.gz: without: 13271k with: 13626k = + 355k * memory after boot: without: 49340k with: 49988k = + 648k * memory for the plugin: before the shell: 50424k during the shell: 51484k = + 1060k Last patchset attached. This will allow shells to be started inside the graphical installer like the other frontends. As the terminal widget is provided by VTE, the package depends on libvte9-udeb. hda x sda after boot the installation.
Hello, I have installed debian lenny i386 beta2, the installation was correctly and reboot, but it stays on boot an a message Wait please... after decompres linux image, I was edit the grub entry with 'e' and remove quiet option, the output says Waiting for root filesystem and stays here. I seen that my hd is an ide hard disk and my optic drive too, the installation set the grub for accesing hda partition but the boot kernel after installation set my drives to sda and scd0, like scsi emulation, so I set the grub entry to sda1 not hda1, the system now boot, after I set the /etc/fstab file for use sda names and scd0 for optic drive, then my system works very good. then i changeg my linux-image by an K7 image, the issue persist. Re: [RFC] Add support for shells in the graphical installer
Jérémy Bobbio [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: On Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 01:47:17PM +0200, Frans Pop wrote: Why is the Continue button needed? We are doing great progress on that, indeed. That is nice, indeed. Fixing the Home/End keys was only a matter of tweaking the minimal termcap file shipped in libvte9-udeb. hehe ... great :-) Current size numbers (with the last ttf-dejavu-mono-udeb): * initrd.gz: without: 13271k with: 13626k = + 355k * memory after boot: without: 49340k with: 49988k = + 648k * memory for the plugin: before the shell: 50424k during the shell: 51484k = + 1060k Last patchset attached. This is really impressive since it has low impact on the installer and really improves the user experience. I won't be able to try those patches myself in next days but I fully trust your and Frans judgement about it and if both agree I'd say to upload it as soon as possible to get a wider testing on that. -- O T A V I OS A L V A D O R - E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] UIN: 5906116 GNU/Linux User: 239058 GPG ID: 49A5F855 Home Page: http://otavio.ossystems.com.br - Microsoft sells you Windows ... OK. Not sure what went wrong then. I can't reproduce it here now either. Uploaded, together with general update to 2.6.25-7 for the kernel (only for arches that had already been updated) and addition of jffs2 modules for arm/armel orion5x. Great. Looks excellent. Doubt anyone will be using that key combo though :-) You must have something different as in the normal rescue case it does work correctly. I doubt including rescue in the initrd makes any difference, although I have not checked that. It really might make a difference. I don't see how any changes that I have done could affect the menu ordering! Here is the problem. You seem to have added a dep from rescue-check on di-utils-shell. As rescue mode depends on rescue-check, this causes the execute a shell option to always appear _before_ rescue mode. Dependencies overrule menu item numbers. On another topic, I have been able to fix the Home/End keys. That was a side effect while trying to see if I could remove the dependency on ncurses completely. Nice. On Saturday 19 July 2008, Jérémy Bobbio wrote: I have quickly reviewed all bug reports against these two packages and no bugs seem to mention this issue. Either the relevant installation reports were not sorted correctly or we can assume that it is a pretty minor issue and that our users did work around it themselves. This is not about users complaining about it, but about internal consistency. The locking infrastructure was added by David as part of p-crypto and then also added for new LVM devices. Bug#411943: partman-lvm: size of new LVs must be given in multiple of 1024 instead of 1000
On Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 01:39:59PM +0200, Frans Pop wrote: Consistency between D-I and commands given from shell is another factor to take into account. Fact is that LVM by default uses binary-based units while e.g. disk manufacturers and fdisk use SI units. Partman is currently consistent with that. It may not be internally consistent, but it may also be just what some users (e.g. experienced sysadmins) expect. LVM tools default that display sizes to binary units instead of SI units. So on a command line, IMHO, an experienced sysadmin would use other LVM tools to create PVs, VGs and LVs together with the ones that would display the current status. As most people rarely bother to specify --units M, I don't really see that as an issue. I'd much rather see an inventory of what partman does _as a whole_ and a proposal/discussion how we can make it consistent and clear to the user what units are used/expected/displayed for partman _as a whole_ than to introduce such random changes based on a single aspect of the problem. partman reference seems to be given by longint2human() and human2longint(), defined in lib/base.sh. Which is why I decided to use them to as the basis for calculation in the proposed patch. Cheers, -- Jérémy Bobbio.''`. Doesn't this introduce an inconsistency between what is input and what is displayed in the Current LVM configuration dialog? No. The units showed in the Current LVM configuration dialog are retrieved by using the --units M flag of lvm tools. The capital 'M' here specify that the unit should be in S.I. units, same as the rest of partman. I'm not sure that we should be fixing such minor issues at this point. Especially when it's so easy to get things subtly wrong or introduce new inconsistencies. It's not exactly minor, IMHO: while creating a new Logical Volume, you have to recalculate every other numbers by hand as all other components of partman uses S.I units instead of binary units.
