As far as I can say, there are two typical architecture: * Move to .deb images * Generalize and structure the .tar.gz files I think the best option is to generalize the tar.gz files also because there're a lot of people that uses those images on servers that aren't Debian based. Using a .deb file will make it harder (yes, I know how to extract it by hand but most people will take a while to get over it). I fully agree that we ought to have a standard way to provide the images and that those should have a /layout/ that makes easy to manage them all. please allow simple-cdd 0.3.10 into testing
simple-cdd 0.3.10 is blocked from migrating to testing, as it contains the simple-cdd-profiles udeb, which is not used by default in debian-installer. no changes were made to the udeb since the version in testing. no new issues have been reported, it closes a couple bugs, and has been in unstable 10 days. please consider unblocking simple-cdd 0.3.10. thanks! live well, vagrant -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#504721: Reason for console detection failure on Sparc Niagara
-- Forwarded Message -- From: David Miller da...@davemloft.net The reason this bug happens is because CONFIG_PROM_CONSOLE is enabled in the kernel. It unconditionally gets registered as a real console before the Sun Hypervisor console driver has a chance to register. The kernel takes whatever real console registers first, as the highest priority console (unless specified otherwise on the command line). This is why the test program that runs to determine the inittab getty settings doesn't see the console as a serial device. And no, using console=ttyS0 will not fix this problem on Niagara. On Niagara you would need to use console=ttyHV0. The only reasonable fix for this bug is to disable CONFIG_PROM_CONSOLE in the kernel configuration. Nobody should be enabling that kernel config option on sparc. It specifically creates this problem because unlike the framebuffer and serial console drivers, it does not have a way to know whether it should register or not. The serial and framebuffer drivers check the PROM indicated device node of the console device, and it only registers the device as the console if it matches the value of the 'output-device' PROM environment variable setting. Therefore, having CONFIG_PROM_CONSOLE enabled in the tree is going to do nothing other than constantly create problems and conflicts like this. It needs to be turned off, forever. --- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Bug#526862: console-setup: fail to configure Japanese keyboard
Package: console-setup Version: 1.32 Severity: normal After upgrading to sid from lenny, keyboard under X started acting like US 101 variants even though it should be OADG109A layout as Japanese. This maybe the same problem as bug#524233 since I had console-tools installed. Here is details: My system is Japanese, Linux console is still working fine. But under X: Shift-2 under Japanese should be while under X, it is @ like US. Shift-; under Japanese should be + while under X, it is : like US. ... I tried to fix it from Gnome GUI interface, it print error message and reuse to change keyboad type. I initially tried to reconfigure X itself but it did not work and realized console-setup maybe the cause. Since it is quite difficult to use system to report bug under sid, I booted from lenny system and run reportbug and dpkg-reconfigure as chroot. chroot $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow console-setup Cannot find /proc/version - is /proc mounted? invoke-rc.d: invoke-rc.d: WARNING: invoke-rc.d called during shutdown sequence invoke-rc.d: enabling safe mode: initscript policy layer disabled invoke-rc.d: WARNING: Can not find latin in jp. Cannot find /proc/version - is /proc mounted? invoke-rc.d: invoke-rc.d: WARNING: invoke-rc.d called during shutdown sequence Here, you can see 'Can not find latin in jp'. This is the error I saw under real sid too. This X problem seems to be rooted from console-setup and its database. (I remember dialogue under real unstable complained jp,jp does not exist blah, blah,... before this message. ) Since I could not find quick fix, I downgraded system since then. after-install troubles with package dependencies
Hi folks, Everytime I install Debain on a PC I have to enter aptitude to mark _many_ packages as automatically installed. If I don't, then they are kept forever, even if dependencies change. This was surely not the idea of handling package dependencies. Do you think it would be possible that d-i adds the missing automatically- installed flag to the database? Maybe it could install just a set of basic packages, and rely upon apt-get to add all the missing libraries and perl modules? Regards Harri signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
