Bug#561074: network-console: starting a shell terminates the connection

Can you reproduce the issue with a daily built image provided by us [1]?
It has 2.6.30 as kernel, so should work fine for you. You only have to
proceed as far as starting network-console.

If you cannot, I doubt there's anything wrong with network-console itself.

Thanks, I'll take a look. For reference it's getting as far as
calling udpkg (in /bin/network-console-menu) which then calls
/var/lib/dpkg/info/di-utils-shell.postinst. That is getting as far as
running db_input but then I'm kicked out.

installer debian/copyright issue

2009-12-15 Thread Otavio Salvador
Hello,

Currently debian/copyright points to /usr/.../GPL as license however
it is now pointing to GPL v3 license text. Is this intended? I'd
prefer to point it to a direct version of it to avoid any confusion.

Any objection regarding changing it to point to GPL-3 file?

IMO the licence is GPL-2 or higher (most of the code was developed when
GPL-2 was active), so the link should probably be to GPL-2.
The copyright file should be clarified in that respect.

Bug#561008: console-setup: approximations for 'toilet -f future' symbols look different before and after X

2009-12-15 Thread Anton Zinoviev

The equivalent command is 'showcfont' but it doesn't work on my machine
  (outdated version of Debian unstable).

I had tried with 'showcfont', but I thought it didn't do what you
wanted. Instead of telling me the name of the used font (as I
expected), it wrote a complete table with all the gliphs and codes.

Well, I am not able to be sure the font has not changed, just by
 looking at this table!

Yes, if the font is the same you can not be sure that it has not changed but
sometimes if it has changed you can be sure that it has changed. :)

In your case the font has not changed, so there is no need of more tests.

I suppose that only the horizontal lines are broken (the vertical are
  OK)?

 Bingo!
 You guessed!

Then it seems this bug must be reassigned to some of the x server video
drivers.
What is the type of your videocard? Can you attach the contents of
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
What happens if you don't use Ctrl+Alt+F1 but rather exit X the normal way?

In order to work with 9x16 and 9x14 fonts the video card does a magic: for some
of
the symbols (the pseudographic symbols) it uses the 8-th bit in each line as
9-th
bit. This magic is due to the fact that even the most modern cards are
emulating
the old VGA hardware that was developed 20 years ago when only the 8-bit
technologies were cheap. Somehow X leaves the videocard in a mode when it
doesn't
use the 8-th bit as 9-th and leaves the 9-th bit empty.

As far as lat1u-16 is concerned, please note that it has always had
this problem (broken horizontal lines): that's why I labeled it as a
 compromise solution.

I suppose this was because of the way this font was loaded. I think if you put
FONT='lat1u-08.psf.gz' in /etc/default/console-setup the lines will not be
broken.

If you start using framebuffer all lines will display correctly but the console
will use 8x16 and 8x14 fonts instead of 9x16 and 9x14. I don't know how the
problem
you are experiencing can be fixed in the regular text mode.

This is a verbatim copy of the GPL v2. I don't see any added text.

The problem of linking to GPL is that it points to latest

This is intentionally. The GPL v3 is completely applicable to the code.
There was a large discussion in the past about this and according to my
memory the conclusion was to use always refer to the latest version for
all the or later code.

Someone can choose to release a d-i fork as GPL-3 but the code from
that moment and afterward will be GPL-3 or later, not GPL-2 or later.

This would not make any difference. This reference to the common
licenses is only a way to avoid having a copy everywhere. The exact
version with or without or later clause needs to be described
seperately.

Bug#561283: debootstrap: honor --components when using mirror_style 'main'

2009-12-15 Thread Andres Salomon
Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.20
Tags: patch

I have a mirror that requires mirror_style 'main' (because the top-level
Release file lacks an md5sum list for Packages). However, when using
a mirror_style of 'main', the COMPONENTS list is hardcoded to 'main'.
This is fine if we're not specifying a component list via command
line. However, if we're passing debootstrap --components=foo,bar,baz,
it should really be attempting to use those components.

This patch updates download_main_indices to respect --components.

If you can tell us exactly what is needed to support the internal

(some kernel module probably?), we'll be happy to include it.

Does the installed system support the internal keyboard? If it
does, then a

start could be to compare the module list and/or the syslog from the
installer and the installed system.
You can find logs from the installation in /var/log/installer.

(We cannot do this ourselves as it's likely nobody active on the D-

has the hardware.)

In the installed system the internal keyboard is properly supported.
After comparing installer-lsmod und lsmod of installed system it
looks like

the missing kernel-module is 'hid_apple'.

See the attached 'diff -y installer.lsmod running.lsmod'.

Bug#444453: E: Unimplemented function with large strings

When I use debconf-set to set a really long string, I get the message
E: Unimplemented function. Apparently the string has to be longer
than ~1024 bytes and contain newlines:

Fixing this will involve:

  1) teaching cdebconf to handle the escape capability, as implemented
  in debconf;

  2) teaching debconf-set to use it.

As it stands, shoving data that contains newlines through debconf-set
breaks the debconf protocol, since the data after the newline is
interpreted as a new command.

The config of the D-I kernel is identical to the config of the

usage including the file will not be included in images.

Toggle through different keyboard layout are incorrect when three
layout are set.
   Toggle through layout reproduce this:
   first,second,third,second, array repeat

Now I see that maybe this is not the best possible cycle. Do you
think
that it will be an improvement if I change the layout switch cycle to
be
 first-second-first-third-first-second-first-third- and so on?

Yes it would be better.
