installer DMA issue

2010-12-09 Thread Michal Filka
Hi all,

I have a problem when installing Debian Lenny on a Motorola blade.
This particular blade has a hardware issue. It incorrectly reports DMA
support for CF slot. I tried to boot the installer in Expert mode with
ide-core.nodma=... but without any effect. cat /proc/ide/hdc/settings
still reports DMA usage for the CF slot. Disabling DMA over
/proc/.../hdc didn't help either. Is there any other way how to
disable DMA and force PIO in Debian installer or I have to build a
kernel for the installer without DMA support?

Thank you.
Michal Filka

Bug#606395: [G-I][squeeze-d-i-beta2] wrong keyboard layout in console (correct in X)

 That's actually expected: we didn't want to switch back to the text

 the X server). But we should keep that on the TODO list, yes.

As far as I can remember on the virtual consoles there is a text saying
something like Press ENTER to activate this console. I don't know
what program is displaying this text but isn't it possible to change the
same program to run setupcon just before the shell?

If for some reason this is impossible, then one can create the following
helper script:

===
#!/bin/sh

setupcon
exec /bin/ash
===

and run it instead of a shell.

Or if even this is impossible, then the installation manual should
mention that the users can use 'setupcon' to configure the keyboard on
the text consoles.

As we are close to release Squeeze, it would be a good time to test
the Beta2 of installer on this machine and see if it has those
problems too.

Could you do that?

Bug#606110: installation-report: gtk installer fail to start with PXE boot of Dell Latitude D505

2010-12-09 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
I discussed this issue with jcristau and wferi a few days ago. It is
not easy to know how to debug this, but one idea is to modify the
initrd.gz content load netconsole and use this to get kernel messages
from the crash. When the system crash, the keyboard is dead (Alt-F4
or Alt-Ctrl-F4 do not work), and there seem to be no way to get
information out at this point.

To set up a netconsole, code like this would need to be added
somewhere, for example in /lib/debian-installer-startup.d/ before
starting X:

  modprobe netconsole netconsole=@/,@1.2.3.4/00:11:22:33:44:55

1.2.3.4 is the target ip, where an udp receiver need to be set up and
00:11:22:33:44:55 is the gateway mac, if needed. I hope to find time
to set up such test, but do not expect it to happen any time soon. :(

Christian Perrier mentioned on IRC that he is also using a D505 as a
test laptop, and he do not have the same problem with g-i. He do not
use PXE, but I do not belive that matter. I tried to boot a isohybrid
ISO image from a USB stick, and it had the same problem with g-i.

Happy hacking,

Bug#606515: Preseed installation does not wait for network to be ready

2010-12-09 Thread Floris Bos
Package: network-preseed
Version: 1.41

We are experiencing problems automatically installing Debian Lenny on a number
of dedicated servers using PXE and preseed.
Our setup works correctly with some hardware configurations, while others give
a Failed to retrieve the preconfiguration file error message.

If we manually press Continue and tell Debian installer to fetch the
preconfiguration file a second time from the menu, installation does work
properly.

I suspect the reason it does not work the first time is that Debian installer
does not bother to wait before the network link is ready, before attempting to
fetch the preconfiguration file.
When I press alt-F4 and look at the messages it shows:

==
23:15:29 main-menu[1624]: INFO: menu item 'network-preseed' selected
23:15:32 kernel: eth0: Link is up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex Flow control: none
==

So if I understand the messages correctly the network-preseed routine is
executed 3 seconds before the link is actually up?

We assign a static network configuration to the servers using boot parameters
like this:

==
kernel http://INSTALL-SERVER/main/installer-
amd64/current/images/netboot/debian-installer/amd64/linux
netcfg/choose_interface=auto debian-installer/locale=en_US kbd-
chooser/method=us console-keymaps-at/keymap=us netcfg/disable_dhcp=true
netcfg/get_ipaddress=$ip netcfg/get_netmask=$netmask
netcfg/get_gateway=$gateway netcfg/get_nameservers=127.0.0.1
netcfg/get_hostname=$hostname netcfg/get_domain= preseed/url=http://INSTALL-
SERVER/kickstart.php/debian-preseed

(where $ip $netmask $gateway and $hostname is filled in with the information of
the server being provisioned)
==

I am trying to boot from a raid 1 (mirror) set, md2 = /boot,  md0 =
/swap, md1 = /. See above for details.

I installed the GRUB boot loader to the master boot record.
Finish the installation : Installation complete, so it is time to boot
into your new system...
The hardware post and bios progress ok.
When the bios hands over to continue the ipl from a hard disk it seems
unsuccessful, it  just waits.

*** This is where the install fails. It does not boot up into the
newly installed system. ***

I repeated the install up to, but not setting passwords, to the dd-mm
(Debian Installer-Main Menu) to:
Check the CD-ROM(s) integrity. (On the same target machine.)

Integrity test successful. The CD-ROM is valid.
The squeeze di b2 i386 Bin-1 dvd integrity passed ok.

Thank you for any help to get my raid 1 booting. Regards, McTech.

boot parameter interface=auto can't adaptation the correct NIC

2010-12-09 Thread Qin Bo
hi all:
   I use squeeze Nov 6 build iso to install, i had three network
interface card, a onboard NIC and two stand alone NIC is intel e1000,
   and e1000 1st(eth1) is plug a cable, e1000 2nd(eth2) and
onboard(eth0) is not, i want to auto configure the NIC which plug cable (at
this is e1000 1st, eth1),
  so i write interface=auto as boot parameter, but when get ip from dhcp
server, the installation can't get ip. when i configure network manually,
  found the ip configure onboard NIC, that is say the ip is configure on
eth0 not eth1. any idea? Or may be is a bug? If i want to auto configure the
NIC which plug cable, how to?

best regards

Qin Bo
