I asked about busybox several times, last [1] was in December after
I tried to sort out some old bugs which were in BTS for years. I had
two questions: how to proceed further (giving some examples) and one
very small, is the work I'm doing (closing old bugs) okay. So far,
I've got lots of silence, which apparently is supposed to be large
enough to deal with :(

At this point I think we should bring this to debian-devel@ at least,
since busybox is important package (especially for the installer) and,
according to BTS, it isn't maintained for many years.

I'm very interested to help or maintain it myself, -- I maintain local
copy for years already.

I'd prefer to note remove software from packages in stable that users
could already expect to get installed. #611951 can wait until wheezy.

Any changes to desktop tasks are inherently dangerous, the KDE CD
was barely made to fit at the very last minute (by dropping the
release notes from it). So while I'm sad that #610790 didn't get fixed
in squeeze (accessability is important), someone would need to do a lot
of checking to get that in.

This seems important to allow stable to debootstrap unstable going
forward.

I had made calls for fixes on debian-bsd, but very few people could help
to fix things (and they had little time available to spend on it).

Ideally, please send a patch against

svn://svn.debian.org/d-i/trunk/manual

(modify the en/ directory, don't necessarily care about the xml stuff,
I'll handle that). You can check the result yourself by going to build/
and running

./buildone.sh kfreebsd-i386 en pdf

for instance, and see the result in build.out/

If you could take the time to fix the whole manual, that'd be helpful :)
Basically, what needs fixing is at least:

- hardware support
- boot procedures
- configuring encrypted volumes
- supported partition options
- recommended partition scheme
- device names
- an equivalent to linux devices

Debian GNU/kfreebsd Installation Guide: Installation from HDD

2011-02-13 Thread Kostya Berger
Hi everyone :D.

I've tried following the steps from the Debian kfreebsd installation guide's
section for installation from Hard Drive/Existing unix/linux system -- which is
found at
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/kfreebsd-i386/apds02.html.en
and have found the most essential steps described there to be absolutely
impossible to follow, but I've found the CORRECT way of doing the same thing.

Where do I submit my corrections? Is it OK to send the brief summary to this
mailing list? In addition to my blog, where I'm going to publish it anyway?
This mailing list seems to be the only place among those mentioned at
www.debian.org.

Thanks for answering,
Kostya

help with busybox packaging

2011-02-13 Thread Cristian Greco
Dear list,

[CCing Bastian as he is actually listed as Uploader of the package]

I'd like to help with the maintenance of busybox in Debian, e.g.
packaging the latest 1.18.x release, dropping patches already merged
upstream and help with general bug triaging.
I think it would be great to start by pushing the packaging work to a
repository, as it happens for most of the packages maintained by the
debian-boot list.

Please let me know if there are any objections and/or suggestions.

Hope my proposal will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm not used to patching the installation guide, so here's a mail.

(We have some patches floating around, which need a bit of polishing.)

Some other pages reference G-I as well.

production since Thu, 27 Nov 2008 17:46:21 +. Over 2 years.

Maybe Debian could follow?

Of course, someone with a G5 should test it.

I can't. Floppy drive does not work.

There is nothing special in instalation log - the boot is cd is missing
CMD64x kernel module.

s/maybe/certainly which is why reporting the bug against xorg would
have been a better idea as it would have given Xorg maintainers the
information they need.

Could you provide the Xorg log?

Bug#613208: No Kbd/Mouse/Display after 6.0.0 Upgrade/Installation

2011-02-13 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: installation-reports
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

First I tried to upgrade, after this failed I tried a clean install:
same Problem

Starting the recovery console works, but starting Xorg hangs the
computer again: Messy graphical display,
Mouse and Keyboard dead.
Maybe a xserver problem withe the ATI Rage 128 graphic card, the upgrade
from Lenny to Squeeze worked
on an even older PC with an ATI Mach64 grapic card

Package: inn2
Version: 2.4.5-5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The inn system doesn't even start after installation. There are plenty
of files with the wrong ownership and permissions per inncheck (see
output below). Running "inncheck -f -perm | sh" fixes it and then
inn starts and is usable. It seems running inncheck should be part of
the post-install script, or the install scripts should set the ownership
and permissions of the files correctly.

If your motherboard hardware matches [1] then your Realtek network card
requires non-free firmware which is not distributed in the Debian CDs.
But the installer provides a way to load external firmware, please see details
in the manual [2].
If this is the case you may need the package firmware-realtek, with is part of
the non-free section.

For deeper analysis we will need the (gzipped) installation log [3].

has caused the Debian Bug report #238388,
regarding Allows to modify partition tables of disk with used partitions and no
warning is issued that the kernel will not be able to reread the partition
table. I suppose that the best fix for this is: 1. warn the user that the disk
is used so a reboot will be required; 2. when the partitioning finishes
displays a messages that the system should be rebooted and exits to the main
menu of the installer.

Comments/Problems:

The installation just worked. A couple of minor complaints about partman:
- I installed from usb media, and partitioned the disk manually. So
I was quite surprised to see my usb keychain on the list of
partitionable hard drives. I don't think a user wants to format the
  disk he's installing from... :)
- On the final question where it asks if you want to proceed with
partitioning/formatting/mounting, it should probably print a summary
of the changes it is about to make to the hd or, at least, a summary
of the partitions it is about to wipe clean. Just to be sure a newbie
doesn't delete its windows partition by mistake :)

Other than that, it was flawless. Great work, people!

Since you reported this bug a lot has changed in the installer and on it's
partitioning.
On current release (Debian 6.0 Squeeze) it asks you to save the changes done
in partitioning and the changes in partitioning are kept.

Feel free to try and report any issues against current installer.

Comments/Problems:

Partition hard drives:

For this installation, I was trying to put all filesystems on LVM.

I created a single primary partition and set it to be an LVM physical volume.
I left hda5 alone as it was mounted for the hd-media install.

I chose to configure LVM and tried to create a volume group, but it said no
physical volumes were found. Console 3 says:
pvscan -- no valid physical volumes found
So I ran
  pvcreate /dev/hda1
in a shell, and it let me configure LVM and then create the file systems.

Install base system:

When the base system install reached the kernel, I chose
kernel-image-2.4.25-1-686. Installation failed with error
mkinitrd: constituent device /dev/vg00/root does not exist!

(cf bug 237466).

So I started again, and while the base system installation paused to offer me
a choice of kernel, I did the following:
  mkdir /target/dev/vg00
  cd /target/dev/vg00
  mknod group c 109 0
  mknod root b 58 0
  mknod var b 58 1
  mknod usr b 58 2
  mknod home b 58 3

  chroot /target
  apt-get install lvm-common
  apt-get install lvm10
  vgscan

(This also brings in binutils, file, and libmagic1.)

This time the kernel installed without errors and the base system install
completed.

Then I ran
  apt-get install devfsd
inside the chroot, because a debconf note in one of the lvm packages advised it.

Install boot loader:

When it gave me a dialog asking where to install grub, I chose to cancel and
install lilo instead, because I needed support for booting from an LVM volume.

I chose to install lilo from the main menu. I accepted the default selection
for root as /dev/vg00/root. This installation appeared to complete
successfully. But I didn't see an /etc/lilo.conf in the target afterwards, so
I wrote my own and ran lilo by hand:

boot=/d

Sqeeze doesn't install

2011-02-13 Thread Frank Richards

Hi

Have just built a box with a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard.

Live dvd runs but install fails and internet is disconnected on failure.

Both sqeeze amd64 disc 1 and squeeze amd64 net install fails with :
module i82365 not found
and rt 1816 for r8169 missing.
system is then attempting to read fd0 which is not installed

Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem?

Please advise

regards Frank

Comments/Problems:

I am on a university network that requires user authentication (via an
html page) on boot, so I was unable to do a network install because
there was no way for me to login in the debian-installer.

1. Might I suggest adding w3m as an optional installer module, at the
very least for the netinst image, so users can authenticate and proceed
with the install. Perhaps this is possible by using the rescue mode of
the CD, but I do not could I have done that in the rescue mode before
proceeding with the intall?

2. After installation I had no mirrors in my /etc/apt/sources.list
(aside from security.debian.org, commented out). Instead of omitting
the mirror when it is unreachable, perhaps ask the user whether or not
he/she would like the chosen mirror added as a commented-out entry in
sources.list.

Other comments:
I used the Expert non-gui install, and everything else worked perfectly.
:)

Version checks are turned off for proposed-updates. At point release time at
latest we'd push the squeeze packages to testing and unstable, though, if it
would cause squeeze to be newer otherwise.
