setting a hostroute during installation

2011-07-20 Thread Bert Kaempfert
Hello,

our machines are configured to be in rather small subnets. The internet gateway
usually is not in the same subnet. The installer doesn't allow this.

Our current approach is to leave the gateway blank, then switch to the console
and manually route add, first a hostroute to the gateway, then the
gayteway itself. After installation, we place two up route add lines in the
interfaces file.

Is there a better way?

Regards,
Schnobs

You can use this command:

ip route add default via $ip_address dev $interface onlink

but I'm not sure it's supported in d-i -- most likely not.

 Is there a better way?

I think your setup is not right. Yes it works, and linux allows
you to have more weird setups too -- like pretending that ethernet
is a pointopoint interface like ppp -- by using exactly the same
device route mechanism too, but it is not how networks are
designed to function.

It is something like complaining that in order to overclock your
CPU too much you have to open your PC case and move some jumper
on a motherboard - yes the CPU works after that, yes it has enough
protection features to not melt down due to overheating, but it
is not its normal mode of operation. Maybe not a fair comparison
but it shows an idea.

Thanks,

/mjt

As the installer doesn't support hostroutes, I guess I'll have to run a command

Indeed (but I couldn't check when I helped you out sending this bug

translated to Serbian (as part of Debian Installer).

So, I'm afraid this very initial work won't be used as is. Hence, I'm

Hi!

As udpkg does not support bzip2 compression, it sounds like a bad idea

It's not a huge deal for libpng12-0-udeb as it is not usually

Bug#592550: support for SSH-Key authentication (Supports Eucalyptus and Amazon EC2)

2011-07-20 Thread Kyle Moffett
On Jul 19, 2011, at 19:22, Charles Plessy wrote:
 Le Wed, Aug 11, 2010 at 07:58:04PM -0400, Kyle Moffett a écrit :

The modified installer now retrieves a public-ip-url and displays that
address in the console output instead of the IP found on the network
interface. This correctly interoperates with Eucalyptus and Amazon EC2.

In those environments you would use the following bit of preseed:

  d-i network-console/password-disabled boolean true
  d-i network-console/public-ip-url string \
http://169.254.169.254/2007-01-19/meta-data/public-ipv4
  d-i network-console/public-key-url string \
http://169.254.169.254/2007-01-19/meta-data/public-keys/0/openssh-key

I'm also in the process of working on a small Debian-Installer patch to
automatically prepare a partially-preseeded D-I image following those
 conventions.

I've built a modified network-console with this patch into a slightly
patched Debian-Installer and successfully used it to begin a network
install on an Amazon EC2 instance.

Dear Kyle and Debian Installer team,

this would be a very interesting feature. Since the Amazon EC2 can boot on
custom kernels, it looks like that with this patch (or using Petter's
workaround), it would be possible to prepare an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) of
Debian-Installer itself, boot it from GRUB (through Amazon's kernels using
PVGRUB and preseed it via initrd, in order to install Debian on an Amazon
Elastic Block. Is that what you have tried ?

That is exactly what I have done.

The actual construction of the AMI containing the Debian-Installer is a bit of
a pain; I have a shell-script wrapper around the Amazon EC2 tools in order to
do marshall it into the official EC2 format, but the patches necessary to make
the SSH Console and Debian-Installer play nicely were surprisingly small.

Basically, I created a new Debian-Installer image variant with a built-in
preseed file containing references to the standard Amazon EC2 infrastructure
for loading SSH keys and downloading additional preseed from EC2 user-data.

I will see if I don't have 15 minutes some time soon to dust off those patches
to update and resubmit them.

Cheers,
Kyle Moffett

Bug#634874: Please add error for udebs that contain non gziped tarballs

2011-07-20 Thread Luk Claes
Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.1
Severity: important

Hi

udpkg (the dpkg equivalent within d-i) does only support gziped tarballs. So it
does not support data.tar.bz2 and similar.

It would be good if there could be an autoreject for these to avoid broken
daily/weekly images and uninstallable udebs.

Proposal:

Tag: udeb-contains-non-gzip-tarballs
Severity: serious
Info: This udeb contains non-gzip control or data tarballs.
udpkg, debian-installer's dpkg equivalent, does not support non-gzip tarballs
which means udebs that contain them won't be installable. This can also break
the daily or weekly d-i images.

Cheers

Luk

2011-07-20 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

Christian, Alexander's idea was actually to lively modify his
OpenDocument presentation and not BabelBox:

However, I have anyway added your replies to the wiki page, I still
think it could be useful if we can do some stuff to BabelBox as well:

without having to edit it (it being the babelbox), I don't think
so, but an external script that would make this happen is probably
 possible.

This is definitively something we want if we think that the BabelBox in
the Debian Events Box should be installed once and no more modified
(obviously if the d-i version is still OK and bug-free).

As it is on the wiki page, my idea would be to have a script to setup
the BabelBox from scratch, thus a script to modify the two parameters
above would be welcomed as well ;-)

 This, I'm less sure about..:)

Maybe this could be done providing the user comments offline as a text
file and then an external script called by cron would choose randomly
which one (or, better, a group of them) to show. Obviously, IMHO this
is not a high priority.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

As the installer doesn't support hostroutes, I guess I'll have to run a

installation I need to run a command immediately after netcfg -- how do I do
 that?

I think you have to create your own udeb with the mentioned ip-command
and run it just after netcfg.

Have a look at this to find the right menu item number:

I would use simple-cdd for creating a custom installation CD.
