Bug#635478: debian-installer: Enable VMware modules on installer images.
Subject: debian-installer: Enable VMware modules on installer images. Package: debian-installer Severity: wishlist *** Please type your report below this line *** Hi. For quite a while now, the linux-image-* packages have had support for the VMware modules such as vmxnet3 and vmw_pvscsi. However, the daily builds for the Debian installer do not. It would be very handy if at least the vmxnet3 and vmw_pvscsi modules were enabled by default in the businesscard/netinstaller ISO files. That way, new virtual machines created on VMware ESX/ESXi can use the VMXNET3 network adapter; and a Paravirtual SCSI controller on the boot drive. Without these modules, both the network and hard disk can't be detected at install time unless the slower E1000 network adapter and LSI SCSI controllers are used instead. The E1000 network adapter can easily be changed to a VMXNET3 adapter after the install, but the Paravirtual SCSI change on the boot device is non-trivial. I copied some hooks from another repository in the d-i area, and Otavio helped me configure those hooks a few days ago here at debconf. But I didn't see any documentation as to how this is supposed to work, and it's perfectly possible that I missed the obvious somewhere. Anyone else here who knows what should really be done? Bug#572939: marked as done (Busybox lacks switch_root command)

Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 572939: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=572939 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: busybox Version: 1:1.14.2-2 Severity: normal Hi, please add the switch_root command to Debians busybox that the linux Documentation/filesystems/ramfs-rootfs-initramfs.txt describes. Since it is impossible to get rid of libc6 in the initramfs I looked into getting rid of klibc instead. But that also is practically impossible. The rootfs used by initramfs does not allow for mount --bind/--move and therefore the old pivot_root way of switching from initrd to real root does not work. pivot_root always returns an error. The new way involves deleting all files in the rootfs and then mounting the real root to / and exec-ing /sbin/init. Which is basically impossible to do with a shell script. The klibc provides a run_init binary to do this but eglibc has no equivalent. Busybox is supposed to have a switch_root command but under Debian it does not. So you are left with needing run_init + klibc or leaving cruft being in the rootfs and wasting the memory it takes up. It worked in my environment, though I might have not considered all use cases. regarding debootstrap you can preseed it using: d-i base-installer/debootstrap_script string squeeze This ought to work. Great, thanks for the tip. I will give it a try, looks like it is going to save me another hacked package. Using all disks as one VG
Hi all, I'm struggling with creating a recipe that creates a /boot partition on the first disk and creates one large VG from all other disks (and adds partitions to that VG, of course). There doesn't seem an option to do this without knowing beforehand which disks are available in the disk. I'm however trying to create a very generic recipe for use on KVM guests that use multiple disks. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've tried simply doing something like: d-i partman-auto/disk /dev/vda /dev/vdb /dev/vdc /dev/vdd /dev/vde /dev/vdf But that doesn't seem to help. Also, the following doesn't work either (on Squeeze): d-i partman-auto-lvm/new_vg_name vg But I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct debconf name. Lastly, I seem unable to find any guide that explains the available options during preseeding for partman(-auto, etc.). Is there one somewhere? Bug#635336: debian-installer: USB install: fails to "mount CD"
Package: debian-installer Severity: normal (daily build from July 22) First, the documentation for installing from USB is unclear whether you're supposed to copy the contents of the CD to the FAT filesystem (ignoring symlink problems), or just dump the .iso image to the root of the filesystem. I did both just to be sure. Boot and initial steps of d-i go just fine. However, it later fails at the "Detect and mount CD-ROM" stage. The machine happens to physically have one, it's just empty. Trying to skip the stage doesn't work. Only manually doing: mount -tvfat /dev/sdb /cdrom will let the installation to continue. Pre-squeeze images in January did not have this problem. The machine I installed then did not physically have a CD or DVD drive at all though, so this might be a factor. (Just got to the DebConf, so I can't try to start d-i on the old machine. I do have the one that fails, so you can contact me in person.) -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.39-2-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#617943: debian-installer: isolated "make build_netboot" fails due to missing 2.6.32 modules

The installer itself, sometimes, need modifications or fixes to be able to handle newer kernel versions so the version that is hard-coded on those is the version that is supported by the installer. It is not only a matter of recompile installer against the new kernel (sometimes this works by this is not guaranteed). Another important point is that there are architectures that use different kernels depending on the subarch (e.g armel uses iop32x, kirkwood and others) and dynamically it is more difficult to handle this. Specifically about the patch it is incomplete since it doesn't handle all the architectures thus we can't take it. Friendly, -- Otavio Salvador O.S.
