Bug#635478: debian-installer: Enable VMware modules on installer images.

2011-07-25 Thread Jim Barber
Subject: debian-installer: Enable VMware modules on installer images.
Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Hi.

For quite a while now, the linux-image-* packages have had support for
the VMware modules such as vmxnet3 and vmw_pvscsi.

However, the daily builds for the Debian installer do not.
It would be very handy if at least the vmxnet3 and vmw_pvscsi modules
were enabled by default in the businesscard/netinstaller ISO files.

That way, new virtual machines created on VMware ESX/ESXi can use the
VMXNET3 network adapter; and a Paravirtual SCSI controller on the boot
drive.

Without these modules, both the network and hard disk can't be detected
at install time unless the slower E1000 network adapter and LSI SCSI
controllers are used instead.

The E1000 network adapter can easily be changed to a VMXNET3 adapter
after the install, but the Paravirtual SCSI change on the boot device
is non-trivial.

Regards,

Bug#545933: More information

2011-07-25 Thread Torsten Landschoff

On 07/23/2011 06:43 PM, Otavio Salvador wrote:

Please provide the output of lsusb with the keyboard connected so we
can identify the required kernel module for inclusion.
I do not remember which keyboard I connected back at the time I
commented on this bug. I connected my good old Cherry PS/2 keyboard
after installation was complete, after using a spare keyboard during
installation.

If needed I can check if the problem still applies today with a random
USB keyboard. I am quite sure that the kind of keyboard does not really
make a difference.

It is likely that the keyboard was the one that came with the mouse I am
currently using, so here is the relevant lsusb output:

Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver

I guess the kernel module is hid_logitech.

Greetings, Torsten

Seems like it's Priority: required (and dependencies) + binutils (for
the fakechroot variant). debootstrap uses in_target dpkg for the rest,
from a quick look at the sid script.

Trying, but:

wouter@vasks:~/d-i-scripts/togit$ sh -x ./hooksetup.sh
+ set -e
+ cd /git/d-i
+ cd /git/d-i/aboot-installer.git
+ echo aboot-installer.git
+ sed s/\.git$//
+ proj=aboot-installer
+ cat
+ chmod 755 hooks/post-receive
chmod: changing permissions of `hooks/post-receive': Operation not permitted

I just manually called the individual commands in that script so they
would run on partman-nbd only, instead. Hope that solves it.

Bug#633725: debian-installer: On IBM x3650 M3 debian installer, language selection broken

I have the same issue, with two current Supermicro Intel Servers. Had it
with an earlier Squeeze installer version, too, so it's not a recent
change that causes the bug.

Some overflow when judging the available memory perhaps?

Only shown on big endian architectures. Probably best to replace
 17 XZ_MAGIC1a = ((0xfd * 256 + '7') * 256 + 'z') * 256 + 'X',
with XZ_MAGIC1a = 0xFD377A58UL directly instead.

The little endian case is probably fine because 0xFD has bit7 on, 'X' off.

Looks like it.

I copied some hooks from another repository in the d-i area, and Otavio
helped me configure those hooks a few days ago here at debconf. But I
didn't see any documentation as to how this is supposed to work, and
it's perfectly possible that I missed the obvious somewhere.

Anyone else here who knows what should really be done? Also, it might be
nice if this was documented somewhere obvious.

(unless it is, in which case please slap me and tell me where to look)

Package: busybox-static
Severity: wishlist

Current busybox-static does not provide the "diff" command. Please
consider enabling it. Doing so would make busybox sufficiently capable
to run a configure script, which would help when bootstrapping a minimal
environment.

Thanks,
Josh Triplett

First of all, I'm running reportbug on a different box, but this bug is
related to the latest squeeze packages.

The busybox-static package has a telnetd, but cannot work standalone.
This isn't a problem normally, since you can just use inetd for that.
Unfortunately, it doesn't come with inetd.

Please enable the standalone telnetd by default.

It would be nice if busybox-udeb provided seq for use in d-i scripts.
See bug #618920 for one particular case where I would like to use it.

That code of course could be rewritten to avoid the use of seq, but its
so much cleaner with it.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi,

please add the switch_root command to Debians busybox that the linux
Documentation/filesystems/ramfs-rootfs-initramfs.txt describes.

Since it is impossible to get rid of libc6 in the initramfs I looked
into getting rid of klibc instead. But that also is practically
impossible.

The rootfs used by initramfs does not allow for mount --bind/--move and
therefore the old pivot_root way of switching from initrd to real root
does not work. pivot_root always returns an error. The new way involves
deleting all files in the rootfs and then mounting the real root to /
and exec-ing /sbin/init. Which is basically impossible to do with a
shell script.

The klibc provides a run_init binary to do this but eglibc has no
equivalent. Busybox is supposed to have a switch_root command but under
Debian it does not. So you are left with needing run_init + klibc or
leaving cruft being in the rootfs and wasting the memory it takes up.

MfG
Goswin

busybox's manual entry for "ps" says that it supports the "w" option for
wide mode, however, neither "busybox ps w" or "busybox ps ww" are giving me
more than my terminal widths' output.

It would be especially useful to be able to see this in the debian installer
terminal window when, say, a wget is taking forever :-)

  Thanks,
Tyler

Please enable CONFIG_GETOPT in config-udeb and config-udeb-linux. I need
this in order to merge Kickstart support; it's not feasible to do this
properly in shell without the help of getopt (I tried), and a C
implementation would be significantly bigger.

This adds 1176 bytes to the busybox binary on powerpc.

Package: busybox
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

it would be very useful if busybox sleep supported fractional time
periods (such as 0.5 seconds). The patch available at
http://err.no/patches/busybox_nanosleep.diff adds this support.

Bug#635053: Choose-mirror overrides mirror/suite and mirror/codename

2011-07-25 Thread Tokarski Boleslaw

Hello,

Please test it and if it works ping us to review and commit it;
I have tested the patch, found one bug, so I am attaching the updated
patch. It worked in my environment, though I might have not considered
all use cases.

regarding debootstrap you can preseed it using:

d-i base-installer/debootstrap_script string squeeze

This ought to work.
Great, thanks for the tip. I will give it a try, looks like it is going
to save me another hacked package.

Best regards,
Boleslaw Tokarski

Using all disks as one VG

2011-07-25 Thread Tim Stoop
Hi all,

I'm struggling with creating a recipe that creates a /boot partition
on the first disk and creates one large VG from all other disks (and
adds partitions to that VG, of course). There doesn't seem an option
to do this without knowing beforehand which disks are available in the
disk. I'm however trying to create a very generic recipe for use on
KVM guests that use multiple disks. Can anyone point me in the right
direction?

I've tried simply doing something like:
d-i partman-auto/disk /dev/vda /dev/vdb /dev/vdc /dev/vdd /dev/vde /dev/vdf

But that doesn't seem to help. Also, the following doesn't work either
(on Squeeze):
d-i partman-auto-lvm/new_vg_name vg

But I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct debconf name.

Lastly, I seem unable to find any guide that explains the available
options during preseeding for partman(-auto, etc.). Is there one
somewhere?

Thanks in advance for any reply!

Gegroet,
Tim

(forw) [SCM] UNNAMED PROJECT branch, master, updated. 34c9cfb5676eb4d97bc661139d6ff58acefb1e49

2011-07-25 Thread Christian PERRIER
Wouter, isn't there something missing in the way the partman-nbd
directory is setup in D-I's git? I suspect there is a need for
"naming" the project somewhere but can't figure out where.

Bug#635336: debian-installer: USB install: fails to "mount CD"

2011-07-25 Thread Adam Borowski
Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

(daily build from July 22)

First, the documentation for installing from USB is unclear whether you're
supposed to copy the contents of the CD to the FAT filesystem (ignoring
symlink problems), or just dump the .iso image to the root of the
filesystem. I did both just to be sure.

Boot and initial steps of d-i go just fine.

However, it later fails at the "Detect and mount CD-ROM" stage. The machine
happens to physically have one, it's just empty. Trying to skip the stage
doesn't work. Only manually doing: mount -tvfat /dev/sdb /cdrom will let
the installation to continue.

Pre-squeeze images in January did not have this problem. The machine I
installed then did not physically have a CD or DVD drive at all though, so
this might be a factor.

(Just got to the DebConf, so I can't try to start d-i on the old machine. I
do have the one that fails, so you can contact me in person.)

Please tell us about those regressions. Regarding the
USE_UDEBS_FROM=unstable I think it is due the KERNELVERSION value set to
2.6.32... more bellow.

I understand your frustation however we have the KERNELVERSION specified in
the architecture due technical reasons.

The installer itself, sometimes, need modifications or fixes to be able to
handle newer kernel versions so the version that is hard-coded on those is
the version that is supported by the installer. It is not only a matter of
recompile installer against the new kernel (sometimes this works by this is
not guaranteed). Another important point is that there are architectures
that use different kernels depending on the subarch (e.g armel uses iop32x,
kirkwood and others) and dynamically it is more difficult to handle this.

Specifically about the patch it is incomplete since it doesn't handle all
the architectures thus we can't take it.

Friendly,
