Bug#658681: "Select and install software" fails with debian-testing DVD text install

2012-02-04 Thread Joe Thompson
Package: installation-reports
Severity: critical
Tags: d-i
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-b...@orion-com.com

Using the testing DVD that I downloaded the evening of 3 Feb 2012,
installation fails near the end (95% or so of the way through "Select
and install software") using the text installer.

Steps followed: all choices were the defaults except as follows --

* use entire disk with LVM
* use guided partitioning, separate /home
* use kernel linux-image-3.1.0
* scan another CD: No
* use a network mirror: Yes
  * debian.lcs.mit.edu mirror
* install options: Debian desktop, SSH server

Install failed after "Configuring ntfsprogs". -- Joe

Btw, we are adding hardening here and there, but that consumes
noticeable room. We can perhaps make sure that the core set does not
enable hardening (except gpg maybe?).

I see

113K ./usr/share/misc/pci.ids.gz

Is that really needed at that stage?

Bug#658668: console-setup: Only include the debconf-selectable layouts in udeb

2012-02-04 Thread Samuel Thibault
Package: console-setup
Version: 1.75
Severity: normal

Hello,

To reduce the file & memory footprint of console-setup-udeb, it should
not include support for layouts other than what is selectable in
debian/console-setup-udeb.templates (keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap)

That means in the ekmap files, but also in the all_kbdnames() function
of keyboard-configuration.config, which should BTW not include the
layout name since that is not used.

disabling live-installer does indeed work, hence closing.

that debootstrap fails with 'cannot mount /proc' or something, is a
different bug in bootstrap-base (which i'm going to open soon once i've
made sure it's not live-build specific).

Bug#658588: Wheezy install on Sun Netra T1 cannot detect disks

2012-02-04 Thread Ben Brown
I got the squeeze one from
ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/installer-sparc/current/images/netboot/boot.img

I did suspect the error I'd been getting with the later daily builds
was size related.

I have managed to get the daily build from 20120101 to boot, it seems
to be missing modules, It's on a 3.x kernel, and the sym53c8xx is
missing, as below:

For information, the lenny one works fine, however upgrading from

I noticed the same behavior in VirtualBox installations from quite a
while, but I'm not sure if it's a VirtualBox oddity or not.
With your report it's the 2nd real hardware installation report who
mentions the same issue with graphical installation.

More feedback from graphical installations would be great.
I experienced the same problem while installing Debian Testing on a
Lenovo Thinkpad T61 about a month ago. The ISO image was probably from
Dec 31 or Jan 1 but I'm not certain. I have a few different computers in
my possession. Would it be useful for you if I tested if the graphical
installation works on these?

In the tasksel menu, some hexadecimal numbers were shown instead of the
task names. Screenshot: http://imgur.com/nitCL

This was very recently fixed:

If you use a daily image will be bot affected by this.

Yes, I just noticed that tasksel is now fixed on my installed system.

retitle 652946 busybox tar fails to copy filesystem.squashfs
thanks

i cannot reproduce it with plain squeeze, and not with custom squeeze
images (that use the same live-installer/d-i as wheezy, mostly).

while the error clearly is in busybox, and using the tar from the target
system is not acceptable solution, i assume this was a temporary issue
with busybox in wheezy.

i'll try to reproduce it later with a wheezy and sid/daily based image.

Package: debian-installer-launcher
Version: 5
Severity: normal

I want to do a live install from the media without disrupting my
existing network connection in the live system, so I am using preseeding
from the boot prompt to attempt to accomplish this. When performed from
the launcher, it fails. When performed from one of the Install boot
options, it succeeds.

I pass "netcfg/enable=false" as a boot parameter via "Live" boot target
using the i386 iso-hybrid gnome flavour of Squeeze Debian Live rc1 at:

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/squeeze_live_rc1/i386/iso-hybrid/

Then, once I am booted to the live system, the parameter is visible in
/proc/cmdline. When I launch the installer, answer the initial dialog,
and then open a shell from the installer menu, I can see that
/proc/cmdline also contains the parameter here. However, the installer
does not skip network configuration.

When I compare this with passing "netcfg/enable=false" via the "GUI
Install" boot option, network configuration is skipped as desired. So it
would appear that the launcher is not passing boot parameters to d-i
somehow. When I discussed this with Otavio on irc, he was unable to
quickly determine the cause, and requested I file this bug.

Ben

Bug#658616: wget is unable to use IPv4 addresses for IPv6-capable servers

2012-02-04 Thread Robert Millan
Package: busybox
Version: 1:1.17.1-8
Severity: normal
Tags: d-i

I file this on Squeeze version as this bug has been present for a long time.

However, for some odd reason (maybe related to freebsd-utils update?) this
has begun breaking Debian GNU/kFreeBSD installs.

On a pure IPv4 network with no IPv6 routing, GNU wget obtains IPv6 address
from host, and since it's unusable it falls back to IPv4 one:

$ LANG=C wget http://ftp.nl.debian.org/ -O /dev/null
--2012-02-04 15:21:01--  http://ftp.nl.debian.org/

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: unspecified [text/html]
Saving to: `/dev/null'

 0K .
49.1K=0.1s

2012-02-04 15:21:02 (49.1 KB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [5929]

Buxybox wget, however, stops here and fails:

$ busybox wget http://ftp.nl.debian.org/ -O /dev/null
Connecting to ftp.nl.debian.org ([2001:610:1908:a000::149:21]:80)
wget: can't connect to remote host: No route to host

I'm unsure why this didn't break D-I before.

There hasn't been an installer rebuild since ages. Please try a daily from
http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/ or use the squeeze installer.

The installer does not detect any drives. There's nothing in /proc/partitions. I
have tried selecting the sym53c8xx driver and rescanning but that hasn't worked.
When trying to add the driver using modprobe I get the following error:

The graphical installation program caused the computer to hang at the
language selection menu. The normal "bluescreen" installation program
worked just fine.

I noticed the same behavior in VirtualBox installations from quite a
while, but I'm not sure if it's a VirtualBox oddity or not.
With your report it's the 2nd real hardware installation report who
mentions the same issue with graphical installation.

More feedback from graphical installations would be great.

If you use a daily image will be bot affected by this.

Hello,

I've noticed that, yet again, sparc daily netboot image is too large
to boot. Last time we mitigated the problem by removing the support
for wireless networking. I'm going to poke around again to see what
else can be get rid of, please let me know if you have any ideas.
