Bug#689975: debian-installer: creates partition tables which are unreadable by cfdisk

2012-10-08 Thread Toni Mueller
Package: debian-installer
Version: 20110106+squeeze4
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I recently installed an amdt64 machine with the 6.0.6 CD. The
resulting disk layout was such that cfdisk refused to run on
that disk thereafter, giving this error message:

FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 2: Partition ends in the final partial
cylinder
Press any key to exit cfdisk

sfdisk and fdisk had similar complaints, but did not refuse to run.

Methinks the installer should create partition tables that are not
considered to be broken by the other partitioning programs.

Kind regards,
--Toni++

Re: boot parameter libata.force=1.5Gbps not recognized

2012-10-08 Thread Selim T. Erdogan
Selim T. Erdogan, 3.10.2012:

Adding libata.force=1.5Gbps to the boot parameters for the installer
doesn't work. It leads to a message saying unknown parameter 5Gbps.
(Trying 3.0Gbps leads to unknown parameter 0Gbps so it looks like it
 could be a parsing issue.)

 Details:
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NS140E laptop that was working fine with sid
until its hard drive died recently, so I got an SSD and prepared a usb
stick with the wheezy beta2 installer. The install was okay generally,
though there were many serious errors when accessing the drive, making
the system unusable. Searching online, I found out that some computers,
even ones whose SATA controllers are supposedly capable of 3Gbps, can
only manage 1.5Gbps and have problems with the auto-negotiation to drop
from 3Gbps to 1.5Gbps. The old hard drive that came out of the laptop
had a jumper on it, limiting its speed to 1.5Gbps, but this new SSD
doesn't have such a jumper setting, as far as I could find out.

To test that dropping to 1.5Gbps would solve the problems, I tried
installing Linux Mint. It recognized the boot parameter correctly,
leading to no drive errors at all and good performance (within the
bounds of 1.5Gbps, or course --- still much faster than my old hard
drive). The kernel for Mint was 3.2.0-23 and the one in the Debian
installer was 3.2.0-3, I think. (By the way, without that parameter,
Mint also had massive problems with the new drive.)

It turns out this wasn't limited to just the installer. It's a problem
with the libkmod2 package. Module parameters given in the kernel
command line are parsed incorrectly if the parameter value has a '.' in
it, like 1.5Gbps. I filed a bug report with a fix:

Hi,

This is actually not fixed in the stable version of the
installation-guide.

The squeeze documentation and the example preseed file should also be
updated.

 updated.

It is indeed fixed in the development version of the installation-guide
(this is the usual workflow).
You can find the last recent build of the guide under
http://d-i.debian.org/manual/

Since an update of the installation-guide for Squeeze is not very
likely to happen, this bug should be closed.

The manual does not explain how to burn the iso image as a bootable
cd-rom. I'm not one to burn cd-roms regularly (in fact I just
installed cdrecord to burn one) and it was not at all obvious at first
how to do burn at all (though that's Not Your Problem) let alone a
bootable one. It would have helped me, and I think other people a lot
if you just said something like:

To burn, type the following:
  cdrecord -eject -v dev=X,Y,Z -data -pad sarge-i386-netinst.iso

Package: installer
Version: Sarge rc3

After I'd prepared the CD-1 boot disk, installation as double-boot
option on my WinTel machine went unbelievably smoothly. Congratulations!

But as a newby I thought I should report a couple things that were
pretty opaque:

1) Nowhere was it made clear what the businesscard version was. This
term didn't seem to be used anywhere but on the Sarge download page,
with no explanation of whether I wanted the netinst or businesscard
version. I eventually made some guesses only by downloading both and
looking at their sizes.

2) Ultimately I used CD-1 rather than netinst or businesscard. I naively
wrote the .iso file to a CD. Eventually I accidentally discovered that
if I double-clicked the .iso file on my Windows XP system my CD writer
would unpack the files onto a CD, and I was then able to do the
installation. The documentation should say something about how to move
the image to the CD properly.

Bruce Sherwood

P.S. As a thank-you note, I'll mention vpython.org: VPython lets you
write Python programs that generate 3D animations as a side-effect of
computations!

Hi,

I couldn't find a way to preseed keyboard configuration to use layout=de
and variant=nodeadkeys.
I tried a wide variation of settings, tried to understand
keyboard-configuration.config ... to no success. As I couldn't find a
current manual for the installer online I had a look at the SVN version,
but the B.4.1. Localization appendix (English ,i386) does not seem the
be updated, yet.

These are the results of several preseed tests:
(preseeding keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap is needed to get rid of
the question as it seems)
Variables as found in /etc/default/keymap in the installer, but I
haven't seen this differ from the values in the installed system.

d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select foo
XKBLAYOUT=us
XKBVARIANT=

d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select de
XKBLAYOUT=us
XKBVARIANT=

d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select de
d-i keyboard-configuration/layoutcode string de
XKBLAYOUT=de
XKBVARIANT=

d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select de
d-i keyboard-configuration/layoutcode string de
d-i keyboard-configuration/variantcode string nodeadkeys
XKBLAYOUT=us
XKBVARIANT=

d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select de
d-i keyboard-configuration/variantcode string nodeadkeys
XKBLAYOUT=
XKBVARIANT=nodeadkeys

These settings were always active:
d-i debian-installer/language string en
d-i debian-installer/country string DE
d-i debian-installer/locale string en_US.UTF-8

In case there is something to try, I can quickly to a test in
virtualbox.

Hello,

in #592550, we have added a new preseed option to network-console,
which provides support for SSH key authentification. The following
patch adds an example value to the installation guide. I did not
add explanations, so that translations will not be needed, but I can
do if you prefer.

Have a nice Sunday,

I tried Wheezy beta2 installer netboot image on a Sparc T1000 server
(there is no other way to boot installer on this machine) using
console on the ethernet management port. Installation went ok apart
from two minor issues:

1. During the initial boot the following messages appear on the
screen:

udevd[51]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/vio_type' 'vio_type --export
/devices/channel-devices': No such file or directory
udevd[54]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/vio_type' 'vio_type --export

udevd[55]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/vio_type' 'vio_type --export

udevd[53]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/vio_type' 'vio_type --export
/devices/channel-devices/ds-0': No such file or directory
udevd[56]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/vio_type' 'vio_type --export
/devices/channel-devices/vldc-port-0-1': No such file or directory
udevd[57]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/vio_type' 'vio_type --export
/devices/channel-devices/vldc-port-0-2': No such file or directory
udevd[61]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/vio_type' 'vio_type --export
/devices/channel-devices/vldc-port-1-0': No such file or directory
udevd[62]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/vio_type' 'vio_type --export
/devices/channel-devices/vldc-port-3-8': No such file or directory
udevd[63]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/vio_type' 'vio_type --export
/devices/channel-devices/vldc-port-3-0': No such file or directory

This problem appears to be specific to installer's initrd, because I
don't see these messages on post-installation reboots.

2. Before the network configuration step the installer prompts to load
tg3 firmware from removable medium. It would be a problem, because
machine does not have any USB ports, but it turned out that the
ethernet cards are functional even without the firmware. Thus, all you
need to do is decline the firmware loading step and the installation
proceeds normally. According to dmesg, the cards are identified as
Tigon3 [partno(BCM95714) rev 9001] (PCIX:133MHz:64-bit) (machine has
4 of them installed).

It might be worth mentioning in the installation manual that even
though some cards may indicate that they require firmware, it may be
optional for their operation.

Package: debian-installer
Version: 20121003
Severity: normal

hi,

i've set up a wheezy box for running virtual machines using libvirt,
QEMU/KVM, virt-install, etc.

i don't really like installing VMs using VGA-over-VNC, so i tried a
serial console installation, like this:

virt-install \
--name=mytestvm \
--ram=1024 \
--vcpus=1 \
--cpu host \
--disk pool=guest_images_lvm,size=32 \
--network bridge=br0 \
--graphics none \
--location
http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/dists/wheezy/main/installer-amd64/ \
--extra-args=priority=low -- console=ttyS0,115200

i ran this over ssh, running in an 80x25 xfce4-terminal, value of TERM
was xterm, if that matters. some things i noticed:

* pressing end on my keyboard didn't go to the end of a list of
menu items, but instead acted as if i had selected go back (that
is, as soon as i pressed end, the previous menu screen was
  displayed).

* normally on a long menu screen you can scroll down by pressing the
down arrow key. this doesn't seem to work, and i couldn't manage
to reach the (hidden) options on the configure the package
manager screen where you can toggle sources.list entries for the
security and volatile repositories. i've attached a screen shot
of my terminal to show what this looks like.

To me it is still a bug, although others mentioned it is documented

It is. However that patch would need to be redone against Matt's changes
to netcfg.

Attached a new one, so that excuse can no longer be used.

Bug#690017: task-gnome-desktop: first login on minimal Graphical Desktop Environment system yields Oh no! Something has gone wrong.

2012-10-08 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor
Package: task-gnome-desktop
Version: 3.13
Severity: important

I just did an install from the nightly debian-installer, in text mode,
choosing default options all the way up to the tasksel screen.

In the tasksel screen, i chose Graphical Desktop Environment and
Standard System Utilities, and nothing else. The desktop
environment selection appears to have chosen task-gnome-desktop for
me.

After the reboot following the installation, i am greeted with gnome's
nearly-content-free error message screen, complete with frowny-face
computer:

Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occured and the system can't recover.
Please log out and try again.
  [Log Out]

weirdly, this screen seems to be a normal window thrown on top of a
functional destkop environment. If i press Alt+Spacebar, i can get
the window manager's menu, from which i can select close, revealing
the desktop.

Most users won't be able to figure out this workaround, and instead
will repeatedly click the log out button, only to log in again and
be stymied again.

I don't know where to find debugging information to sort this out.
there are many spurious-looking messages in ~/.xsession-errors. I'm
attaching one .xsession-errors from a failed session to this bug
report. maybe the ones about gnome-settings-daemon failing to
register are the relevant ones?

I find that if i add the Print Server task from tasksel, log out,
and then log back in again, i don't get this mysterious message.

Perhaps gnome needs to be more resilient on systems where normal
printer daemons aren't installed? or some extra dependency is
missing? or both?

I find that if i add the Print Server task from tasksel, log out,
and then log back in again, i don't get this mysterious message.

i've narrowed this down further. If the cups service isn't running when
the user logs in, they get this unhelpful error message and are
prevented from doing anything else in their login.

This seems like an dangerous bug in gnome -- if the CUPS service is
stopped (for whatever reason, including it not being installed, or
having crashed, or simply being), then no gnome login is possible.

 ... a bit more digging around ...

i find the same crash even if cups is running, as long as
/var/run/cups/cups.sock is not present or just isn't accessible to the user.

This is pretty clearly an unacceptable failure mode for a graphical
environment used by regular people. If CUPS crashes or refuses to
respond, the appropriate thing to do is to disable printing. It is not
appropriate to disable the rest of the entire desktop environment.
