Bug#542025: installation-reports: debian installer hangs at chooseing the langauges

2013-07-15 Thread D J Guan
Package: installation-reports
Followup-For: Bug #542025

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
When I try to install debian/testing on IBM X3100 M4 entry level server

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?
Try to install Debian GNU/Linux testing.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
The installer can only be booted using Legency mode, not UEFI Mode.
However, it stopped at the "Chosing Language" screen,
even when booting in Legency mode. No other actions were possible.
I need to turn off the power. In fact, I need to unplug the power line.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Install Debian GNU/Linux testing correctly.

di-sources.list needs to be updated:
* remove etch (and probably lenny too)
* add squeeze and wheezy
* not sure if jessie should be added yet, but probably soon
* drop some archs that aren't supported anymore

Also, once it's updated (and maybe if #505738 is fixed too) it would
be nice to have backports to squeeze and wheezy, I can do those if you
like just let me know.

Thanks,

Dear Maintainer,

If a per-user configuration is being used, which redefines STATUS_LIB, then
issuing the command 'di_netboot_assistant uninstall' does not list the
installed netboot images.

The hardcoded path /var/lib/di-netboot-assistant/ should probably be replaced
as follows:

< installed_repos="$( cd /var/lib/di-netboot-assistant/ ; ls |

Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
Installer still fails to detect the cd-rom. However, after booting
from the cd-rom the installation can continue from a usb stick.

After installation it was necessary to blacklist radeon, start in
single-user mode, enable networking and install firmware-linux-nonfree,
in order for the video driver to work (otherwise the display is
scrambled).

tl;dr: Success.

The only problem during installation was that it said
"ftp.se.debian.org" didn't have the requested distribution, so I
selected "cdn.debian.net" instead and that worked. Presumably, this
problem is because wheezy isn't released yet.

Dear Maintainer,

The install process went very smoothly. I have just a couple of minor
suggestions.
I used the graphical installer. When detecting network h/w, it stopped at the
"missing non-free firmware" screen. The files I needed were listed - I googled
them, downloaded the deb package, extracted the files, put them on a usb key,
and continued merrily along. Perhaps, helpful for a less experienced user, a
clue
could be offered where to find the files? Better yet, provide a link to them?

Also, when choosing the ESSID and entering the passphrase, it appeared in plain
text.
This would be better masked with *** by default, and an option given to display
it
openly.

Minor points. Overall, an excellent installation experience. Thanks for your
hard work!

Peace,
Tim

Comments/Problems:

Apart from the fact that it was not clear to me how to get the firmware for my
wireless card loaded during the installation (I finally had it manually copied
with a second usb to the /lib/firmware during the installion), I could not get
the wireless network to start during the installation. The error was
ieee80211 phy0: changing basic rates failed: -22
which happend all the time. Unfortunately I don't have the logs anymore as I
finally installed without this firmware. After the installation, I could
just install firmware-brcm80211, reboot, and everything was fine. As the most
obvious problem was a wrongly typed wpa2 key, I check it twice, but it must
have been right.

Comments/Problems:

Installed a minimal system + print server + ssh server + notebook task,
no graphical desktop.

Grapical installation from USB stick with non-free firmware on separate
USB stick and network via WLAN (WPA2) went flawlessly - even grub was
correctly installed, as the hard disk was recognized as /dev/sda.

Thank you so much!

Hi,

many thanks for submitting an installation report! Even though I'm now mass-
closing them as successful, rest assured that they were and are useful: during
development they have been read to confirm things are actually working and now
people find them when searching for whether a particular hardware is
supported.

If you have reported minor glitches have made sure that these are
known+reported issues (probably by not closing that particular successful
report with glitch where I'm not sure its reported.)

cheers,
Holger

Comments/Problems:

Needs firmware-linux-nonfree for Radeon, Broadcom brcm80211 for Wifi.

Nomodeset needed on reboot to prevent console corruption on first boot.

Text mode rescue used to allow install of nonfree firmware.

This x121e has SSD replacing original notebook drive.

Very successful UEFI install

Could do with expert install option / advanced options on initial boot up.

Comments/Problems:

The installer detected my ethernet adapter correctly
(Realtek RTL8111/8168) and claimed it needed a firmware:
rtl8168d-1.fw.

I was not able to find the file anywhere on the web,
but I was able to carry on the install using the
integrated wireless adapter (an Atheros AR9285).

After completing the install and rebooting, the
ethernet adapter works fine without any special firmware file
(although I keep getting a line "r8169 :01:00.0: eth0:
unable to load firmware patch rtl_nic/rtl8168d-1.fw (-2)" in dmesg).

To have KERN-C or ROOT-C at all you have to repartition. Now that you bring
this up, It would be nicer to select the partition by the label KERN-C--->
/dev/disk/by-partlabel/KERN-C

Bug#716977: Installer does not fill /etc/crypttab

2013-07-15 Thread Guillaume BROGI
Package: debian-installer
Version: testing

When partitioning with a RAID0 and a lvm volume on top, the initramfs
does not include the LVM module and, so, cannot mount /.

Fix: include the LVM module inside the initramfs

Additional info: This was done on a laptop with 4 ssd.
Each ssd had a 300MB partition, with the one on sda used for /boot.
The rest of the space on each disk is used for the raid array.
The encrypted device is created inside /dev/md0.
A LVM volume is created inside /dev/md0.
There are 2 partitions inside the volume, one for /, one for the swap.

The laptop is a work laptop, so I cannot try another install. I will
however try to reproduce the issue in a virtual machine using qemu.
If there is anything else I can do, please tell me.
If this is the wrong mailing list, I am sorry, and could you please
tell me which one is the right one.

Bug#716979: Installer cannot go past the "partitioning disk" stage

2013-07-15 Thread Guillaume BROGI
Package: debian-installer
Version: testing

When partitioning with a RAID0, a dm-crypt device on top and a lvm
volume inside the encrypted device, the installer does not validate the
"paritioning disks" stage. When dropping to the console, I can see that
all the paritions have been created and formatted. The system is even
using the swap.

Additional info: This was done on a laptop with 4 ssd.

Bug#716978: Installer does not fill /etc/crypttab

2013-07-15 Thread Guillaume BROGI
Package: debian-installer
Version: stable

When partitioning with a RAID0, dm-crypt device on top and a lvm volume
inside the encrypted device, the generated initramfs cannot boot
completely because it does not try to decrypt the encrypted device.

Fix: add the dm-crypt device to /etc/crypttab and regenerate the
initramfs

Excellent!

I'm curious about:

+Part-Kernel: /dev/mmcblk0p6

On my Chromebook partition 6 is KERN-C, but it is only a single sector:

xfsprogrs should be installed if xfs partitions are created

2013-07-15 Thread Holger Levsen
control: reassign -1 installation-reports
control: retitle -1 xfsprogrs should be installed if xfs partitions are created

Hi,

a user chose to install on xfs filesystems and then the system hang upon boot
as fsck.xfs wasn't installed. IMO d-i should install xfsprogs in such a case.

Reassigning to d-i as I'm pretty sure partman* is not suitable for this report
but I dont know which package would be.

cheers,
Holger

Feature dnsmasq as TFTP server in the installation guide ?

2013-07-15 Thread Charles Plessy
Hello everybody,

today I installed debian via TFTP on a network where I was already running
dnsmasq, and it had never been so simple:

# cat <<__END__ > /etc/dnsmasq.d/tftp
enable-tftp
tftp-root=/var/tftp
__END__

# /etc/init.d/dnsmasq restart
# mkdir /var/tftp ; cd /var/tftp
# wget
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/wheezy/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/gtk/netboot.tar.gz
# tar xvfz netboot.tar.gz

According to the Debian wiki, only the following other items need to be
configured.

interface=eth1
domain=yourdomain.com
dhcp-range=192.168.0.3,192.168.0.253,255.255.255.0,1h
dhcp-boot=pxelinux.0,pxeserver,192.168.0.2
pxe-service=x86PC, "Install Linux", pxelinux

https://wiki.debian.org/PXEBootInstall#Another_Way_-_use_Dnsmasq

Nevertheless, it looks like pxe-service is not strictly necessary.

I wonder if it would be worth mentioning dnsmasq proeminently it in the
Installation Guide. It is a much easier setup than isc-dhcp-server or BOOTP
(is that still needed ?)

Have a nice day,

You'll want a Wheezy netinst ISO, then.

debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso daily build 2013-07-14: apt configurational problems

2013-07-15 Thread r ductor
Installing with debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso daily build 2013-07-14
from www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ after successfull network
configuration I get a red background and error message like "apt
configurational problems apt cannot configure packages from CD". It seems
that one can anyway continue the install by choosing the country of the
repository, but I stopped there.

I'm sorry of the shortness of this short report but I do not have time to
complete the install, I need a working debian quickly.

Cheers
