Bug#717534: partconf: Drop reiserfs support

2013-07-21 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Source: partconf
Version: 1.42
Severity: important

Hi,

since reiserfs got dropped, various d-i components need to drop support
for it. Most of the changes[1] should already be in the relevant git
repositories, but partconf still needs updating.

 1. Hopefully the documentation under doc/devel/internals in
src:debian-installer should cover most of them.

Mraw,
KiBi.

User did not let installer to create default partition layout but
manually created incorrect one, or installed on a previously created
partitions and used ext4 and ext3 file-systems.

 Hello!
I have just upgraded Linux installation on my Pegasos-II machine to
Debian 7.1.0 Wheezy. The installer worked flawlessly, but the newly
installed kernel refused to boot up. Attempt to boot up the kernel
ends up in a text-mode screen filled up with garbage (randon
characters and attributes).
What's up ? Did you drop Pegasos support ?

There is no need to close it. I'm reassigning to the relevant part of
the installer.

The particular partition/file-system layout reported in this bug report
cannot work.

This platform does not have a boot loader at all. Firmware knows how to
load kernel directly from affs1, ext2 or older implementations of ext3
file systems. It is possible to tweak options while creating ext3 with
current tools to make it work, but it is not worth the trouble.

In practice this means you have to have ext2 boot partition, to place
the kernel onto, for this machine to boot.

Installer correctly creates ext2 boot partition and ext4 root partition.
The identical mkinitramfs and mkvmlinuz commands are issued during
installation as those during kernel upgrades. The generated vmlinuz
loads and kernel works fine.

Closing this bug report. This is not a bug.

Bug#714710: dpkg: when installed from live usb/cd /sbin/start-stop-daemon is empty shell script

2013-07-21 Thread Edwin Fukunaga
It looks like the usb-hdd images also have this issue. If I boot with
the image from

http://live.debian.net/cdimage/release/6.0.7/amd64/usb-hdd/debian-live-6.0.7-amd64-gnome-desktop.img

then /sbin/start-stop-daemon is again empty:

 $ cat /sbin/start-stop-daemon
 #!/bin/sh

 exit 0
 $

@Emanoil: It looks like there is no .deb file for dpkg included in the
netboot or usb-hdd images. I get no output from find | grep dpkg ,
and the pool/main/d directory doesn't have a dpkg subdirectory.
Actually, maybe the /sbin/start-stop-daemon is being changed by
live-build, because it is the same in the image as it is after booting
(using unsquashfs -lls filesystem.squashfs /sbin/start-stop-daemon ).

By the way, the iso-hybrid image does not seem to have this issue, at
least the gnome-desktop one from

http://live.debian.net/cdimage/release/6.0.7/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-6.0.7-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso

Thanks,
Edwin

and using a mirror that doesn't support InRelease files (squeeze's version of
approx), during the "Installing the base system" step it prompts with a message
that the InRelease file cannot be downloaded.

Selecting continue seems to work fine, presumably falling back to debootstrap's
handling of old-style Release and Release.gpg files.

It seems like debian-installer shouldn't bother to warn the user at that point
if the fallback methods haven't yet been tried...

live well,

Hi,

thank you for submitting bug reports concering debian-installer, much
appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are very old and/or
- they are wishlist but rather special + exotic and not have been acted on for
years. (See http://blog.liw.fi/posts/wishlist-bugs/ why it's often useful to
close wishlist bugs.)

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - and that's often better, as the bug
log will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

Package: debian-installer

Hi,

I was trying to install Debian on a new Lenovo S30 system. I downloaded
the file

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso

(label: Debian GNU/Linux testing "Wheezy" - Official Snapshot amd64
NETINST Binary-1 20120704-09:15)

and started the installer from the CD. Unfortunately, it was unable to
detect any drives.

I did some searching, and found that it seems to not contain the right
drivers for the SAS controller of my system. lspci -v shows

05:00.0 Serial Attached SCSSI controller: Intel Corporation C602
chipset 4-Port SATA Storage Control Unit (rev 06).

When running from a Knoppix CD, I got some line saying 'Kernel driver
in use: isci'. I do not see that line when running the Debian installer.
For reference, lspci -n shows '05:00.0 0107: 8086:1d6b (rev 06)'.

It seems to me that the installer doesn't contain or is unable to load
the isci driver.

Best,
Koen

package: debian-installer

Less experienced users will likely be intimidated and won't look in the
Advanced

Options section of the installer disk.

The Automated Install option is easier on n00bs. It may make the
difference between
a successful installation or them running back to windows which of
course sucks

finally resulting in given n00b becoming yet another computerphobe.

No n00b in their right mind will go to Advanced Options. Therefore
Automated Install

should be visible in the main menu.

Justification: renders package unusable

When the user selects only Korean language from installer and install only
standard system
the console can't display Korean messages at all.

This is very serious problem for Korean users.

The installer must provide console environment that display Korean properly if
system
locale is Korean and it's the only language set by the user.

To fix the problem, user needs to add English locale as super user.

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
Add en_US.utf-8

Then change English as system locale or set export LANG=en_US.utf-8.

The window messages are unreadable - full of tiny retangles.
Without the knowlede or access to other system, users will unlikely give up or
reinstall
the system.

It makes Debian as useless system. When I used to use IBM XT years ago, MS-DOS
provides
console that handles Korean using bitmap fonts.

I wanted to install debian remotely on my (next door) server
by following these instructions:

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Remote

When I do "fakeroot make rebuild_netboot" it doesn't find a
bunch of packages - see the end of the shell log. Some
editing was done with the mc editor and so is invisible in

On IBM x3650 M3 debian installer language selection broken-Only english is
available. Same ISO (usb-stick or DVD-R) is OK on another hardware. I tried
with both Netinstall and DVD-1 ISO provided on debian.org. Netinstall ISO has
been written on 3 several USB sticks using Unetbootin running on windows 7, and
DVD burned from Windows 7 integrated tools. All the media have been tested and
confirmed OK on other computers. The bug seems to be linked to hardware. ISO
versions are 6.0.2.1.

Package: debian-installer
Version: 20101127 (6.0 squeeze)

Just trying out Debian for the first time, installing it over the top of a
Gentoo box. I configured all the partitions (mostly by accepting the existing
software-RAID configuration and leaving it unchanged except for reformatting
everything.)

After this the main menu came up with "Configure MD devices" which I selected,
and half an hour later it's still sitting at a blank (blue) screen.

This is a network install, booted over TFTP and running through SSH. Syslog

Package: debian-installer
Version: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-businesscard.iso

After regular installation of Debian Squeeze from businesscard
netinst.iso on IBM x3650 M3 with LSI MegaRAID system is not booting.
There are no errors reported during installation, all hardware is
properly recognized and GRUB installs without problem but after restart
GRUB is not loading, only cursor blinks at top left corner of screen.
I suspect, that the problem is related to the GRUB installation.
To fix the problem, I have started netinst/rescue and installed LILO on
target system. With LILO, system works flawlessly. What is more funny,
if I install GRUB after LILO, GRUB is working also.
It means that LILO must change something in boot sector making it
bootable.
Server has LSI MegaRAID SAS controller and two disks in RAID-1.
This problem has been confirmed on second IBM x3650 M3 servers.

Installing Squeeze 64-bit graphical netinst through eth0.

I changed my physical location just before the "Popularity contest" page
without turning off the computer.

I ran the "Network configuration" step again, and it said "Autoconfiguration is
successful", and in the log on console 4 I could see that DHCP went OK.

However, when installing packages APT said in console 4 "Temporary failure in
resolving ", even if I tried very different mirrors.

At the same time, "wget http://google.com && cat index.html" could pull down
the frontpage of that website without any problem, so I assume that the network
was indeed configured and working.

Impact: I had to restart the whole installation process.

Tried to autoinstall squeeze on dell poweredge hardware with drac5 or
idrac6 KVM. The installer always tried to use 40MB usb vflash (/dev/sda)
instead of the 1tb real harddrive (/dev/sdb).

I'd suggest to give real harddrive controllers (like cciss, mptfusion,
ahci, megaraid_sas) precedence over usb_storage.

Package: debian-installer
Version: 6.0.6

I'm trying to build a text-only (no graphical desktop) Debian system
with ext2 instead of the default ext3, but the resulting install is
unbootable due to a bad grub configuration. To reproduce:

  1) I used the 6.0.6 netboot installer (tried both 32-bit and 64-bit)

  2) Went with default responses, with two deviations:

2A) Instead of guided partitioning, manually set a / partition and a
swap partition, with / formatted as ext2

2B) When tasksel came up with the defaults of graphical desktop and
standard system utilities, I unchecked graphical desktop

  3) Upon reboot, the grub menu comes up, then grub loads the kernel
and initrd, then the usual "Loading, please wait...", but a little while
later we get "Gave up waiting for root device" and it drops into the
rescue shell.

The culprit is line 6 of the GRUB configuration:

1: insmod part_msdos
2: insmod ext2
3: set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
4: search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set
5: echo 'Loading Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 ...'
6: linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-amd64 root=/dev/sde1 ro
7: echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
8: initrd /boot/initrd.img-02.6.32-5-amd64

The target hard drive was indeed /dev/sde when the installer was running
(due to USB card reader devices taking up earlier slots), yet it seems
that at boot time the hard drive is now /dev/sda. If I use the built-in
GRUB editor to on-the-fly change that line to have "root=/dev/sda1",
then the system boots fine. Once booted, if I then run "update-grub",
the new GRUB configuration has "root=UUID=" instead of
"root=/dev/sde1", and everything works fine.

If I start over and reinstall with ext3 instead of ext2, then the GRUB
configuration already has "root=UUID=", whence everything works
fine. It also works fine with ext4. Thus there seems to be a bug in the
Debian Installer when it comes to writing the GRUB configuration,
specifically in the case of using ext2.

In fact, if I drop into a shell at the end of installation but before
the reboot, I observe that grub-probe returns the correct UUID of the
partition, but the /target/dev/disk/by-uuid/ directory contains a BOGUS
value! Hence the grub-mkconfig script doesn't trust the UUID and doesn't
write it into the GRUB config. However, after reboot (via on-the-fly
GRUB editing), the /dev/disk/by/uuid/ directory contains the correct
value, explaining why update-grub at this point does the right thing.

I also stumbled on a mysterious different way to avoid triggering the
bug: if I start over and reinstall, again with ext2, but this time
allowing the graphical desktop in tasksel, then the GRUB configuration
ends up with the desired "root=UUID="! I'm at a complete loss to
explain this. Can the installation of the graphical desktop task somehow
cause /target/dev/disk/by/uuid/ to get corrected? I'm guessing that task
subsequently invokes "update-grub" after installing the background
graphics for the GRUB menu, but how are the udev links getting corrected
by the graphical desktop task?

Bug#698727: marked as done (debian-installer: /dev/sdb1 (USB stick) added to /etc/fstab with default options (user), preventing future NTFS auto-mounts)

Package: debian-installer
Version: 20121114
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainers,

While installing Wheezy b4 from USB drive, debian-installer (I think)
adds a line to /etc/fstab:

/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

The existence of this line, specifically the 'user' option (I think),
prevents mounting of NTFS filesystems by ntfs-3g, which results
in a standard ntfs-3g error:
"""Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the
external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild
NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root.
Please see more information at
http://tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-faq/#unprivileged""";

Reported are other USB mounting issues as well:
https://www.google.com/search?q=(debian+OR+ubuntu)+mount+usb0+(ntfs+OR+"")+/etc/fstab

The fix is to comment-out or delete the fstab line and let the
automounting be done by udev, which is part of base install anyway.

Hi,

thank you for submitting bug reports concering debian-installer, much
appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are very old and/or
- they are wishlist but rather special + exotic and not have been acted on for
years. (See http://blog.liw.fi/posts/wishlist-bugs/ why it's often useful to
close wishlist bugs.)

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - and that's often better, as the bug
log will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

System becomes unstable. Have tried both 32 bit and 64 bit installs with all
standard kernels offered with both 6.0.5 and 6.0.6 net-inst CD images.

Stripped out all extraneous hardware but problem persists with just the
motherboard, APU and RAM.

Here is a log extract of one of the faults:

Dear Maintainer,

Trying to install Debian wheezy amd64 from a DVD downloaded with jigdo onto a

"No kernel modules were found.
This probably is due to a mismatch between the kernel used by this version of
the installer and the kernel version available in the archive.

Continue the install without loading kernel modules?"

Package: installation-reports
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I tried to install kfreebsd-i386, which was largely successful with
two glitches:

1) I selected german keyboard layout, which was completly ignored.
I see this has already been reported in other reports, so I'll focus
on the other issue.

2) Since mz internet connection is somewhat flaky I usuallz install
via a local approx mirror. This never caused anz problems so far
(on i386, powerpc) but as this is my first installation of wheeyz
I can't tell for sure if the following is related to kfreebsd or is
a new bug affecting all archs...

The installer correctlz downloaded it's additional components via
approx. Also installation of the base szstem was without problems,
but late in the installation procedure, when trying to install
more software (most notably grub without which the installation
won't complete) the installer failed to retrieve the package list
of the full kfreebsd-i386 archive.

As a workaround I chrooted into /target and installed grub-pc
via aptitude. As aptitude worked fine (using the same mirror) I'm
prettz confindent, that the mirror setup is ok, but the problem
is some incompatibilitz between approx and the wheezy installer.

Actuallz I didn't trz installing without approx so I can't know
for sure if the issue is reallz related to approx, but I can't
think of anzthing else special about mz setup. So unless the
installer is broken for everybody, it likely is approx.

Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Chapter 7.1 of the squeeze installation guide contains the sentence

"For direct on-line help you can try the IRC channels #debian
or #debian-boot on the OFTC network."

As the population of #debian-boot is obviously not prepared for
end-user question, #debian-boot should be clearly flagged as an
"experts only" channel, and end-users should be discouraged from
joining there.

Greetings
Marc

Hi,

thank you for submitting bug reports concering debian-installer, much
appreciated.

Version: 6.0.2

My screen goes blank and there is no responsee from the keyboard
immediately after GRUB boots into linux after running the installer.

I have attempted to install Debian 6.0.2 twice. The first time I used the
option to boot from windows (by clicking on the link from
goodbye-microsoft.com). The second time, I used the
debian-6.0.2.1-i386-netinst iso. In both cases, I was able to boot into
the installer, to go into the graphical installer, and to appear to
complete the boot process using more-or-less the default options,
including the installation of GRUB to the MBR. I have installed linux
many times in the last 15 years, including several versions of debian.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The system then rebooted,
and went to GRUB. GRUB showed two options, the standard boot and the fail
safe option. Selecting either of these leads to a long sequence of
standard boot messages to appear, before the screen goes blank. At this
point, there is no response to the keyboard; the caps and num lock lights
do not toggle, and ctrl-alt-del does not reboot the system.

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hi,

I tried to install lenny with the official net-install cd on i386 in a qemu
environment.

I did not partition /dev/hda, but choose to use the whole device for the root
filesystem.
This caused the "mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda" command to hang indefinitely.

The reason seems to be the confirmation prompt of mkfs when trying to format a
non-partition.

Sending "y" via echo to stdin of the mkfs.ext3 process fixed the problem and
allowed mkfs to progress as expected.

I guess, the installer should add the "-F" switch for mkfs.ext3 in case of a
non-partition target device.

Obviously it is not recommended to use a whole block device for a filesystem.
But since the installer seems to allow this, it should not hang later.

thanks for your time,
Lars

Hi,

thank you for submitting bug reports concering debian-installer, much
appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are very old and/or
- they are wishlist but rather special + exotic and not have been acted on for
years. (See http://blog.liw.fi/posts/wishlist-bugs/ why it's often useful to
close wishlist bugs.)

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - and that's often better, as the bug
log will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

Hello Maintainers,

I have 146 IBM eServer xSeries 335 and they are working fine with Lenny

1) D-I does not ask me for the firmware of the integrated Broadcom NICs

2) does not ask me for the firmware of the integrated SCSI-Controller
-> LSI 53c1020

2) If I mount the USB-Stick (cellphone or SD card) manualy, D-I detect
it as an install medium and does not bother installing Debian on it.
WTF?

3) D-I can not mount a fresh bought SD card, or USB Stick, because it
want to enforce a superdisk on /dev/sda instead of mounting the
parition /dev/sda1.

However, the previous owner of the server had FC 8 installed on it and
it worked, so why can D-I not load the modules and firmware?

Normaly this bug should be "grave" or even "critial"...

Note: Don't believe, I throw away 400 Servers of a value
of more the 5 mio Euro even if D-I is sick!

Realy, Debian becomes more and more worse!

It was the best server systems and now it degrade it self.

Thanks, Greetings and nice Day/Evening

Dear Debian Team!

A fresh burned DVD with debian squeeze 6.0.3 amd64 fails to boot at my
system.

It displays only the first line "ISOLinux something something .. at al"

Following boot scenarious fails:
- Debian Squeeze 6.0.3 amd64 - dvd 1 : Burned to a DVD
- Debian Squeeze 6.0.3 amd64 - dvd 1 : written to a USB stick
- Debian Squeeze 6.0.3 amd64 - netinstall : CD and USB stick
- Debian Live Squeeze 6.0.3 amd64 written to a DVD
- GRML64 2011.12
- Debian Wheezy Netinstaller (today downloaded)
Internal IDE DVD Writer was exchanged to a USB DVD Writer. Same results.

The disks and sticks were verified on my Laptop. They did boot there.

Following scenarios did boot:
- Debian Lenny 5.0.1 amd64 - ISO 1
- FreeBSD 8.2 amd64 DVD 1
- Knoppix 6.7

In my opinion it might be related to a change at syslinux bootcode
change at the time where lenny got developed to squeeze. Other
distributions like knoppix use ISOLinux which did boot on my system.
FreeBSD of course dont use syslinux too. I'm not sure if that error is
related to syslinux or the debian-installer, because grml which rely on
syslinux too, dont boot on that hardware.

Why did i not recognize that error before? My system was last installed
when Lenny was testing. After that, only dist-upgrades.

I know it might be hard to impossible for you to reproduce this error
because you dont have my hardware, but i'm reporting that bug knowing that.

My Hardwareconfiguration:
Asus M3A32 MVP Deluxe / BIOS 2202 (up to date)
AMD Phenom 1090T
BenQ IDE DVD writer

Best Regards
Georg Gast

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
During installation of netinstall CD for amd64 graphical installer dies
immediately on startup freezing the system
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
fell back to text install after reboot
   * What was the outcome of this action?
Installation later went fine
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Comments/Problems:

Sorry if I used the wrong message format, I don't get Debian installed and so I
do not get reportbug running.

Installation does not work on EeePC 701.

I used the netinstall image (debian-6.0.3-i386-netinst.iso), dd'ed it to a
SD-card and rebooted the EeePC.

It looks like the Ethernetadapter Atheros L2 100 Mbit (rev a0) and the WLAN
Adapter Atheros AR5007EG 802.11 b/g Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01) are
both not working.

I tried to modprobe the corresponding modules, but the modules are not in the
image.

Since Netzwork does not work the installer tries to find a CD-ROM drive which I
do not have.

The only option left is to stop the installation.

Is there a kernel and initrd files which I can copy into the SD-card to resolve
the problem?

Regards Richard

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they were caused by broken hardware and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

Comments/Problems:

I've tried d-i beta 2 on Dell XPS 630i. I first tried creating a USB
memory stick with the installer .iso on it (following a standard
procedure); the install USB stick works on my other computer (Lenovo
T410s). However, on 630i it always fails at the beginning of the
install process. The message, when kernel panics, typically goes like
this:

... (no apparent error messages thru this point) ...
[0.597991] List of all partitions:
[0.600310] No filesystem could mount root, tried:
[0.602749] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(8,3)
... (call trace output after this) ...

(This output is from an attempt to use CD install medium.)

I have tried adding rootdelay=10 option for the kernel, without any effect.

I have observed the same symptom with the netinst .iso burned on a
blank CD. In fact, I have never been able to use d-i successfully on
630i (I've tried the same thing several months ago). Last time I
installed Debian, I had to install off a Lenny install medium and then
do dist-upgrade.

Is there any way to get Squeeze d-i to work on this machine? Any help
is appreciated.

Comments/Problems:

Partitioning hard drives (DI uses title 'Partitioning disks'):
  - Creating raid 1
In the dialog it says:
+ "A minimum of 2 active devices is required."
The system will have 4 disks but 3 are full with data in the old system
and need to be transfered disk by disk. So I wanted to create a raid 1
with 1 active disk and grow it later to 4 disks.

+ "NOTE: this setting cannot be changed later."
mdadm --grow can change it so this is simply not true.

  - Creating filesystem
+ Selecting a predefined mount point should set a coresponding label if
none is set already. My root partition has label root, /usr has label
usr, /var has label var and /home has label home.

Install base system:
  + Check size of common mountpoints (/, /usr, /var)
At first I made / too small and it failed much later during the
installation of the kernel image. Debian kernels are HUGE compared to
my usual build-to-fit custom kernel.
It would be good if the installer would know the size requirement for
all the usual mountpoints people use and check if the defined partitions
have sufficient space. The numbers should be known for at least the
standard task, more would be better.

General:
+ Oerall a nice flow. Seems smoother than with lenny. During downloads the
remaining time was displayed in seconds. That was a nice touch.

+ Missing moonbuggy or tetris. One does get bored watching it work.

+ Missing a text editor on tty5 for making notes during install. It should
have a file (/tmp/notes.txt) open and copy it to /target/var/log/installer
at the end.

Post reboot: (Now we come to the real problems)

- Mounting local filesystems...failed.
WTF? Why? Why does it continue to boot? The new insserv just keeps on
booting even with critial scripts failing.

The problem seems to be that the /etc/fstab entry for /proc does not match
  the entry in /proc/mounts:
/etc/fstab:
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
/proc/mounts:
none on /proc type proc (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)

The mountall.sh script executes this command:
  # mount -v -a -t nonfs,nfs4,smbfs,cifs,ncp,ncpfs,coda,ocfs2,gfs,gfs2 -O
no_netdev; echo $?

proc/proc procdefaults0 0
mount: proc already mounted => exit(32);

  vs.

none/proc procdefaults0 0
mount: none already mounted on /proc => exit(0);

The odd thing is that in /etc/init.d/mountkern.fs there is:

domount proc "" /proc proc -onodev,noexec,nosuid

The 4th argument is the DEVNAME used in mount. So the /proc should be
mounted from 'proc' and not 'none'. Could it be /proc is kept from the
  initramfs?

Is this only showing if /etc/mtab is linkd to /proc/mounts? (see below)

- /etc/mtab is not a link to /proc/mounts

I configured my / and /usr to be read-only. That means the /etc/mtab must
be a link to /proc/mounts. I thought that was now standard for all new
installations. It should definetly be a link if / is read-only.

- /tmp not tmpfs

When selecting / read-only and not having a seperate /tmp partition the
installer could configure the system for tmpfs for /tmp. It could offer
that option in general (include /var/run and

Subject: debian-installer-launcher - cdebconf troubles / d-i installation fails
Package: debian-installer-launcher
Version: 2
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***
Hi,

I have got some errors when trying to install a live image using
debian-installer-launcher (s. below).

There are first few errors (missinf part of .so file names of cdebconf) however
it is possible to follow the installation to the virtual HDD (VirtualBox von
Oracle) only when chosing the english language (the live image has german as
defaults and comes up with german language settings). After installing all
files there is an error messages like "install failed" (s. below). I had the
same problems when booting on real hardware (without VirtualBox) and when
trying to install from the "install boot menu". I have repeated these tests few
times and will it execute some furthers tests with English as an default live
language.

regards,
Mark

PS. on the host I used live-build a23 to create live images

udebs worked, but all four blocking bugs of this one are still open, so am I
right to assume this bug is still present in both wheezy and sid images?

got on the mainline kernel on 2.6.38 I don't know if it's backported. In any
case I tested using kernel from backports and firmware from testing, got the
mainline module working but lost suspend and hibernation. Also tried testing,
got support correctly with wi-fi on install but also got problems with usb
controller (specially integrated camera), also lost dynamic control of cpu
freq. So stayed with stable and ended using the propietary driver from Realtek
website.

Package: debian-cd
Severity: normal

You can boot CDs on s390, which is why we generate ISOs. However, nobody
implemented to actually pull the debs from the disc. Instead booting CD1 is
basically equivalent to booting a netboot image. You can, of course, copy the
debs onto some FTP and then install from there.

Hence it would be useful to provide a real netboot image that only contains the
usual documentation, the d390.ins and the boot subdir of a normal CD images,
but no further debs.

Please note (for someone's reference) that copying the .ins and boot from the
CD to a FTP server does not seem to work when trying to boot in LPAR mode. CD
booting does work with current squeeze images, however.

Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

I had many problems with the install process but the above mentioned is the
most critical as it prevents me from doing anything else after install. I can't
add a single package, for instance, because the password doesn't work.
I don't know what else to say about the bug. The installer asks for a root
password, and I supply one. Next the installer asks for the name of the user,
which I type. Then the installer asks for a username, which I provide. Then the
installer asks for the password for that user, and I type one. That's it,
there's four steps to the whole "adding username" process. Nowhere does it ask
whether the user should be able to get root access (he/she should, being the
only user!). So, after completing the install and booting into the system, it
does not allow you to login as "root", but logging in as the primary user gives
you a system that is "semi-usable"; that is, I can use everything, but I can't
install, update, I can't even do a simple "sudo dpkg -i". Very frustrating.

Other problems I had with the install process are as follows:
1. Wireless network detection failed. I have a T60 and required the iwl3945
driver. I had this driver on a flashdrive and installed it in a live session
terminal with "dpkg -i". Only after doing so could my system access the
internet. Then I performed the install.
However, the installer would not detect a network no matter what. Even the
manual method would not work. Maybe this was because I was using the
aforementioned driver? I don't know.
Furthermore, if I tell it to connect to so-and-so network, it asks for a
password, but only a WEP-key is supported! What?! Really it's 2011 and the
installer doesn't even know that WPA exists? What about WEP password instead of
WEP hex key? At any rate, so I had much trouble getting the system to connect.
I finally just removed encryption from my wireless router, but still the
installer seemed to fail to connect, and on the first boot it didn't appear to
connect to DHCP.
2. Within the live terminal or within the system following install, doing a
"Restart" results in an endless loop. It does not shut down the system, it
simply logs out, then appears to restart the kernel, then presents the login
screen again. It does not really restart the computer. Only using "Shutdown"
will perform a hard reboot.

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

Comments/Problems:

When anna searches for the file /cdrom/dists/stable/Release it fails. The file
doesn't exist and in fact the stable directory doesn't exists and
only testing and wheezy exists.

My install setup is a usb key to install both i386 and amd64 debian.
I create the key with syslinux then copy the vmlinuz and initrd.gz and rename
them to take into
account the architecture (e.g. vmlinuz -> vmlinuz_amd64_wheezy and so on)
I create a syslinux file with the i386 and amd64 entry
and copy the netinstall iso image of the testing distribution found on
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
It works as the installation starts but fails when looking for the iso image.

Comments/Problems:

Hi,

On a new machine, I wanted to test the daily-build of Squeeze installer for
amd64.

I have three comments on the installation.

1) The machine has 2 SATA hard drives, are mounted in RAID1 soft by Linux.
I have a RAID1 partition "md0" to "/boot", the root is mounted on a logical
volume,
it uses the same partition RAID1 "md1".

The installation is successfully completed, except for installing the boot
loader
grub2 (version 1.98-1).

Through the console, I have this:

# grub-install --recheck --no-floppy --modules="mdraid raid" /dev/md0
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.

# grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sda
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.
Auto-detection of a filesystem module failed.
Please specify the module with the option `--modules' explicitly.

# grub-install --recheck --no-floppy --modules="mdraid raid" /dev/sda
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.
You attempted a cross-disk install, but the filesystem containing
/boot/grub does not support UUIDs.

# grub-install --recheck --no-floppy --modules="mdraid raid

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.

/boot/grub does not support UUIDs.

There is this in the file "/boot/grub/device.map":
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb

The matching of UUID and devices is good:

# blkid
/dev/sdb1: UUID="248d7222-1d79-dd61-2766-b0f63e142f70" LABEL="eole2:0"
TYPE="linux_raid_member"

/dev/mapper/VG0-root: UUID="6e5c349c-d880-4329-a15c-e192aee4954a"
TYPE="ext4"

The file "/etc/fstab" (created by installer) contains:
/dev/mapper/VG0-root/ext4errors=remount-ro01

UUID=157deef1-ea8f-4611-9021-5e2fabcd84cf/bootext302

The command "grub-probe" is no more reassuring:
# grub-probe -d /dev/md0 -tabstraction
grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.

I read the bug report #554790 on Grub2 and UUID, but it is February.

Does Grub2 (version 1.98-1) manages UUIDs?

I was not able to set Grub2 with the "/dev/disk/by-id".

Comments/Problems:

Hi,

I test the installer on this machine that is not yet in production.

In September and yesterday I tried the daily Netinst CD.

I think I have problems with this machine because it uses an PATA CDROM
(VIA VT6415 PATA Controller) and SATA disk (Intel P55 SATA chipset AHCI
mode).

In September, the Netinst CD (build 20100211) does not work because the pata_via
module was not provided. I replaced the PATA CDROM with a SATA and I could
do the installation from which I make this bug report.

Yesterday I wanted to test the version of the day (build 20101025)
with the PATA CDROM. It boot, and the kernel gets stuck in the SATA.

I tried to capture the logs with netconsole with no success.

Regards.

I tried many times to make it work but it always fails. So I installed
Lenny and it was successfull. So after that I tried to make a dist-upgrade
and it seems to do it well but when I rebooted the system it didn't boot.
The system fails looking for the root device. So rather than the
installation issue is the dist-upgrade issue.

Can someone help me?.

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I wasn't able to select 'Melbourne' or 'Victoria' as a timezone. Other correct
Australian timezones were displayed, even some that I'd consider much less
popular than Melbourne, a captial city,

I was prompted with an error about Dictionaries-common. I was told to 'Please
insert the disc labelled: 'Debian GNU/Linux testing _Wheezy_ - Official
Snapshot amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20110608-21:45'. The CD was still in the drive.
On console 4 I had the message:
Jun 15 05:38:13 load-install-cd: E: Failed to mount the cdrom.

Hitting 'Continue' repeatedly bought up the error. Hitting 'Go Back' seemed to
continue.

Then there was an error about Configuring grub-pc. The message said:
There was a problem reading data from the CD-ROM. Please make sure it is in
the drive. If retrying does not work, you should check the integriy of your
CD-ROM.
Failed to copy file from CD-ROM. Retry?

Retrying doesn't succeed. I've (previously) ran a 'md5sum -c' on the md5sum
file on the CD image, and not found any problems. I've also done a similar
thing on the Mac itself (by booting to the Mac OSX partition, and writing a
short python script that uses hashlib, as md5sum isnt' natively available on
Mac)

On console 4 at this point I'm seeing some errors about configuring grub-pc,
lines like:
Jun 15 05:58:42 in-target: Use of uninitialized value $item in exists at
/usr/share/perl5/Debconf/DbDriver/Cache.pm line 39, line 76.
There were similar lines about value $template in
/usr/sahre/perl5/Debconf/Template.pm line 81, line 85.

There were also error messages saying
Jun 15 05:58:42 anna[20604]: DEBUG: resolver (kernel-image-2.6.38-2-amd64-di):
package doesn't exist (ignored)
Jun 15 05:58:42 anna[20604]: DEBUG: retrieving
reiserfs-modules-2.6.38-2-amd64-di 1.80
Jun 15 05:58:42 cdrom-retriever: error: Unable to find
'pool/main/l/linux-kernel-di-amd64-2.6/resierfs-modules-2.6.38-2-amd64-di_1.80_amd64.udeb
Jun 15 05:58:42 anna[20604]: WARNING **: package retrieval failed

Those last two lines were repeated every time I hit '' on the configuring
grub-pc prompt. Hitting no on the prompt bought up the same message, but on the
4th console it was reporting that ntf-modules-2.6.38-2-amd64-di_1.80_amd64.udeb
was unable to be retrieved, and then something else, possibly called qnx
something.

I installed grub to the MBR, but upon rebooting the MAC failed to boot into it,
and instead did an EFI boot into the installed MAC partition. I'm going to try
getting booting working with rEFit, but thought I'd send in this installation
report first.

Cheers,
Geoff Crompton

Justification: breaks the whole system

First : installation locks on first screen just after "install" choice. It
begins if you choose "help" and enter only "install", there is an error
"undefined video number 314", but it continue.
Second : Installer does not find CDROM,image, mounting it by "mount -t 9660
/dev/sdb /cdrom" from another console is needed to load base system.
Third : apt-config does not finish, then sources.list must be done manually to
allow packages download.
Fourth : /proc isn't mounted in /target "mount -t proc -o bind /proc
/target/proc" solve this problem and allow to configure some packages and
finish installation.
