I'm setting up a new install, using guided partitioning with LUKS
encryption.

I have a 750GB hard disk (a somewhat old machine!) and I've twice
restarted it thinking that it had hung on the screen which says
"Erasing data on SCSI1 ...".

I then realised that it's just exceptionally slow.

I suggest that the dialog window should say something along the lines
of "This can take a VERY long time (possibly hours), please be
patient."

Alternatively, if there's a way of saying not to bother wiping the
partition, that could be good for someone who's not overly concerned
that the partition is covered with random bits before they begin.

Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

Using Squeeze installer RC2 (text mode via "Install" option from boot menu),
after selecting "Guided, entire disk, encrypted LVM" as a partitioning mode and
confirming it, there is a long process of erasing data from partition #5.

As I am installing Debian on a new system with a blank disk it will be prefered
to omit "Erasing data" step by telling installer not to do it, because it is
time-consuming and obviously not needed on a new disk.

Hello,

I'm currently in the process of installing wheezy and after 15 hours of
blockdev-wipe, the progress indicator is at 11%. This means that the expected
time for the wipe to complete would be 5.5 days when extrapolating linearly
(which is optimistic due to decreasing disk performance towards higher block
numbers). The device that is being wiped is a md raid 1 of two 3TB disks.
This means that I'm averaging 6 MB/s on two brand new disks and an Athlon II
X4 640 processor. This is at least a factor 10 too slow.

As far as I can see, several things conspire to achieve this extraordinary
slowdown:
* blockdev-wipe is writing with a block size of 64k
* blockdev-wipe opens the device with O_SYNC (cf. bug #381135)
* md is running a resync in the background

Changing the block size to 4M increases throughput to 48 MB/s and disabling md
resync brings throughput up to 60 MB/s.

I still have to benchmark different block sizes, but before I get to that, I
suggest to disable md resync. More specifically, I suggest to set to zero
/proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min, which controls the minimum resync rate.
That way, resync will yield unconditionally to any other I/O.

I'm attaching a patch (untested!) to set speed_limit_min to zero only for the
duration of wiping, however I wonder whether it might be more desireable to do
this in a different place and to keep speed_limit_min at zero during all of
the installation. That would certainly speed up package installation on md
raid installs.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Thiemo

Comments/Problems:

Lately I have been doing LVM over full-hard-drive encryption, which the
installer supports
nicely in automatic mode. However, I find the 10G root partition a little small
for a
desktop machine, and ideally I would like to dip into manual mode and tweak
that a bit
bigger. However, I find manual mode extremely obtuse, and just didn't bother
this last
time.

I also did this install on a 500G drive. It took more then 24 hours for the
encryption
process to go through and wipe the drive. (At least that is what I think it was
doing.)
Minimum there should be a warning about this, and ideally it would be nice to
skip it
with the option of doing it manually (for non-root partitions) later. This is a
personal
laptop, and I am not guarding military secrets. ;-) 24 hours seems to be a bit
much.

I've recently tried the weekly built netinst image of Debian Installer to
install Wheezy on
a computer with a hard disk of 640 GB.
I wanted to experiment with encripted volumes, so to get an idea of what could
be a sensible
setup, I tried the guided partitioning option for encripted LVM. I just wanted
to see what
was Debian's recipe for that setup before coming up with my own.

Unfortunately, the installer decided to erase (very thoroughly I learned too
late) all data on
the newly created 632 GB volume it, which took roughly 26 hours.

Had I been asked, I would have chosen no to wipe out the volume, because no
sensitive
information was previously there, just the proprietary pre-installed operating
system that
I never intended to use, but came with the computer anyway.
Besides, even for sensitive information, a 26 hour-long erasing on an average
hardware, with
no prior notice or confirmation is IMHO not what the installer should do.

Please consider:
a) changing the erase algorithm for someting more expeditive, even at the
expense of some
   effectiveness;
b) asking the user if she actually wants to erase the contents of the newly
created volume;
c) warning the user that the erasing could take more than 1 day.

Thank you.

Comments/Problems: I encountered several problems that I managed to
overcome, and I'm writting just one ticket. Firstly, during the expert
install I selected Serbia and opted for Serbian mirrors. Trying to
install Jessie resulted in an error message to the effect that the
package signatures are not in order. Switching to Wheezy reported an
error saying that it was unable to install the kernel, but that I can
choose to proceed without one if I know what I'm doing. I have
abandoned the expert install at this point. After that I went with the
quick and dirty route, which resulted in the Grub bootloader being
installed onto the USB stick (mounted as sda) instead of the hdd
(sdb). Having booted from the usb I manged to install Grub onto the
hdd (which was now mounted as sda for some reason). I marked down the
partitioning scheme because the automated paritioning of a 320GiB HDD
(with the /usr, /home, /tmp and /var dirs having their own sepperate
partitions) resulted in a 300MB temp and 300MB rootfs paritition which
proved inadequate the 1st or 2nd time I tried to install a custom
package using dpkg -i (since skype and the like prefer /opt for some
reason).

Like I said - I managed to overcome all of this and get a working OS,
but not without a lot of needless hassle. I have a little earlier
linux experience which helped me figure out just what exactly went
wrong. I can't imagine someone new to Linux as an OS or to the Debian
distro would put up with all this. Seriously, at the very least the
installer should be able to figure out where to install the bootloader
and be able to come up with a practical partitioning scheme.

Re: Build debian-installer on Debian Wheezy 64.

2013-10-30 Thread Thiemo Nagel
Dear Thomas,

a blind guess: gold is known to have some issues. Maybe it helps to
use ld from binutils?

Cheers,
Thiemo

Build debian-installer on Debian Wheezy 64.

2013-10-30 Thread Thomas Martin
Hi everyone.

I'm trying to build debian-installer on Debian Wheezy 64 but I'm
getting this error (full log at the bottom):
/usr/bin/ld.gold.real: error: hidden symbol '__nss_aliases_database'
is not defined locally
/usr/bin/ld.gold.real: error: hidden symbol '__nss_ethers_database' is
not defined locally
/usr/bin/ld.gold.real: error: hidden symbol '__nss_netgroup_database'
is not defined locally
/usr/bin/ld.gold.real: error: hidden symbol '__nss_rpc_database' is
not defined locally
/usr/bin/ld.gold.real: error: hidden symbol '__nss_shadow_database' is
not defined locally
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

Here is the steps I did to build debian-installer:
# apt-get build-dep debian-installer
$ apt-get source debian-installer
$ cd debian-installer-20130613+deb7u1/build
$ cat sources.list.udeb.local
deb http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian wheezy main/debian-installer
deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main/debian-installer
$ fakeroot make build_netboot

If I follow the exact same steps on i386 the build works just fine.

Did I missed something?
FYI my final goal is to build debian-installer Wheezy with a backported kernel.

Thanks.

Maxime
