Bug#766570: USB keyboard unresponsive after kernel load, but mouse works (Jessie Beta 2 amd64)

2014-10-24 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi Daniel,

 Comments/Problems:

Grub worked fine in both flavors (UEFI Generic).

I suspect you mean syslinux/isolinux prompts, rather than grub?

After booting the kernel, the USB keyboard does not work: becomes
unresponsive. Numlock light stays on, but cannot be changed.
Changing USB port does not fix. Plugging in keyboard after kernel
 boot does not work.

On the specs page I see:
  2 x USB 3.0
  4 x USB 2.0

Did you try both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports?

What keyboard is that? I guess we might be missing some driver in the kernel
udebs.

KiBi.

Bug#656710: partman-crypto: Preseeding the passphrase

Christian PERRIER bubu...@debian.org (2014-10-20):
 Quoting Cyril Brulebois (k...@debian.org):

Christian: Can you please check that this modification isn't going to
generate either noise or work for translators? And suggest another
approach if I failed to do that properly.

Should be fine from what I see, no problem.

Thanks.

Since I received no objections I went ahead and just uploaded partman-crypto/77.

Subject: partman-crypto: preseeding of the dm-crypt passphrase failed
Package: partman-crypto
Version: 36
Severity: normal

-- System Information:
Debian Release: 5.0
  APT prefers stable
  APT policy: (500, 'stable')
Architecture: i386 (i686)
Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash
Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686
Locale: LANG=de_DE@euro, LC_CTYPE=de_DE@euro (charmap=ISO-8859-15)
(the test with english language also failed)

Hello,
i tried to install about 20 laptops full preseeded with crypted
root and swap (and a normal /boot). The installation work but
without accepting my preseeded partman-crypto/passphrase (and
partman-crypto/passphrase-again).
I use 'd-i preseeded partman-crypto/passphrase password CLEAR
TEST PASSWORD' and the same with 'partman-crypto/passphrase-again'.
I see the Values in the 'passwords.dat' when the system is
processing the preseed file but it seems that the 'blockdev-keygen'
script didn't get it.
Is it not possible to preseed this value?
Or how is it possible debug partman-crypto precessing?

The exact image i used for the installation:
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.1/i386/iso-cd/debian-501-i386-netinst.iso
# (14-Apr-2009 00:28 - 154M)

The installation without preseeding partman works correct.

I start the installation with a test preseed file an priority=medium.
My test preseed file (all other values are set intercativ):

 # Disk Partitioning/Boot loader

 # dm-crypt passphrase
 d-i partman-crypto/passphrase password
 A_very_log_and_secret_passphrase!
 d-i partman-crypto/passphrase-again password
 A_very_log_and_secret_passphrase!

When starting the menu entry Partition disks, until setting
the partition for encryption the .../passwords.dat contains:

 ...
 Name: partman-crypto/passphrase
 Template: partman-crypto/passphrase
 Value: A_very_log_and_secret_passphrase!
 Owners: d-i, partman-crypto
 Flags: seen
 Variables:
  ID = partman-crypto/passphrase

 Name: partman-crypto/passphrase-again
 Template: partman-crypto/passphrase-again
 Value: A_very_log_and_secret_passphrase!
 Owners: d-i, partman-crypto
 Flags: seen
 Variables:
  ID = partman-crypto/passphrase-again
 ...

But before preparing the partition the installation asks for the
passphrase.
The .../passwords.dat contains after the partitioning:

 ...
 Name: partman-crypto/passphrase
 Template: partman-crypto/passphrase
 Value:
 Owners: d-i, partman-crypto
 Variables:
  ID = partman-crypto/passphrase
  DEVICE = SCSI1 (0,0,0), partition #2 (sda)

 Name: partman-crypto/passphrase-again
 Template: partman-crypto/passphrase-again
 Value:
 Owners: d-i, partman-crypto
 Variables:
  ID = partman-crypto/passphrase-again
 ...

I inserted a 'set -x' in '/bin/blockdev-keygen' and
'/lib/partman/lib/crypto-base.sh' and append the saved syslog (.gz)
and the lsb-release file to this report.

Many thanks for any help

Gabriel

Severity: wishlist
Tags: d-i patch

The passphrase should be preseedable for unattended installations. This
is possible in the Ubuntu-version of this package since at least the end
of March 2010 (40ubuntu2). The attached patch is an independent
implementation of the same functionality.

Thoughts on security:
The preseeded passphrase should be considered insecure, depending on the
source of the preseed file. But if the administrator ensures that the
user changes the passphrase after the first login, this should still be
secure enough (Maybe put a note about security into the preseed template
file?).

Currently tested on
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/mini.iso
.

which is basically the reversal of what happened between
partman-crypto/75 and partman-crypto/76 (plenty of noise got added).

I originally wrote this:

It would be nice if someone knowing about pdebuild/cowbuilder and
friends could figure out why we get crazy things like this. Since
we're about to freeze, it's quite doubtful that release team members
will enjoy getting such diffs to review for just some .po file
updates.

but looking at base64 and ciphers/loop-AES, that matches deletions in
the git history. Christian, I suspect git clean -ndf / git clean -xdf
would list then remove contents on your side?

In which case, the same probably happened for the other package, since
the introduction of dh-autoreconf meant we would remove old, generated
files.

KiBi.

Hmmm, are you talking about gnome-keyring? It actually hijacks the

still need the pinentry program if you disable gnome-keyright AFAIK.

Couldn't that warning message also include hints to install pinentry-gtk2?

Bug#766646: installation-reports: nothing on screen after systemd-fsck output

2014-10-24 Thread root
Package: installation-reports
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

testing my PXE boot infrastructure with Jessie I did an expert text
installation that
only included SSH server and standard tasks, i.e. no X. Installation went fine
and I
rebooted.
GRUB menu looked ok, then I saw a systemd-fsck success-notice on the screen.
After that my
screen got completely black. My TFT told me about a changed resolution
(1280x1024, which is
its native resolution) but nothing was seen on the screen.
Changing virtual terminals (Ctrl-Alt-F*) didn't change a thing.
Besides seeing nothing I was able to log in as root (and run find / to proove
it). I write
this report via ssh. If you need further information I can log in the machine
at any time to
provide it.

Bug#766570: USB keyboard unresponsive after kernel load, but mouse works (Jessie Beta 2 amd64)

2014-10-24 Thread Daniel F. Smith

Thanks KiBi,

I tried the keyboard (and USB stick) in both the USB2 and USB3 ports.
No difference.

I did find an old blog post[1] describing the issue, and it suggests
adding the following to initrd.img (/etc/initramfs-tools/modules):

  usbcore
  uhci_hcd
  ehci_hcd
  ehci_pci
  usbhid
  hid_generic

I don't currently have a Jessie system to run update-initramfs, but I'll
can copy an initrd onto the USB stick if someone can provide one.

(And you're probably right about syslinux---the BIOS found two
bootloaders: a text one and a graphical one with swooshes; and I didn't
look closely!)

Daniel

 This results in
 http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/armhf/daily/hd-media/dtbs/ which I
don't think is needed since we already have
 http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/armhf/daily/device-tree/ as a common
 place to publish the dtbs.

I think it would be best to put these in a temporary location for the
purposes of including in the hd-media tarball only. Or maybe it is
possible to depend on the output of the existing device-tree flavour,
I've not checked into that possibility.

How about this patch, it seems to do what I meant here.

Ian.
