These will then be used by udisks instead of the default. This is problematic as they miss important options, such as making vfat writable by the user. I think they come from finish.d/fstab_removable_media_entries in partman-target. This is clearly silly and annoying, and likely to contribute to user error when working with a large list of devices (hence tagged as severity: important). #558727 alluded to something *similar*, but Frans suggested that only devices/partitions marked for use as physical RAID devices should be listed. I don't agree - some people prefer to use raw disk devices instead of partitions, and while I personally don't like that, it's a valid choice. A simple fix is to simply not show block device objects that are too small, i.e. less than 1MB in size. Trivial patch included here, and I'll check this into git shortly as soon as I get a bug number for the changelog. :-) I've tested this, and it works nicely... diff --git a/lib/md-base.sh b/lib/md-base.sh index 85de95e..6a52a4b 100644 --- a/lib/md-base.sh +++ b/lib/md-base.sh @@ -42,7 +42,7 @@ md_allowed () { local md=no local fs open_dialog PARTITION_INFO $id - read_line x1 x2 x3 x4 fs x6 x7 + read_line x1 x2 size x4 fs x6 x7 close_dialog if [ "$fs" = free ]; then # parted can't deal with VALID_FLAGS on free space as yet, @@ -68,6 +68,12 @@ md_allowed () { close_dialog fi + # Don't list devices that are too small (less than 1MB), + # they're most likely alignment artifacts + if [ $size -lt 1048576 ]; then + md=no + fi + [ $md = yes ] } -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.8 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable'), (500, 'oldstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: partman-md Source-Version: 74 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of partman-md, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive. Debian Installer Jessie RC 1 release
The Debian Installer team[1] is pleased to announce the first release candidate of the installer for Debian 8 "Jessie". Note: One shouldn't worry about the noticeable delta between the file timestamps (which match when the build happened) and the date of this announce. The delay in announcing this release is entirely my fault, and I'm very sorry the inconvenience. Important changes in this release of the installer == * check-missing-firmware (in hw-detect) was updated to look at the kernel logs to determine which firmwares might be missing. This fixes the longstanding regression in this area compared to the Wheezy release (#725714). * Artwork was updated to use the new "Lines" theme by Juliette Belin. * Due to a change on the linux kernel side, the "---" separator is now used instead of the historical "--" one to separate kernel parameters from userland parameters. This makes it possible for user-params to do its job, and copy e.g. console="..." settings where they're expected in the installed system. * On the i386 architecture, the 486 kernel flavour was renamed to 586 since it was determined that 486 hadn't been supported in a long while. Other changes in this release of the installer == * brltty-udeb: - Update autostart rules with newer devices. - Fix auto-starting at-spi and orca in XFCE and LXDE. * choose-mirror: Update the mirror list (this includes dropping cdn.debian.net). * console-setup: Define missing X keysyms (#762399). * debootstrap: Add support for Debian stretch and Ubuntu vivid. * debian-installer: - Update documentation of required minimum disk size. * efibootmgr: Better handle unreadable boot variables (#768880). * espeakup: - Fix spelling keystrokes and char-by-char echo (#767595). - Fix spelling capital keystrokes (#770753). * grub2: - Add support for forcing an extra copy of grub-efi to the removable media path /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/BOOT$ARCH.EFI (#767037, #773092, #773004). * grub-installer: - Recognise the new ignore_uefi flag from partman-efi. - Add extra support for forcing installation to the EFI removable media path (#767037). - Add support for grub-installer/bootdev=default (#759737). To be used with caution! * libdebian-installer: Recognise the new ignore_uefi flag from partman-efi. * linux: Add ".0" to the kernel version string (#742226, #745984). * netcfg: - Add support for /etc/network/interfaces.d/ (#770078). - Fix missing bounds check on nameserver array iteration, leading to a crash when 4 (or more) nameservers are available (#768218). * partman-crypto: Add support for preseeding passphrases (#656710). To be used with caution! * partman-efi: - Set the "esp" flag for the ESP System Partition (#768788). - Warn the user if we've booted in UEFI mode but we seem to have only non-UEFI existing OS installations - give them the option to switch the installer to non-UEFI mode from this point forwards so they don't break potential dual-boot setup (#763127). - Force umask for /boot/efi in mount options (#770033). - Only display "Force UEFI installation" dialog for x86 (#773311). * partman-md: Fix mdadm.conf generation (#763073). * win32-loader: - Disable "Download Debian GNU/kFreeBSD as stable" as this won't be possible in jessie. - Drop now-redundant desktop selection (#762478). - Avoid dll dependency issues (#772898). Hardware support changes * debian-installer: - Add hd-media support for the armhf platform. - Add scsi-modules to the cdrom flavour on ppc64el to be able to access the CD-ROM drive. - Add grub.cfg to x86 netboot mini.iso for use on EFI systems (#762618). - Add virtio-modules udebs to more arm images. - Provide a PXE bootable grub.efi in the netboot flavour for amd64 and arm64. * linux: - [armhf] Add udeb modules to support video and keyboard for imx6 (#770635). - [i386] Rename 486 flavour to 586 for udebs (#768288). - [armhf] add chipidea usb host driver to usb-modules for i.MX6. - [armhf] Add mtd-modules udeb. - [armhf] Add Exynos5 disk/usb/nic modules to udebs. - [armhf] Backport BananaPi device tree files (#763897). - udeb: Add pata_rdc to pata-modules (#633128). * partman-base: Improve detection of bootloader area, for Freescale and AM33XX systems (770666). * u-boot: - [armhf] Add Bananapi target. - Enable A10-OLinuXino-Lime, A20-OLinuXino-LIME, Cubieboard2, and Cubieboard2_FEL targets (#762383). - Disable efikamx and efikasb targets. - Add nitrogen6q support to u-boot-imx. - Add support for the Arndale board (#763186). - Build FEL variants for all sunxi platforms. Bug#776037: installation-reports: cant install daily snapshot dont detect intel sata raid no devices listen
Control: tag -1 moreinfo Hi, MaxTwister (2015-01-23): > Package: installation-reports > Severity: important > > Dear Maintainer, > > *** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** > > cant install with daily snapshoot debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso dont > detect intel raid > no problems with debian-jessie-DI-b2-amd64-netinst.iso Any chance you could extract the /var/log/syslog file in both the successful and failing cases, and attach them in a reply-to-all mail? There's also a Jessie RC 1 version you could try, below: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/jessie_di_rc1/ (If it also fails, the syslog file would be appreciated as well.) However, bisecting to find out what's happening without the hardware would likely be tedious. It seems there was at least some fun related to the backlight, see this commit: http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=dfb3d47b2369ad752ab9f7438bbf9949524b46ae The build you mentioned should have had this fix though (first appeared in a Debian package with the 3.16.5-1 upload). Preseedable configuration is way lighter than (expert or not) questions, since it's only about an extra key/value to handle in scripts, and there's no need for translations. We have many of those, and we could support an extra one without too much hassle. At first glance, having this question asked in expert mode wouldn't seem too crazy. I'm a bit worried about the timing though; this should have been noticed and worked on way earlier (this change happened in March). > If this is not an issue for d-i, I suppose it could be added solely in > the openssh-server-udeb package. Nice try. :) That udeb is here to provide ssh support during the installation process, it doesn't quite control what's happening in the system getting installed. > > It is already possible to put something like this on the kernel command line > > when booting the installer, which might be useful: > > > > preseed/late_command="in-target sed -i 's/PermitRootLogin > > without-password/PermitRootLogin yes/' /etc/ssh/sshd_config" > > > > If you are producing VM images that are designed to be cloned repeatedly, > > to make those VM images secure and correct, you already need a > > post-processing step to do things like deleting the ssh host key, > > setting a new unique systemd/D-Bus machine ID and so on; it seems > > If we are going down this route, then let us have it documented in the > installation-guide. We can either document that late_command option (right now) or implement something specific to be preseeded, and document it when it's done. By the way: You wrote about the need for translations above, that applies to the installation guide as well. Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I guess there is a conflict > between gnome-core and task-xfce-desktop I'm not sure this makes sense to keep track of this bug report through the debian-installer package; maybe installation-reports… Anyway, can be trivially reproduced in a minimal jessie chroot with: apt-get install task-xfce-desktop task-gnome-desktop and indeed, toying with gnome-core: apt-get install task-xfce-desktop gnome-core → gnome-core : Depends: evince (>= 3.14) but it is not going to be installed Presumably that's some fun related to the gnome/regular vs. gtk-only versions of evince(-gtk). And indeed gnome-core depends on evince (>= 3.14), while task-xfce-desktop recommends evince-gtk. It looks to me that the latter should recommend evince-gtk | evince instead?
