Bug#810408: discover: please switch to libusb 1.0

2016-01-08 Thread Aurelien Jarno
Package: discover
Version: 2.1.2-7
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

discover has a build-depends on libusb-dev. A few years ago upstream
has released a new major version libusb 1.0 with a different API which
aims to fix design deficiencies with USB 2.0 and 3.0 in mind.

The old libusb 0.1 package is not supported upstream anymore and should
be considered deprecated.

If discover supports the new libusb 1.0 library, please consider
switching the build-depends from libusb-dev to libusb-1.0-0-dev. If not
please inform upstream that porting the software to the new API is
recommended.

Thanks,
Aurelien

Source: preseed
Version: 1.68
Severity: wishlist
User: de...@kali.org
Usertags: origin-kali

In Kali, we rely on initrd preseeding to set a bunch of Debconf entries
because it's the only sane way to ensure that we have those during netboot
too.

Unfortunately, it makes it very hard for end-users to change some of
those entries... editing initrd is not the best interface. It would
be very nice if there was a way to override such preseeding with the
(kernel) boot command line.

Right now env-preseed runs before initrd-preseed:
$ ls debian-installer-startup.d/
S30env-preseed S35initrd-preseed S60auto-install

I'm not sure what is the rationale for this order but if we don't want to
swap the order, then I would suggest that we introduce a new syntax that
let us do this operation.

I think inverting the order of both script would make a lot of sense. I
tried to find reasons not to but there is no intermediary script between
S30 and S35 and thus except for the precedence of preseeding, it has no
other impact AFAIK.

Otherwise if not possible I suggest "mirror/hostname!=http://my.mirror; as
alternative syntax, somewhat mirroring the already existing ?= syntax
(with the exclamation mark conveying the notion of "forcing") but I'm
happy with any other syntax that you might prefer.

Phil & Cyril, please share your opinions/preference as I'll probably try
to implement this soonish.

I track this wishlist on the Kali side too:
https://bugs.kali.org/view.php?id=2143

And it's prompted by the fact that even though we set a mirror in the
initrd, it would be nice if users could pick other mirrors via the command
line. Example case where someone was bitten by this:

The recent bug report against discover reminded of this.

Here it is.
If somebody will report valid uses for devices.tar.gz then the old code
can be enabled again easily.

Bug#806852: Lets discuss sulogin --force implementation in one place...

2016-01-08 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Control: reassign 806852 systemd
Control: forcemerge 802211 806852

Hello.

I'm reassigning and merging the two bugs discussing different solutions
to the same problem. Given there's no consensus on which way to
implement this, most discussions have happened on/with systemd side
(unfortunately on IRC) and that bug report is oldest lets continue this
discussion there. If we come to the conclusion we want d-i to be
involved, we should simply reassign (or whatever is appropriate)
then

Andreas Henriksson

Yes, so I think we ought to raise the maximum size of /usr by 50-100%.
Maybe even for a jessie point release.

This issue may be resolved subsequently -- although probably using a
procedure that occurs *earlier* than 'the hooks' :)

Using the same Debian Sid Linux kernel source, I generated another
Reiser4-enabled kernel 'the Debian Way' -- but with a custom changelog
that clearly shows has Reiser4 super power :D
https://metztli.it/readOnlyEphemeral/linux-image-4.3.0-1+reiser4.0.1-amd64_4.3.3-5+reiser4.0.2_amd64.tar

Once installed into a Debian distro, a uname -a yields:

Linux [host] 4.3.0-1+reiser4.0.1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian
4.3.3-5+reiser4.0.1 (2016-01-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hence *hold* is not necessary for said kernel.

Well renaming Debian GNU Parted can wait -- as it is optional for the
user *even* after Debian is installed; i.e., I have embedded the
Reiser4-enabled lib/parted[2] UDEB into previoulsy referenced
Debian-Installer (d-i) netboot ISO:
http://metztli.it/readOnlyEphemeral/metztli_it-reiser4_d-i.iso

Thanks for your suggestions, Dimas.

Yes, it drags X11 stuff through imagemagick, we'll probably demote that.

iceweasel and icedove take each almost 100MiB...
